Theoretical Analysis of Factors Influencing Recovery of Ventilation Distributions from Inert Gas Washout Data
1990
For the quantitative analysis of intraregional ventilation inhomogeneities, one classically applies the inert gas washout method [7,24] in which an inert gas of negligible solubility in blood and tissue is washed into the lungs. After washin is complete, the inspiratory inert gas fraction is set to a smaller value and the time course of the mixed endexpiratory inert gas fraction during the subsequent inert gas washout is recorded. The determinants of this time course are: The endexpiratory alveolar volume at the instant of change in inspiratory inert gas fraction, the anatomical dead space, the gas exchange ratio, the respiratory frequency, the in- and expiratory tidal volumes, and the inho…

Laser Cladding of TiC for Better Titanium Components
2011
Pure commercial titanium is widely used because of its high corrosion resistance and lower cost compared with other titanium alloys, in particular when there is no high wear requirements. Nevertheless, the wear resistance is poor and surface damage usually occurs in areas under contact loadings. Laser cladding is a suitable technique for manufacturing precise and defect free coatings of a dissimilar material with higher wear and corrosion resistance. In this work a good understanding of laser metal deposition mechanisms allowed to obtain defect free coatings of Ti6Al4V and TiC metal matrix composite (MMC) using a flash lamp pumped Nd:YAG laser of 1 kW. A complete investigation of the proces…
MediaDASH Tool: Plataforma Web para la Codificación, Difusión y Recepción de Videos DASH
2017
Ethnographic context and spatial coherence of climate indicators for farming communities : a multi-regional comparative assessment
2015
Accurate seasonal predictions of rainfall may reduce climatic risks that farmers are usually faced with across the tropical and subtropical zones. However, although regional-scale seasonal amounts have regularly been forecasted since 1997/98, the practical use of these seasonal predictions is still limited by myriad factors. This paper synthesizes the main resultsof a multi-disciplinary ethnographic and climatic project (PICREVAT). Its main objective was to seek the climatic information ? beyond the seasonal amounts ? critical for crops, both as an actual constraint to crop yields and as identified by the current and past practices and perceptions of farmers. A second goal was to confront t…
On the Marketization of the Academic Review Process
2014
Pressure to change the academic reviewing system is growing. We discuss two groups of proposals for introducing market mechanisms. First, Prufer and Zetland (2009), based on Havrilesky (1975), create an auction system: manuscripts are submitted and auctioned to editors in "academic dollars", while citations earn credits for authors. Second, Fox and Petchey (2010), after Riyanto and Yetkiner (2002), create a "PubCred" currency, in which referees are paid and can then pay for their own submissions, while Aarssen (2008) and White and Ernest (2010) introduce hard cash remuneration for reviewers. These systems would adversely affect editors, referees, and authors alike, and would soon prove econ…
Achieving Fair Bandwidth Distribution in WiFi Networks: A Game Theoretical Approach
2011
International audience; Achieving fair bandwidth distribution among uplink and downlink ows in IEEE 802.11 infrastructure networks is a complex issue, due to the well-known features of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) which regulates the access to the shared medium. Indeed, the dynamic adaptation of the contention windows causes phenomena of short-term unfairness, while the use of homogeneous contention parameters among the contending nodes makes the aggregated downlink bandwidth equal to the uplink bandwidth of a single node. We propose a dynamic tuning of the contention parameters used by the nodes, based on simple network monitoring functionalities and rational strategies. Spe…
