Detection of IgM antibodies specific for measles virus by capture and indirect enzyme immunoassays.

1995

Summary During a measles outbreak, 112 serum specimens from 88 hospitalized patients were received in our laboratory for investigation of a morbilliform rash. These specimens (88 acute- and 24 convalescent-phase) were tested for the presence of measles-specific IgM antibodies by a capture EIA (enzyme immunoassay) using peroxidase-conjugated measles virus antigens and by an indirect EIA. Commercially available indirect EIA kits for measles-specific IgM antibodies were also used and compared with our homemade EIAs. Specificity studies included a collection of serum specimens containing rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibodies or IgM antibodies specific to other viruses, and sera from blood d…

Modifications in the production of cytokines and growth factors in drainage fluids following mesh implantation after incisional hernia repair

2005

Abstract Background The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the production of some cytokines (interleukins [ILs]-6, -10, -1, and -1ra), vascular endothelial growth factor, and beta-fibroblast growth factor after polypropylene mesh implantation. Methods Twenty female patients were divided into 2 groups. In 1 group, hernia repair was performed with conventional sutures (CR), whereas in the other group polypropylene mesh (MR) was used. Growth factors and cytokines production was analyzed in wound drain fluids based on the amount produced during 24 hours. Results IL-1 increased substantially in MR patients on postoperative days 1 and 2. IL1-ra and IL-10 production was always significan…

Recombinant hirudin as a periprocedural antithrombotic in coronary angioplasty for unstable angina pectoris

1996

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty is often complicated by thrombotic abrupt vessel closure in patients with unstable angina pectoris. The present multicentre trial was performed to determine the feasibility of two-dose regimens of recombinant hirudin (r-hirudin) compared to standard heparin in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty for unstable angina, and to investigate the effects of the different treatment regimen on markers of coagulation activation. At five participating centres, 61 patients were randomly enrolled in one of two sequential groups of r-hirudin (group 1: 0.3 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.12 mg.kg-1.h-1 i.v. infusion; 21 patients; group 2: 0.5 mg.kg-1 i.v. bolus, 0.…

Activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes of skeletal muscle in neuromuscular diseases.

1986

The activities of some antioxidative and hexose monophosphate shunt enzymes, as well as of 2 hydrolases were studied in skeletal muscle biopsy specimens taken from 39 patients with neuromuscular diseases and from 15 controls. The activity of Se-dependent glutathione peroxidase was higher in patients with congenital myotonia, whereas in the other diagnostic groups this enzyme activity was the same as in the controls. The Se-independent and total glutathione peroxidase activity of patients in the various diagnostic groups did not differ from the controls. Moreover, no difference were observed in catalase activity between the patient groups and the controls. The activities of the rate limiting…

The ratio of androstenedione: 11β-hydroxyandrostenedione is an important marker of adrenal androgen excess in women

1992

To determine if the ratio of serum androstenedione (A):11 beta-hydroxyandrostenedione (OHA) would be helpful in differentiating adrenal from ovarian hyperandrogenism.Prospective study of outpatients being evaluated for hyperandrogenism.Normal women (n = 27), those with hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation (n = 25), and 7 with adult onset of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) because of 21-hydroxylase deficiency.Fasting serum between 8:00 A.M. and 9:00 A.M. Patients with hyperandrogenic chronic anovulation and CAH received dexamethasone (DEX) 2 mg for 7 days.Serum testosterone (T), unbound T, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), A, and 11 beta-OHA by radioimmunoassay.Serum 11 beta-OHA an…

Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 levels in patients with psoriasis.

1993

A newly developed ELISA was used to detect and quantify the presence of a soluble form of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) in the circulation of healthy individuals compared with patients with psoriasis vulgaris. Seventeen psoriatic patients were studied. The extent of skin lesions was rated by the psoriasis area and severity index (PASI). Seventeen age- and sex-matched healthy individuals served as controls. Serum levels were measured by an ELISA technique utilizing an anti-ICAM-1 murine monoclonal antibody bound to the solid phase, and a second, peroxidase-conjugated monoclonal antibody reacting with sICAM-1. Serum levels in controls were 358.8 +/- 87.9 ng/ml sICAM-1, and 480.5…

Evaluation of the Stratus® CS Acute Care™ D-dimer assay (DDMR) using the Stratus® CS STAT Fluorometric Analyzer: A prospective multisite study for ex…

2012

Abstract Background D-dimer testing is an integral part of the diagnostic algorithm in excluding patients with venous thromboembolism. In this study, we prospectively evaluated the Stratus DDMR D-dimer test in patients suspected of pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Methods Patients suspected of venous thromboembolism were prospectively enrolled at four different clinical sites, with sodium citrate and lithium heparin plasma was tested using the DDMR D-dimer test on the Stratus CS analyzer. Results 1,012 patients were enrolled for analysis, with 85/603 (14.1%) patients with PE and 80/443 (18.1%) with DVT, and four of the patients (0.4%) with PE and DVT. For the samples …

Development and testing of new screening method for keratan sulfate in mucopolysaccharidosis IVA.

2004

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA), a progressive lysosomal storage disease, causes skeletal dysplasia through excessive storage of keratan sulfate (KS). We developed an ELISA-sandwich assay that used a MAb specific to KS. Forty-five blood and 59 urine specimens from MPS IVA patients (ages 1–65 y) were analyzed to determine whether KS concentration is a suitable marker for early diagnosis and longitudinal assessment of disease severity. Blood specimens were obtained from patients categorized as phenotypically severe (n = 36) and milder (n = 9). Urine specimens were also analyzed from patients categorized as severe (n = 56) and milder (n = 12), respectively. Blood KS levels (101–1525 ng/mL)…

Neuromuscular adaptations and serum hormones in women during short-term intensive strength training

1992

The effects were investigated in ten women of intensive heavy resistance strength training lasting for 3 weeks on electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and voluntary force production characteristics of leg extensor muscles. Blood samples for the determinations of serum hormones were taken from five of the subjects. Significant increases occurred in the higher force portions of the isometric force-time curve with an increase of 9.7 (SD 8.4)% (P less than 0.01) in maximal peak force. An increase of 15.8 (SD 20.9)% (P less than 0.05) took place also in the maximal neural activation (integrated EMG) of the trained muscles, while an enlargement of 4.6 (SD 7.4)% (P l…
