Cystic mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung: a case report.

2011

Abstract Mucinous cystic tumors of the lung are uncommon, the preoperative pathologic diagnosis is difficult and their biological behavior is still controversial. We report the case of a patient with a clinically benign cystic lesion that post-operatively showed to be consistent with an invasive adenocarcinoma arising in a mucinous cystadenoma of the lung, We underline the difficulty of the clinical pre-operative diagnosis of this cystic neoplasia radiologically mimicking a hydatid cyst, and we report the negative TTF1 immunostaining potentially misleading in the differential diagnosis with metastatic mucinous carcinomas. Finallly, we evidence the presence of a pre-existing mucinous benign …

GM-CSF expression by human lung microvascular endothelial cells: in vitro and in vivo findings.

2002

Recently, many findings indicate that granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) plays an important role in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic lung diseases. In the present paper, the production of this cytokine in human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (HPMEC) is investigated. In an in vitro study, quiescent HPMEC did not express GM-CSF, either at the transcriptional or at the protein level. After activation for 4 h with tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α (30/300 U/ml), lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 0.1/1 μg/ml), or interleukin (IL)-1β (100 U/ml), a significant release of GM-CSF was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, with a time-dependent increase over 72 h. IL…

Small airways function and molecular markers in exhaled air in mild asthma.

2005

Background: Several studies suggest that the periphery of the lung is the major site of inflammation in asthma. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) and 8-isoprostane have been proposed as biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. We therefore hypothesised that small airway dysfunction in asthma is of inflammatory origin that can be detected by molecular markers in exhaled air. To test this hypothesis, we examined the relationship of FeNO and 8-isoprostane in exhaled air with small airways function as assessed by the single breath nitrogen test. Methods: Sixteen patients (14 women) with mild atopic asthma (forced expiratory volume in 1 second >80% predicted) of mean (SD) age 23.0 (…

Becton Dickinson Directigen EZ Flu A+B assay in the diagnosis of pandemic influenza A H1N1 2009 virus infection in adult patients

2011

To the editor: The recent emergence and spread of the pandemic influenza A H1N1 2009 virus demands the evaluation of rapid antigen assays for their ability to detect this novel subtype of influenza A virus. Data on the ability of BD Directigen EZ Flu A+B immunochromatographic (IC) assay (Beckton Dickinson and Company, Sparks, MD, USA) to detect the pandemic influenza A virus strain in fresh clinical samples have been recently published. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 In these studies, the majority of specimens were collected from pediatric patients, and the sensitivities reported ranged from 46·8% to 76·6%. As viral shedding in the upper respiratory tract during influenza virus infection is of greater m…

Decreased glutathione and low catalase activity contribute to oxidative stress in children with α-1 antitrypsin deficiency: Table 1

2014

Background Recent investigations in animal models have revealed oxidative stress and oxidative damage in the pathogenesis of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). However, no data are available on the oxidative stress status and antioxidant enzyme activity in these patients. This study was aimed to analyse the oxidative stress profile and enzymatic antioxidant defence mechanisms in children with AATD. Methods Oxidative stress parameters and the activity of the main antioxidant enzymes were prospectively measured in serum of fifty-one children diagnosed with AATD and thirty-eight control individuals. Results Oxidative stress was increased in the serum of children with intermediate- (MZ; SZ)…

Induction of erod activity in HEPA-1 mouse hepatoma cells and estrogenicity in mcf-7 human breast cancer cells by extracts of pulp mill effluents, sl…

1998

Extracts of effluents and sludges from the primary and secondary clarifiers of an activated sludge treatment plant at a Finnish bleached kraft pulp and paper mill were analyzed in two cell bioassays. Total dioxin-like activities were determined by measuring the induction of ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in Hepa-1 mouse hepatoma cells. Estrogenicity was studied by measuring luciferase activity in MCF-7 ERE-luc, which are MCF-7 human breast cancer cells stably transfected with an estrogen-responsive element linked to a luciferase promoter. Sediments collected near the pulp mill and from other sites in Lake Saimaa as well as fillets of whitefish exposed to effluents were examine…

Novel ruthenium methylcyclopentadienyl complex bearing a bipyridine perfluorinated ligand shows strong activity towards colorectal cancer cells

2017

Three new compounds have been synthesized and completely characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. The new bipyridine-perfluorinated ligand L1 and the new organometallic complex [Ru(η 5 -MeCp)(PPh 3 ) 2 Cl] (Ru1) crystalize in the centrosymmetric triclinic space group P1¯. Analysis of the phenotypic effects induced by both organometallic complexes Ru1 and [Ru(η 5 -MeCp)(PPh 3 )(L1)][CF 3 SO 3 ] (Ru2), on human colorectal cancer cells (SW480 and RKO) survival, showed that Ru2 has a potent anti-proliferative activity, 4–6 times higher than cisplatin, and induce apoptosis in these cells. Data obtained in a noncancerous cell line derived from normal colon epithelial cells (NCM46…

Synthesis, antiproliferative activity, and mechanism of action of a series of 2-{[2E]-3-phenylprop-2-enoylamino}benzamides

2011

Several new 2-{[(2E)-3-phenylprop-2-enoyl]amino}benzamides 12a–s and 17t–v were synthesized by stirring in pyridine the (E)-3-(2-R1-3-R2-4-R3-phenyl)acrylic acid chlorides 11c–k and 11t–v with the appropriate anthranilamide derivatives 10a–c or the 5-iodoanthranilic acid 13. Some of the synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative activity against the full NCI tumor cell line panel derived from nine clinically isolated cancer types (leukemia, non-small cell lung, colon, CNS, melanoma, ovarian, renal, prostate and breast). COMPARE analysis, effects on tubulin polymerization in cells and with purified tubulin, and effects on cell cycle distribution for 17t, the mo…

Amyloid-Beta Induces Different Expression Pattern of Tissue Transglutaminase and Its Isoforms on Olfactory Ensheathing Cells: Modulatory Effect of In…

2021

Abstract Alzhèimer Disease (AD) is characterized by protein aggregates in the brain, including amyloid-beta (Aβ), a substrate for tissue transglutaminase (TG2). We assessed the effect of full native peptide of Aβ (1–42), the fragments (25–35 and 35–25) on TG2 expression and its isoforms (Long and Short) on mouse Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OECs). The levels of cytoskeletal proteins, Vimentin and Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein, were also studied. The effect of the pre-treatment with Indicaxanthin on cell viability, total Reactive Oxygen Species, superoxide anion and apoptotic pathway activation was assessed. Since Nestin is co-expressed in pluripotent stem cells with cyclin D1, their levels …

An unexpected Dimroth rearrangement leading to annelated thieno[3,2-d][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines with potent antitumor activity.

2013

An unusual Dimroth rearrangement occurring in the reaction leading to annelated thieno[2,3-e][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine core allowed the isolation of the linear isomer thieno[3,2-d][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine. By decorating the linear isomer with the same chains that improved the biological activity of the angular isomers, new annelated thieno[3,2-d][1,2,3]triazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines were designed and synthesized. They were selected by the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) for the anticancer screening against a panel of 60 human tumor cell lines. The biological results showed that the new derivatives exhibited strong antiproliferative …
