Analysis of soliton dynamics and noise induced effects on the superconductive lifetime in long Josephson junctions.

2013

The influence of various noise sources on the transient dynamics of long Josephson junctions (LJJ) is investigated in the presence of an oscillating bias current signal and a noise source with Gaussian or non-Gaussian (i.e. Cauchy-Lorentz or Lévy-Smirnov) probability distributions. These systems are computationally analyzed integrating the perturbed Sine-Gordon equation describing the phase evolution. We found evidence of noise induced effects on trends of the mean escape time (MET) from the superconductive metastable state, varying different system parameters, as the bias frequency, noise intensity and junction length. In particular, we find resonant activation (RA) and noise enhanced stab…

Transient dynamics in driven long Josephson junctions.

2013

The switching time from the superconductive metastable state of a long Josephson junction (LJJ)[1] is computationally analyzed in the framework of the perturbed sine-Gordon equation. The model includes an external bias current term and a stochastic noise source, i.e. a Lévy noise term. The effects of this noise on the mean escape time (MET) from the superconductive state are analyzed. The investigation is performed by considering a wide range of values of system parameters and different noise statistics: Gaussian, Cauchy-Lorentz and Lévy-Smirnov[2]. We found evidence of well known noise induced phenomena on the MET behavior, that is the noise enhanced stability (NES) and resonant activation…

SURFACE AND MECHANISTIC PROPERTIES OF RECYCLED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

2019

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Problem Often, when the characteristics of a bituminous mixture are analised, there are major differences between in-lab and in-situ results. This is due to the fact that the procedures and techniques implemented during the design phase (in lab) may be different from those used on site. Then, is very important to be able to predict the main properties of a mixture particularly when innovative materials are used. For example, when crumb rubber is used, phisical and volumetric properties of mixes may change over time, in particular due to the swelling phenomenon that it alters different properties of the mixture (e.g., viscosity). This study aims to investigate the main aspe…

Exploring Countercyclical Fiscal Policy in Local Government: Moving Beyond an Aggregated Approach

2014

There is a renewed interest in the fiscal health of local governments in the United States, which is being driven in part by academic research, professional organizations, and the economy. This renewed interest also includes how local governments use their cash reserves for countercyclical fiscal policy, which is a stream of research that has received minimal attention in the literature. We respond in this article by exploring how 97 North Carolina counties used their cash reserves from 2005 to 2012, which includes the great recession of 2008 and 2009. Our findings provide some evidence of countercyclical fiscal policy in local government when exploring the use of cash reserves from an aggr…

Microwave muffle furnace assisted decomposition of vegetable samples for flame atomic spectrometric determination of Ca, Mg, K, Fe, Mn and Zn

1992

Calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese and zinc can be accurately determined in vegetable samples by flame atomic absorption and flame emission spectrophotometry after a previous dry ashing of the sample in a microwave muffle furnace. This treatment is carried out in 45 min using a new accessory developed by us to obtain high temperatures on a domestic microwave oven. Sample ashes, obtained in the muffle, are diluted with nitric acid and the obtained slurry is introduced directly into an air-C2H2 flame for the analysis of Fe, Mn, and Zn, or injected into a double-channel FIA manifold to determine Ca, Mg and K. The obtained results agree with those certified and also with those obtai…

Kawasaki disease triggered by EBV virus in a child with Familial Mediterranean Fever

2019

Abstract Background Familial Mediterranean Fever is a monogenic autoinflammatory disease, secondary to mutation of MEFV gene, and typically expressed with recurrent attacks of fever, serositis, rash, aphthous changes in lips and/or oral mucosa. Kawasaki Disease, an acute systemic vasculitis with persistent fever (5 or more days), rash, stomatitis, conjunctivitis, lymphadenopathy, changes in extremities, is currently considered a multifactorial autoinflammatory disease. An infection, as Epstein Barr virus, can be the trigger of Kawasaki Disease. Case presentation We describe the clinical case of a 3-year-old boy with Kawasaki disease. Successfully treated with intravenous immune globulin, ac…

Adult-onset Still's disease: an Italian multicentre retrospective observational study of manifestations and treatments in 245 patients

2016

Adult-onset Still’s disease (AOSD) is a systemic inflammatory condition of unknown aetiology characterized by typical episodes of spiking fever, evanescent rash, arthralgia, leukocytosis and hyperferritinemia. Given the lack of data in Italian series, we promote a multicentric data collection to characterize the clinical phenotype of Italian patients with AOSD. Data from 245 subjects diagnosed with AOSD were collected by 15 centres between March and May 2013. The diagnosis was made following Yamaguchi’s criteria. Data regarding clinical manifestations, laboratory features, disease course and treatments were reported and compared with those presented in other published series of different et…

Effect of Road Safety Education on Road Risky Behaviors of Spanish Children and Adolescents: Findings from a National Study

2018

Background: Road Safety Education (RSE) is widely known as a reliable determinant of the future results for what concerns health and welfare and as an undisputable factor which contributes to the social behavior of individuals and to their mid- and long-term road safety outcomes. However, its development has been relatively scarce in most countries, a fact which has contributed to letting matters as delicate as traffic crashes, largely explained by road misbehaviors, continue to be a prevalent problem, thus affecting the health of the community. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between demographic and RSE-related variables and the self-reported road risky be…

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in adults 2021: A clinical practice guideline of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF), the Ita…

2021

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common and emerging liver disease in adults, paralleling the epidemic of obesity and diabetes, and leading to worrisome events (hepatocellular carcinoma and end-stage liver disease). In the last years, mounting evidence added insights about epidemiology, natural history, diagnosis and lifestyle-based or drug treatment of NAFLD. In this rapidly evolving scenario, members of the Associazione Italiana per lo Studio del Fegato (AISF), the Società Italiana di Diabetologia (SID) and the Società Italiana dell'Obesità (SIO) reviewed current knowledge on NAFLD. The quality of the published evidence is graded, and practical recommendations are made follow…
