Augmented Reality in minimally invasive otologic surgery and transmodiolar cochlear implantation

2021

Optimal exposure is necessary for minimally invasive otologic surgery. Augmented reality allows to enrich the real environment by adding data without replacing it by a virtual environment and to view this information on a single screen by combining the vision of the operating field and the imaging. This technique is very little described in otology in the literature. This project aims to develop augmented reality solutions for otological surgeries and transmodiolar implantation. To prepare this augmented reality project, we studied the visualization of the middle ear by a virtual endoscope based on preoperative high resolution CT-scans. Then, we worked on the application of augmented realit…

Efficacy of augmented reality versus conventional physical therapy for the improvement of balance, gait, upper-limb and dual task in people with mult…

2022

Interacting with Augmented Environments

2010

Pervasive systems augment environments by integrating information processing into everyday objects and activities. They consist of two parts: a visible part populated by animate (visitors, operators) or inanimate (AI) entities interacting with the environment through digital devices, and an invisible part composed of software objects performing specific tasks in an underlying framework. This paper shows an ongoing work from the University of Palermo''s Department of Computer Science and Engineering that addresses two issues related to simplifying and broadening augmented environment access.

Mobile agents and knowledge discovery in ubiquitous computing

2004

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a knowledge discovery strategy to be performed by mobile agents in an augmented reality (AR) scenario. AR entities are implemented by mobile agents who perform all the behaviors of cooperating entities. Among other tasks, mobile agents implement a resource discovery strategy, which is aimed at filling lacking entities with missing methods and knowledge rules. A three layer entity description model and a cooperation mechanism are discussed, which allow knowledge and methods to be shared between entities in augmented reality. Three layers host three different projection descriptions of an AR entity respectively are: (1) a semantic projection for knowle…

A Cost-Effective 3D Acquisition and Visualization Framework for Cultural Heritage

2020

Museums and cultural institutions, in general, are in a constant challenge of adding more value to their collections. The attractiveness of assets is practically tightly related to their value obeying the offer and demand law. New digital visualization technologies are found to give more excitements, especially to the younger generation as it is proven by multiple studies. Nowadays, museums around the world are currently trying to promote their collections through new multimedia and digital technologies such as 3D modeling, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and serious games. However, the difficulty and the resources required to implement such technologies present a real challen…

Teaching immersive journalism

2021

This chapter adds value by offering an overview and fresh insights from some of the leading journalism educators in the world, focusing on the interplay of emergent technologies and journalism, especially in relation to immersive journalism. So far, journalism educators have not been at the forefront of immersive journalism studies, although journalists, content, and audiences, especially students, have received attention. The chapter maps the journalism educators that have been teaching Immersive Journalism courses. Associate Professor of Practice Robert Hernandez from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles has been teaching immersive technologies for journalism since 2012. He …

Augmented Reality of the Middle Ear Combining Otoendoscopy and Temporal Bone Computed Tomography

2018

International audience; HYPOTHESIS:Augmented reality (AR) may enhance otologic procedures by providing sub-millimetric accuracy and allowing the unification of information in a single screen.BACKGROUND:Several issues related to otologic procedures can be addressed through an AR system by providing sub-millimetric precision, supplying a global view of the middle ear cleft, and advantageously unifying the information in a single screen. The AR system is obtained by combining otoendoscopy with temporal bone computer tomography (CT).METHODS:Four human temporal bone specimens were explored by high-resolution CT-scan and dynamic otoendoscopy with video recordings. The initialization of the system…

Virtual Reality and Other Realities

2017

Abstract In this chapter, we describe virtual reality and other mixed reality technological tools, highlighting the role they can play in the Clinical and Health Psychology fields: as stimulating, safe and controlled therapeutic contexts for applying psychological treatments; as ecological settings for conducting psychological assessment; and as a realistic laboratory for psychopathology to test research questions that would be very difficult or impossible to address in a traditional laboratory setting. The existing meta-analyses and systematic reviews of their efficacy are presented. The majority of studies have used virtual realities (VRs) as exposure techniques. This is not surprising, c…
