Biocontrol of the Major Plant Pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum in Irrigation Water and Host Plants by Novel Waterborne Lytic Bacteriophages
2019
Three new lytic bacteriophages were found to effectively control the pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, a quarantine bacterium in many countries, and causative agent of bacterial wilt, one of the most important vascular plant diseases. Bacterial wilt management has been carried out with fluctuating effects, suggesting the need to find alternative treatments. In this work, three lytic phages were isolated from environmental water from geographically distant regions in Spain. They proved to specifically infect a collection of R. solanacearum strains, and some of the closely related pathogenic species Ralstonia pseudosolanacearum, without affecting non-target environmental bacteria, and were abl…
Genomic Insights Into Five Strains of Lactobacillus plantarum With Biotechnological Potential Isolated From chicha, a Traditional Maize-Based Ferment…
2019
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are indigenous microorganisms that have been involved in food fermentations throughout history to preserve food and also to give special characteristics to them. The traditional fermented foods that are still being elaborated in indigenous populations around the world are a potential source of LAB with important biotechnological properties and/or beneficial to health. In a previous work, LAB biodiversity associated with chicha, a traditional maize-based fermented beverage from Northwestern Argentina, was studied, both by culture dependent and independent methods. From that study, 392 isolates were recovered, mostly members of Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc. Biotech…
Riska faktori miopijas attīstībai
2019
Ievads.
Mitochondrial inheritance and fermentative : oxidative balance in hybrids between Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Saccharomyces uvarum.
2008
Breeding between Saccharomyces species is a useful tool for obtaining improved wine yeast strains, combining fermentative features of parental species. In this work, 25 artificial Saccharomyces cerevisiae × Saccharomyces uvarum hybrids were constructed by spore conjugation. A multi-locus PCR‐restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) analysis, targeting six nuclear gene markers and the ribosomal region including the 5.8S rRNA gene and the two internal transcribed spacers, showed that the hybrid genome is the result of two chromosome sets, one coming from S. cerevisiae and the other from S. uvarum. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) typing showed uniparental inheritance in all hybrids. Furth…
Application of molecular topology to the prediction of the antimalarial activity of a group of uracil-based acyclic and deoxyuridine compounds.
2008
A topological-mathematical model has been arranged to search for new derivatives of deoxyuridine and related compounds acting as antimalarials against Plasmodium falciparum. By using linear discriminant and multilinear regression analysis a model with two functions was capable to predict adequately the IC(50) for each compound of the training and test series. After carrying out a virtual screening based upon such a model, new structures potentially active against P. falciparum are proposed.
In vitro and in silico studies of polycondensed diazine systems as anti-parasitic agents
2012
Abstract Parasitic diseases caused by protozoarian agents are still relevant today more than ever. Recently, we synthesized several polycondensed diazine derivatives by means 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. A broad selection of these compounds were submitted to in vitro biological screening against Plasmodium falciparum , Leishmania infantum , Trypanosoma brucei , and Trypanosoma cruzi , resulting active at micromolar level. Induced Fit Docking/MM-GBSA studies were performed giving interesting indications about the probable mechanism of action of the most active compounds
Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-rhodium and iridium complexes containing (N^N and N^O) bound chloroquine analogue ligands: synthesis, characterization an…
2016
The synthesis and characterization of twenty new pentamethylcyclopentadienyl-rhodium and iridium complexes containing N^N and N^O-chelating chloroquine analogue ligands are described. The in vitro antimalarial activity of the new ligands as well as the complexes was evaluated against the chloroquine sensitive (CQS) NF54 and the chloroquine resistant (CQR) Dd2 strains of Plasmodium falciparum. The antimalarial activity was found to be good to moderate; although all complexes are less active than artesunate, some of the ligands and complexes showed better activity than chloroquine (CQ). In particular, rhodium complexes were found to be considerably more active than iridium complexes against t…
Inhibition of Eimeria tenella CDK-related kinase 2: From target identification to lead compounds.
2010
Apicomplexan parasites encompass several human- and animal-pathogenic protozoans such as Plasmodium falciparum, Toxoplasma gondii, and Eimeria tenella. E. tenella causes coccidiosis, a disease that afflicts chickens, leading to tremendous economic losses to the global poultry industry. The considerable increase in drug resistance makes it necessary to develop new therapeutic strategies against this parasite. Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) are key molecules in cell-cycle regulation and are therefore prominent target proteins in parasitic diseases. Bioinformatics analysis revealed four potential CDK-like proteins, of which one—E. tenella CDK-related kinase 2 (EtCRK2)—has already been charact…
Lactobacillus uvarum sp. nov. - A new lactic acid bacterium isolated from Spanish Bobal grape must
2008
Five strains isolated from grape musts in Spain in 1997, have been characterized by several molecular techniques, and three of them have been identified as pertaining to a new species. All strains are Gram-positive rods, aerotolerant and homofermentative bacteria that do not exhibit catalase activity. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences placed these strains within the genus Lactobacillus, closely related to Lactobacillus mali. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments confirmed that strain 71 belongs to the lately described species L. satsumensis, strain 88 belongs to L. mali and the other three isolates have an independent status at species level. Restriction analysis of the amp…
