Comparative Economic Cycles

2008

The income cycles that have been experienced by six OECD countries over the past 24 years are analysed. The amplitude of the cycles relative to the level of aggregate income varies amongst the countries, as does the degree of the damping that affects the cycles. The study aims to reveal both of these characteristics. It also seeks to determine whether there exists a clear relationship between the degree of damping and the length of the cycles. In order to estimate the parameters of the cycles, the data have been subjected to the processes of detrending, anti-alias filtering and subsampling.

Calibration of misonidazole labeling by simultaneous measurement of oxygen tension and labeling density in multicellular spheroids

1995

To correlate misonidazole concentrations and oxygen pressures (Po2) at identical locations within EMT6/Ro multi-cell spheroids (mean diameters +/- SD: 867 +/- 20 microns), Po2 measurements were performed with oxygen-sensitive microelectrodes during incubation of these spheroids with tritiated misonidazole (10 mg/I; 445 microCi/mg). In each individual spheroid, Po2 profiles were correlated with the corresponding spatial distribution of misonidazole as quantified by conventional autoradiography and grain counting. To compare the oxygenation status of spheroids in the measuring chamber with that of spheroids in spinner culture, misonidazole labeling was performed in both environments following…

Vascularity, perfusion rate and local tissue oxygenation of tumors derived from ras-transformed fibroblasts.

2007

Tumors derived from ras-transformed rat fibroblasts were investigated in order to gain insight into possible interrelationships between oncogenic transformations and therapeutically relevant parameters of the metabolic micromilieu of solid tumors in vivo. Tumors grew in nude mice after injection of in vitro-passaged cells. Growth rates, early stages of angiogenesis, perfusion and tissue oxygenation were assessed. Compared with the parental cell line, both ras transformants grew very rapidly and exhibited an early onset of angiogenesis. Perfusion rates of one ras-transformed tumor line were similar to those of the parental tumors whereas reduced flow values were detected in tumors of the oth…

Pixel-to-pixel correlation between images of absolute ATP concentrations and blood flow in tumours

1992

Iodo(14C-)antipyrine autoradiography and imaging bioluminescence have been combined to obtain pixel-to-pixel correlations between absolute values for local blood flow and ATP concentrations at a microscopical level within designated areas in hamster melanomas. Positive pixel-to-pixel correlations were obtained in 4 of 6 tumours. Both flow and ATP values were less in mostly necrotic than in mostly viable tumour regions. The data provide evidence for the energetic state of cancer cells being strongly influenced by the efficiency of tumour microcirculation in several but not in all malignancies investigated. Sites of sulfatation in the chondrocytes of the articular cartilage of the rabbit

1977

35S sulfate uptake by the articular cartilage chondrocytes, from biopsies of rabbit, have been studied by high resolution autoradiography. The Golgi apparatus, rough endoplasmic reticulum, cytosol, cytoplasmic membrane and extracellular space were considered as cell compartments in the quantitative analysis of the autoradiograms. The results obtained show: 1) a high activity of radiosotope incorporation in the Golgi apparatus; 2) a fast rhythm of transfer of the substances labelled in the Golgi apparatus to the cell membrane; 3) significant labelling of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, throughout the experiment. It is concluded: 1) The grains observed in the rough endoplasmic reticulum show…

Linear and nonlinear parametric model identification to assess granger causality in short-term cardiovascular interactions

2008

We assessed directional relationships between short RR interval and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability series according to the concept of Granger causality. Causality was quantified as the predictability improvement (PI) of a time series obtained when samples of the other series were used for prediction, i.e. moving from autoregressive (AR) to AR exogenous (ARX) prediction. AR and ARX predictions were performed both by linear and nonlinear parametric models. The PIs of RR given SAP and of SAP given RR, measuring baroreflex and mechanical couplings, were calculated in 15 healthy subjects in the resting supine and upright tilt positions. Using nonlinear models we found a bilateral i…

Need of causal analysis for assessing phase relationships in closed loop interacting cardiovascular variability series

2003

The phase spectra obtained by the classical closed loop autoregressive model (2AR) and by an open loop autoregressive model (ARXAR) were compared to shed light on the need of introducing causality in the assessment of the delay between RR and arterial pressure oscillations. The reliability of the two approaches was tested in simulation and real data setting. In simulation, the coupling strength of a bivariate closed loop process was adjusted to obtain a range of working conditions from open to closed loop. In open loop condition, 2AR and ARXAR phases were comparable and in agreement with the imposed delay. In closed loop condition, ARXAR model returned the imposed delays, while 2AR showed a…

Binucleate cells in the Ehrlich ascites tumor. Autoradiographic labeling

1989

Abstract An autoradiographic study was performed on binucleate and mitotic cells in the Ehrlich ascites tumor (EAT) untreated and after treatment with 5-fluorouracil (FU). The number of binucleate cells was greater in the treated tumor than in the controls. It was also observed that the number of labeled mitoses was greater in the Fu-treated tumor. Autoradiographic labeling showed that the cells that proved to be binucleate had previously passed through S-phase; thus, these cells belonged to the proliferative compartment.
