Seismogenic rotational slumps and translational glides in pelagic deep-water carbonates. Upper Tithonian-Berriasian of Southern Tethyan margin (W Sic…
2017
Abstract Soft-sediment deformation structures (SSDSs), which reflect sediment mobilization processes, are helpful to identify punctual events of paleoenvironmental stresses. In the upper Tithonian-Berriasian calpionellid pelagic limestone of the Lattimusa Fm. outcropping in the Barracu section (W Sicily), paleoenvironmental restoration reveals the occurrence of a deep-water flat basin, characterised by undeformed planar bedding, laterally passing to a gentle slope where the deformed horizons alternate with undeformed beds. Here, two types of gravity slides have been differentiated on the basis of different kinds of SSDSs, brittle deformation, involved lithofacies, geometry and morphology. T…

Music in mood regulation in adolescence : an initial exploration of the Singapore context
2016
The use of music in mood regulation for adolescents is an important topic in the field of Music and Psychology. However, studies on this specific but important topic have been few and limited. The small number of studies that have been done have used mainly participants from Finland and Europe. The use of music in mood regulation for adolescents in other cultures like in Asia has not been explored. There also appears to be a lack of focus and understanding in the country of Singapore regarding the use of music for more therapeutic purposes like for mood regulation. This study seeks to be a pilot in presenting and understanding the use of music in mood regulation by adolescents in Singapore,…

Monopolizing Asia: The politics of a metaphor
1997
Abstract The metaphor of Asia is frequently used nowadays as a concept for regional identity, but it is very problematical because geographic Asia contains such a large piece of humanity in all cultural, political and economic forms. Historically Asia also has negative connotations, and at times other regional concepts have been preferred over it. Pan‐Asianism, Greater East Asia, Asian‐African cooperation, Asian Socialism, Southeast Asia, Western Pacific, Asia Pacific, and East Asia are some of the regionalist permutations of the metaphor of Asia during this century, but thus far no strong institutional structures have emerged to fill the concepts with lasting and effective political power.
Foreign Direct Investment, Terms of Trade, and Quality Upgrading: What Is So Special about South Asia?
2016
The existing literature has highlighted the positive effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on export upgrading and associated terms of trade in developing economies. However, the FDI effect has been found to be negative in South Asia. In this paper, we elaborate on the South Asia-specific effect by emphasizing the role of human capital in the positive link between FDI and terms of trade. We argue that education levels in South Asia have lagged behind those in East Asia and other developing regions. This has resulted in a world market integration strategy in South Asia that specializes in less skills-intensive products and generates associated FDI flows. We demonstrate these patterns fo…
Pricing of Asian exchange rate options under stochastic interest rates as a sum of options
2002
The aim of the paper is to develop pricing formulas for long term European type Asian options written on the exchange rate in a two currency economy. The exchange rate as well as the foreign and domestic zero coupon bond prices are assumed to follow geometric Brownian motions. The emphasis is devoted to the discretely sampled Asian option. It is shown how the value of this option can be approximated as the sum of Black-Scholes options. The formula is obtained under the extension of results developed by Rogers and Shi (1995) and Jamshidian (1991). In addition bounds for the pricing error are determined. Comparing with Monte Carlo simulation the pricing is found to be very precise.
European Option Pricing and Hedging with Both Fixed and Proportional Transaction Costs
2003
Abstract In this paper we provide a systematic treatment of the utility based option pricing and hedging approach in markets with both fixed and proportional transaction costs: we extend the framework developed by Davis et al. (SIAM J. Control Optim., 31 (1993) 470) and formulate the option pricing and hedging problem. We propose and implement a numerical procedure for computing option prices and corresponding optimal hedging strategies. We present a careful analysis of the optimal hedging strategy and elaborate on important differences between the exact hedging strategy and the asymptotic hedging strategy of Whalley and Wilmott (RISK 7 (1994) 82). We provide a simulation analysis in order …
American Option Pricing and Exercising with Transaction Costs
2005
In this paper we examine the problem of finding the reservation option prices and corresponding exercise policies of American options in a market with proportional transaction costs using the utility based approach proposed by Davis and Zariphopoulou (1995). We present a model where the option holder has a constant absolute risk aversion. We discuss the numerical algorithm and propose a new characterization of the option holder's value function. We suggest original discretization schemes for computing reservation prices and exercise policies of American options. The discretization schemes are implemented for the cases of American put and call options. We present the study of the optimal tra…
Cytotoxicity and inhibition of P-glycoprotein by selected medicinal plants from Thailand.
2014
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Thai medicine has a long tradition of tonifying medicinal plants. In the present investigation, we studied the flower extracts of Jasminum sambac, Mammea siamensis, Mesua ferrea, Michelia alba, Mimusops elengi, and Nelumbo nucifera and speculated that these plants might influence metabolism and substance flow in the body. Materials and methods Isolation of porcine brain capillary endothelial cells (PBCECs) as well as multidrug-resistance CEM/ADR5000 leukemia cells, MDA-M;B-231 breast cancer, U-251 brain tumor, and HCT-116 colon cancer cells were used. The calcein-acetoxymethylester (AM) assay was used to measure inhibition of P-glycoprotein transport.…
