Aggregated Packet Transmission in Duty-Cycled WSNs: Modeling and Performance Evaluation

2017

[EN] Duty cycling (DC) is a popular technique for energy conservation in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that allows nodes to wake up and sleep periodically. Typically, a single-packet transmission (SPT) occurs per cycle, leading to possibly long delay. With aggregated packet transmission (APT), nodes transmit a batch of packets in a single cycle. The potential benefits brought by an APT scheme include shorter delay, higher throughput, and higher energy efficiency. In the literature, different analytical models have been proposed to evaluate the performance of SPT schemes. However, no analytical models for the APT mode on synchronous DC medium access control (MAC) mechanisms exist. In this …

Eletric vehicles impact using renewable energy

2015

In this moment, the principle topics for the modern world are the reduction of environmental pollution and the production of energy from renewable sources (for example photovoltaic system, wind farm, hydroelectric plants, etc.). This particular attention is determined by different reasons, in particular from the Kyoto Protocol, and from different problems as greenhouse effect, acid rain and climate change. The scope of this work is to study, for different years (1997-2013) in Italy, the production of electric energy from renewable and non-renewable. At a later stage, the attention will be on the consumption of the electric energy divided for different sectors. In particular, we study the po…

Feasibility analysis of a renewable hybrid energy system with producer gas generator fulfilling remote household electricity demand in Southern Norway

2016

Abstract Hybrid energy system is increasingly emerging as an option to produce energy for the remote areas. This paper presented an economic feasibility analysis of a single standalone house operating with a hybrid power plant consisting of a fixed capacity producer gas generator (2 kWe) and other renewable energy sources (Photovoltaic and wind). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory's Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewable (HOMER) was employed which evaluated techno-economic analysis based on the criteria of net present cost and levelized cost of electricity. Taking the site specific daily average solar radiation, average wind speed and load data into account, renewable hybrid…

Pitch controller modeling for wind turbine power regulation using feed forward control strategies

2015

In this work, pitch controlled power regulation of a horizontal axis wind turbine coupled with a fixed speed asynchronous generator is studied using SimulationX®. Wind turbines need to be operated as per specified power output vs wind speed characteristics of it. If the wind speed is between the cut-in wind speed and the rated wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated constant Cp. If wind speed is between the rated speed and the cut-off wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated for constant rated power. To extract rated power above rated wind speed a proper controller strategy is required. This work provides a simulation model for power regulation of a horizontal a…

Optimal Energy Management of Smart Grids With Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles

2015

In this paper, smart grids based on Renewable Energy Sources are addressed. An Italian case study which has been developed in the frame of the research project i-NEXT (Innovation for green Energy and eXchange in Transportation) is presented. Storage elements are included. Electric and fuel cell powered vehicles' charging stations are here included as local loads. In this paper, power management algorithms and the control logic are described. The control subsystem aims at an efficient management of the involved renewable energy sources avoiding faults in the power system and ensuring a fully functional supply of local loads. A “Service Center” software collecting data from renewable sources,…

GA-ANN for Short-Term Wind Energy Prediction

2011

Wind turbine power output is totally intermittent in the nature. For grid connected wind turbine generators, power system operators (transmission system operators) need reliable and robust wind power forecasting system. Rapid changes in the wind generation relative to the load require proper energy management system to maintain the power system stability and of course to balance the power generation, frequency, voltage regulation within the statutory limits. Accurate wind energy forecasting helps the power system transmission system operators in anticipating rapid changes in wind turbine power output with respect to load and helps in making decision not only for optimum energy management bu…

Battery storage systems for peak load shaving applications: Part 1: Operating strategy and modification of the power diagram

2016

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) are gaining more and more attention in the current global energy landscape, thanks to some peculiar characteristics such as the versatility, modularity, scalability, fast response time, etc. BESSs can advantageously be used in the ancillary services market, in order to provide all the services necessary to ensure the stability and the reliability of the power system. Among other applications, BESS can also be used to shift electricity demand from on-peak to off-peak periods, also contributing to relieve peak demand charges, thus ensuring a saving for the customers. The BESS is charged when the electricity prices are the lowest (during the night) and di…

Supercharging the Double-Fueled Spark Ignition Engine: Performance and Efficiency

2017

Internal combustion engine development focuses mainly on two aspects: fuel economy improvement and pollutant emissions reduction. As a consequence, light duty spark ignition (SI) engines have become smaller, supercharged, and equipped with direct injection and advanced valve train control systems. The use of alternative fuels, such as natural gas (NG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), thanks to their lower cost and environmental impact, widely spread in the automotive market, above all in bifuel vehicles, whose spark ignited engines may run either with gasoline or with gaseous fuel. The authors in previous works experimentally tested the strong engine efficiency increment and pollutant emi…

An energy and power based approach toward design of power split for urban hybrid vehicle

2011

This work presents a novel method of analyzing real and artificial urban driving cycles with regard to power and energy needs. The results can be used to facilitate the design of the power split between primary and secondary power sources for hybrid vehicles in urban applications. Based on the analysis of different real and artificial driving cycles three key values are defined that allow predefining the size of the primary and secondary power source.

The Urban Driving Cycle test is performed in MATLAB environment. Effective operating conditions of the whole fuel cell powered motor are accurately emulated according to actual regulations in force. The emulated current profile is used for experimental tests on a 5kW Nuvera PowerFlow stack. Thanks to the proposed approach, the motor and inverter drives are accurately emulated and the provided test-bench is used to evaluate performances of the stack under test for automotive applications. Simulation and experimental results are compa…
