To compare cognitive processes adopted by students with different cultures in solving mathematical problems we have to focus on the Math epistemology through a cultural analysis concerning the fundamental elements of the students different cultural traditions and the philosophical, logic and linguistic bases subtended to the mathematical thought and its historical evolution. The paper describes this theoretical framework, emphasizing a possible comparison between different cognitive styles and mathematical problem solutions in the context of arithmetic and Algebraic thought of Italian and Chinese students in multicultural classes.

This paper aims at reporting the ongoing process of naturalization of Melia azedarach L. in Sicily. In fact, over half a century after the first detection of spontaneous self-sown seedlings, an abrupt increase of naturalization cases has been recorded by the authors during the last twenty years. More in detail, M. azedarach successfully colonized many suburban lowland areas along the coasts of the island which are characterised by thermo-Mediterranean bioclimate. Acacia cyclops A. Cunn. ex G. Don (Leguminosae) in Italy: first cases of naturalization

The first two cases of naturalization of Acacia cyclops are reported for Italy. Young trees were observed growing in the wild some 15 years ago on Linosa (Pelagie Islands, Strait of Sicily). A decade later, this alien plant should no longer be considered as a casual, since a very intensive process of self-sown regeneration has been observed in some plantations on Lampedusa, the major island of the same Archipelago. The available literature suggests the need for careful monitoring of the ongoing invasion process, as A. cyclops has already shown a very invasive behaviour elsewhere within Mediterranean-type biomes due to its ability to withstand high environmental stresses. In genetic toxicology, risk assessment has traditionally adopted linear dose-responses for any compound that causes genotoxic effects. Increasing evidence of non-linear dose-responses, however, suggests potential cellular tolerance to low levels of many genotoxicants with diverse modes of action. Such putative non-linear dose-responses need to be substantiated by strong mechanistic data that identifies the mechanisms responsible for the tolerance to low doses. This article presents an alternative way of analyzing the van Hiele level of students’ geometrical reasoning. We evaluate the students’ answers, taking into account the van Hiele level they reflect and their mathematical accuracy. This gives us a description of how accomplished the students are in applying the procedures associated with each of the van Hiele levels and allows us to determine the students’ degree of acquisition of the van Hiele levels. Thermally poled niobium borophosphate glasses in the system 0.55(0.95-y) NaPO{sub 3}+y/2 Ba(PO{sub 3}){sub 2}+0.05Na{sub 2}B{sub 4}O{sub 7})+0.45Nb{sub 2}O{sub 5} were investigated for second order optical nonlinear (SON) properties. Bulk glasses were studied by Raman spectroscopy, thermal analysis, optical and dielectric measurements. The sodium to barium substitution does not lead to significant changes in optical properties, crystallization of glasses and coordination environment of polarizable niobium atoms.
