Autorytarna merytokracja — zarys modeluijego legitymizacja na przykładzie Chin
2021
The article analyses the model of authoritarian meritocracy and its legitimisation on the example of the Chinese People’s Republic. The discussed model is based on three principles: 1. power is exercised by a monoparticle elite that legitimises its position on the basis of moral and substantive criteria; 2. patriarchal and anti-democratic governance; 3. the authorities’ policy aims to meet the material needs of citizens, but without granting them political rights. The Communist Party of China in its official narrative, on the one hand, refers to the assumptions of Maoism, but on the other hand, to a much greater extent — especially in the field of economic cases and the operation of the adm…
"The Dutch Legacy in the Indonesian Parliament"
2013
th century; Parliamentary procedure Abstract The Indonesian parliament, the DPR, today presents its similar characteristics as the Dutch parliament in the 19 th century. The historical trajectories show that when establishing the core of the parliament institution, the founding fathers copied what the colonial government had been practiced, and maintained during the authoritarian regime in Indonesia, accordingly the Dutch legacy lingered. Consequently, in the wave of democratic era, after the fall of the authoritarian president, the same institution should have adapted itself into a more democratic institution, but remained weak due to its outdated characteristics. This paper shows the hist…
Legiones y Falanges: prensa populista y literatura
2020
Addressing people in order to enforce their power is a common feature of different political parties and governments, regardless of whether they are right wing or left wing, and, in this process, the press plays a crucial role. In this context, the bilingual publication Legioni e Falangi. Rivista d’Italia e di Spagna/Legiones y Falanges. Revista mensual de Italia y de España (1940–43) is a paradigmatic example. Some of the most important intellectuals of the time, including Azorín, Manuel Machado and Gerardo Diego, wrote in this magazine, facing historical reality of Fascism and Francoism and generating unexpected results. Hoy en día la relación osmótica entre populismo y medios de comunica…

2018
After toppling the 61-year dominant Barisan Nasional through a historic election victory in May 2018, expectations are high for the new ruling government led by Mahathir Mohamad and the Pakatan Harapan to fulfil their promises for socio-economic reforms and regime change in Malaysia. But what have been the institutions of the prevailing regime that need to be reformed and changed? This article offers a critical review of the evolving development agendas since the 1990s of the successive governments of Mahathir Mohamad, Abdullah Badawi, and Najib Razak, each couched in different catchphrases: Wawasan 2020, Islam Hadhari, and 1Malaysia. A close reading of these programs suggests that their su…
On the dynamics of disobedience: experimental investigations of defying unjust authority.
2017
Across six Experimental conditions with university student participants (N=600), we examined some of the dynamics underlying expressed defiance to unjust authority. Results revealed disobedience was best enacted by participants low in right-wing authoritarianism and was more likely to occur when: 1) in physical proximity of other rebels, 2) the authority made two demanding requests instead of one, and 3) there had been an earlier opposition to injustice. Results are discussed within the theoretical framework of bounded rationality.
Digital Activism in Russia: The Evolution and Forms of Online Participation in an Authoritarian State
2020
AbstractThis chapter describes how digitalization has affected activism in Russia by tracing the evolution, particularity, and the most visible forms of online activism in the context of the increasingly authoritarian Russian state. It discusses online activism in relation to “connective action” and illustrates it with two examples of contentious political activism: the anti-corruption campaign led by Alexei Navalny and the struggle to protect online communication from state surveillance by the Telegram messenger service. In addition, the chapter presents examples of Russian activism, which do not directly challenge the Kremlin.
