Ultralight dark photon as a model for early universe dark matter
2019
Dark photon is a massive vector field which interacts only with the physical photon through the kinetic mixing. This coupling is assumed to be weak so that the dark photon becomes almost unobservable in processes with elementary particles, but can serve as a dark matter particle. We argue that in very early Universe ($z>3000$) this vector field may have the equation of state of radiation ($w=1/3$) but later behaves as cold dark matter ($w=0$). This may slightly change the expansion rate of the Universe at early time and reduce the value of the sound horizon of baryon acoustic oscillations (standard ruler). As a result, in this model the value of the Hubble constant appears to be larger than…
Nonminimal dark sector physics and cosmological tensions
2019
We explore whether non-standard dark sector physics might be required to solve the existing cosmological tensions. The properties we consider in combination are an interaction between the dark matter and dark energy components, and a dark energy equation of state $w$ different from that of the canonical cosmological constant $w=-1$. In principle, these two parameters are independent. In practice, to avoid early-time, superhorizon instabilities, their allowed parameter spaces are correlated. We analyze three classes of extended interacting dark energy models in light of the 2019 Planck CMB results and Cepheid-calibrated local distance ladder $H_0$ measurements of Riess et al. (R19), as well …
Cosmological searches for a non-cold dark matter component
2017
We explore an extended cosmological scenario where the dark matter is an admixture of cold and additional non-cold species. The mass and temperature of the non-cold dark matter particles are extracted from a number of cosmological measurements. Among others, we consider tomographic weak lensing data and Milky Way dwarf satellite galaxy counts. We also study the potential of these scenarios in alleviating the existing tensions between local measurements and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) estimates of the $S_8$ parameter, with $S_8=\sigma_8\sqrt{\Omega_m}$, and of the Hubble constant $H_0$. In principle, a sub-dominant, non-cold dark matter particle with a mass $m_X\sim$~keV, could achieve…
Invisible neutrino decay in precision cosmology
2021
We revisit the topic of invisible neutrino decay in the precision cosmological context, via a first-principles approach to understanding the cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure phenomenology of such a non-standard physics scenario. Assuming an effective Lagrangian in which a heavier standard-model neutrino $\nu_H$ couples to a lighter one $\nu_l$ and a massless scalar particle $\phi$ via a Yukawa interaction, we derive from first principles the complete set of Boltzmann equations, at both the spatially homogeneous and the first-order inhomogeneous levels, for the phase space densities of $\nu_H$, $\nu_l$, and $\phi$ in the presence of the relevant decay and inverse decay p…
The present and future of the most favoured inflationary models after $Planck$ 2015
2015
The value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in the region allowed by the latest $Planck$ 2015 measurements can be associated to a large variety of inflationary models. We discuss here the potential of future Cosmic Microwave Background cosmological observations in disentangling among the possible theoretical scenarios allowed by our analyses of current $Planck$ temperature and polarization data. Rather than focusing only on $r$, we focus as well on the running of the primordial power spectrum, $\alpha_s$ and the running of thereof, $\beta_s$. Our Fisher matrix method benefits from a detailed and realistic appraisal of the expected foregrounds. Future cosmological probes, as the COrE mission…
Dynamical Dark sectors and Neutrino masses and abundances
2020
We investigate generalized interacting dark matter-dark energy scenarios with a time-dependent coupling parameter, allowing also for freedom in the neutrino sector. The models are tested in the phantom and quintessence regimes, characterized by an equation of state $w_x-1$, respectively. Our analyses show that for some of the scenarios the existing tensions on the Hubble constant $H_0$ and on the clustering parameter $S_8$ can be significantly alleviated. The relief is either due to \textit{(a)} a dark energy component which lies within the phantom region; or \textit{(b)} the presence of a dynamical coupling in quintessence scenarios. The inclusion of massive neutrinos into the interaction …
Can interacting dark energy solve the $H_0$ tension?
2017
The answer is Yes! We indeed find that interacting dark energy can alleviate the current tension on the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ between the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies constraints obtained from the Planck satellite and the recent direct measurements reported by Riess et al. 2016. The combination of these two datasets points towards an evidence for a non-zero dark matter-dark energy coupling $\xi$ at more than two standard deviations, with $\xi=-0.26_{-0.12}^{+0.16}$ at $95\%$ CL. However the $H_0$ tension is better solved when the equation of state of the interacting dark energy component is allowed to freely vary, with a phantom-like equation of state $w=-1.184\pm0.…
Gravitational wave probes of axionlike particles
2020
We have recently shown that axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) may emit an observable stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background when they begin to oscillate in the early universe. In this note, we identify the regions of ALP parameter space which may be probed by future GW detectors, including ground- and space-based interferometers and pulsar timing arrays. Interestingly, these experiments have the ability to probe axions from the bottom up, i.e. in the very weakly coupled regime which is otherwise unconstrained. Furthermore, we discuss the effects of finite dark photon mass and kinetic mixing on the mechanism, as well as the (in)sensitivity to couplings of the axion to Standard Mo…
Electroweak baryogenesis and dark matter from a singlet Higgs
2012
If the Higgs boson H couples to a singlet scalar S via lambda_m |H|^2 S^2, a strong electroweak phase transition can be induced through a large potential barrier that exists already at zero temperature. In this case properties of the phase transition can be computed analytically. We show that electroweak baryogenesis can be achieved using CP violation from a dimension-6 operator that couples S to the top-quark mass, suppressed by a new physics scale that can be well above 1 TeV. Moreover the singlet is a dark matter candidate whose relic density is < 3% of the total dark matter density, but which nevertheless interacts strongly enough with nuclei (through Higgs exchange) to be just below…
All-inclusive interacting dark sector cosmologies
2020
In this paper we explore possible extensions of Interacting Dark Energy cosmologies, where Dark Energy and Dark Matter interact non-gravitationally with one another. In particular, we focus on the neutrino sector, analyzing the effect of both neutrino masses and the effective number of neutrino species. We consider the Planck 2018 legacy release data combined with several other cosmological probes, finding no evidence for new physics in the dark radiation sector. The current neutrino constraints from cosmology should be therefore regarded as robust, as they are not strongly dependent on the dark sector physics, once all the available observations are combined. Namely, we find a total neutri…
