Potential of using data assimilation to support forest planning
2017
Uncertainty in forest information typically results in economic and ecological losses as a consequence of suboptimal management decisions. Several techniques have been proposed to handle such uncertainties. However, these techniques are often complex and costly. Data assimilation (DA) has recently been advocated as a tool that may reduce the uncertainty, thereby improving the quality of forest planning results. It offers an opportunity to make use of all new sources of information in a systematic way and thus provides more accurate and up-to-date information to forest planning. In this study, we refer to literature on handling uncertainties in forest planning, as well as related literature…
Return Migration Process in Policy and Practice
2019
AbstractThis chapter focuses on return migration processes in Latvia, integrating analysis of return migration policy and the experiences of return migrants. The analysis considers the extent to which return policy activities correspond to the needs and expectations of the target group, and addresses the role of this policy in the process of making the decision to return. The data used for the analysis are policy planning documents, The Emigrant Communities of Latvia survey and in-depth interviews. The main empirical evidence of the return experiences of migrants in the chapter comes from 18 in-depth interviews with Latvian returnees from various age and social status groups, who left Latvi…
Deficiency in the Phosphorylated Pathway of Serine Biosynthesis Perturbs Sulfur Assimilation.
2018
Although the plant Phosphorylated Pathway of l-Ser Biosynthesis (PPSB) is essential for embryo and pollen development, and for root growth, its metabolic implications have not been fully investigated. A transcriptomics analysis of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) PPSB-deficient mutants at night, when PPSB activity is thought to be more important, suggested interaction with the sulfate assimilation process. Because sulfate assimilation occurs mainly in the light, we also investigated it in PPSB-deficient lines in the day. Key genes in the sulfate starvation response, such as the adenosine 5′phosphosulfate reductase genes, along with sulfate transporters, especially those involved in sulfat…
Comparison of rainfall structures between NCEP/NCAR reanalyses and observed data over tropical Africa
2000
A comparison is made between modelled (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) and observed (CRC and CRU dataset) annual and monthly precipitation over tropical Africa during the period 1958–1997. The split moving-windows dissimilarity analysis (SMWDA) is used to locate abrupt changes in rainfall time series. In the NCEP reanalysis data, we identify a main abrupt shift, which occurs in 1967 and concerns more than 50% of grid points. In the observation, this shift is only found over parts of tropical North Africa. Three other NCEP abrupt shifts (1975, 1983 and 1987) in the reanalysis shown by the SMWDA, each concerning about 20% of tropical Africa, are not identified in the observation. One hypothesis concern…
Phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase genes differentially affect Arabidopsis metabolism and development.
2021
[EN] Unlike animals, plants possess diverse L-serine (Ser) biosynthetic pathways. One of them, the Phosphorylated Pathway of Serine Biosynthesis (PPSB) has been recently described as essential for embryo, pollen and root development, and required for ammonium and sulfur assimilation. The first and rate limiting step of PPSB is the reaction catalyzed by the enzyme phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (PGDH). In Arabidopsis, the PGDH family consists of three genes, PGDH1, PGDH2 and PGDH3. PGDH1 is characterized as being the essential gene of the family. However, the biological significance of PGDH2 and PGDH3 remains unknown. In this manuscript, we have functionally characterized PGDH2 and PGDH3. Ph…
1999
Although this title might be somewhat provocative, there is no intent to be anti-schoelcherist. The aim is not to diminish Victor Schoelcher's considerable achievements, but to fight against the unanimous preconceptions that have transformed this man into a myth. By studying the legal and political consequences of his proposals and his engagements, we have underlined not only the extent and complexity of his work for the Republic - that has been little known up to now, though Schoelcher ought to be considered to be one of the fathers of the Republic - but his contradictions too. Schoelcher was so sure of the virtues of the republican values of the mother country, that his fight, albeit huma…
HErZ: The German Hans-Ertel Centre for Weather Research
2016
AbstractIn 2011, the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development laid the foundation of the Hans-Ertel Centre for Weather Research [Hans-Ertel-Zentrum für Wetterforschung (HErZ)] in order to better connect fundamental meteorological research and teaching at German universities and atmospheric research centers with the needs of the German national weather service Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD). The concept for HErZ was developed by DWD and its scientific advisory board with input from the entire German meteorological community. It foresees core research funding of about €2,000,000 yr−1 over a 12-yr period, during which time permanent research groups must be established…
