Refitting of an eco-friendly sailing yacht: numerical prediction and experimental validation
2016
A 4.60 m sailing yacht, made with a flax fiber composite and wood, has been refitted with the aim of hull weight reduction and performance improvement during regattas. The first objective was obtained with a lightening of internal hull reinforcements while the second one with a reduction of the maximum beam, in order to minimize the longitudinal moment of inertia. The refitting was first simulated via CAD-FEM interaction to establish the feasibility of the procedure and to verify the structural integrity. The resulting hull was then instrumented with strain gauges and tested under typical rigging and sailing conditions. Results obtained by the numerical modeling and measured from experiment…
Mathematical models for assessment of vehicle crashworthiness: a review
2021
This article reviews approaches to mathematical modeling of a vehicle crash. The growing focus on vehicle and occupant safety in car crashes has triggered the need to study vehicle crashworthiness in the initial stages of vehicle development. The major motivation for this work is to support vehicle crashworthiness design during the product development process. The article is divided into two parts; the first one overviews existing mathematical models used to solve engineering problems. The second part describes modeling strategies applied for replicating non-linear vehicle crash event and occupant kinematics in an occupant protection loadcase. We also highlight alternative modeling strategie…
Special Section on ITS Services to Smart City Context [Guest Editorial]
2018
The seven articles in this special section focus on new trends and developments in the intelligent transportation markets. Since the earliest of times, transportation has changed and revolutionized society and industry. Many of technology advances were focused on transportation and their means (road, rail, air, water, etc.) even, today there exist several areas of the knowledge that are focused on it. As time goes by, new terms have been established where technology is present as well, for instance, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Smart Cities, Smart Territory, Blockchain, Internet of Things, virtualization, Cloud computing, Intelligent Vehicles, embedded computing, Deep learning,…
Optimum pulse shape for minimum spectral occupancy in FSK signals
1984
The characteristics of a frequency shift keying (FSK) signal giving rise to maximum power within a prescribed frequency band are determined. The baseband pulse shape extends over any integer number of bit periods. An integral equation for the optimum pulse shape is derived and some simple properties of the solution are investigated. The equation has been solved for some values of the product of the prescribed band times the pulse duration and the signal shape is shown. Our results for the particular case of pulses only one bit period long are presented for purpose of comparison with results known in the literature. Plots of out-of-band power for some values of the prescribed band and of pul…

Analysis of a Gas Turbine Almost Real Open Cycle Linked to the SOFC Module Behaviour
2005
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are particular promising electrochemical generators for their high operating temperature that makes them suitable for integration with gas turbine cycles and cogeneration. The kind of fuel cell taken into account is the tubular SOFC technology, mainly developed by Siemens-Westinghouse. The SOFC module is fed with natural gas with internal reforming and internal air preheating. Elevated pressures are adopted in order to increase both fuel cell efficiency and power density. The inlet air temperature is set to 630 °C, and the inlet fuel temperature to 200 °C. The heat generated by irreversibility at the electrodes structure is given to the fuel and air flow, and …
On the Assessment of Fitness to Drive: Steering and Brake Operative Forces
2021
[EN] The Directive (EU) 2015/653 aimed at facilitating that the maximum force that any disabled driver could make on the vehicle's primary controls could be adjusted to their needs. The technical adjustment in the vehicle's design requires a measurement of the operational forces applied by the driver on the steering and brake controls, in order to determine its functional capacity during the execution of driving maneuvers. The objective of this paper is to define the steering and braking operative forces used for driving current market M1 motor vehicles for the ¿fitness to drive assessment of drivers with physical disabilities. A total of 200 trials were performed with 17 different vehicles…
An optimization approach for efficient management of EV parking lots with batteries recharging facilities
2013
In this paper an optimization approach to devise efficient management strategies for Electric Vehicles parking lots is proposed. A Monte Carlo approach is used to evaluate the load consumption profile for groups of Electric Vehicles showing different features. The Monte Carlo approach allows to combine the different social and economical features affecting the commercial penetration of Electric Vehicles with the technical aspects. The basic feature to be assessed is the initial State Of Charge, which in turn depends on the distance travelled by the vehicle since the last recharge and thus by the usage of the vehicle (private, professional). The model is then used to optimize some objective …
Evaluation of Roundabout Safety Performance through Surrogate Safety Measures from Microsimulation
2018
The paper presents a microsimulation-based approach for roundabout safety performance evaluation. Based on a sample of Slovenian roundabouts, the vehicle trajectories exported from AIMSUN and VISSIM were used to estimate traffic conflicts using the Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM). AIMSUN and VISSIM were calibrated for single-lane, double-lane and turbo roundabouts using the corresponding empirical capacity function which included critical and follow-up headways estimated through meta-analysis. Based on calibration of the microsimulation models, a crash prediction model from simulated peak hour conflicts for a sample of Slovenian roundabouts was developed. A generalized linear model…
A Life Cycle Environmental Impact Comparison between Traditional, Hybrid, and Electric Vehicles in the European Context
2021
Global warming (GW) and urban pollution focused a great interest on hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) as cleaner alternatives to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). The environmental impact related to the use of both ICEV and HEV mainly depends on the fossil fuel used by the thermal engines, while, in the case of the BEV, depends on the energy sources employed to produce electricity. Moreover, the production phase of each vehicle may also have a relevant environmental impact, due to the manufacturing processes and the materials employed. Starting from these considerations, the authors carried out a fair comparison of the environmental …
