Ultrasonic Guided Waves-Based Monitoring of Rail Head: Laboratory and Field Tests in Advances in Civil Engineering
2010
Recent train accidents have reaffirmed the need for developing a rail defect detection system more effective than that currently used. One of the most promising techniques in rail inspection is the use of ultrasonic guided waves and noncontact probes. A rail inspection prototype based on these concepts and devoted to the automatic damage detection of defects in rail head is the focus of this paper. The prototype includes an algorithm based on wavelet transform and outlier analysis. The discrete wavelet transform is utilized to denoise ultrasonic signals and to generate a set of relevant damage sensitive data. These data are combined into a damage index vector fed to an unsupervised learning…
Improved Global-Local method for ultrasonic guided wave scattering predictions in composite waveguides and defects
2022
As structures increase in complexity, both in the use of advanced materials and high-performing designs such as composite assemblies, their health assessment becomes increasingly challenging. Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) have shown to be very promising in the inspection of large (i.e. aerospace components) attenuating (i.e. composite materials) structures and have been successfully employed for damage detection in a variety of fields. The intrinsic complex nature of UGWs, due to their dispersive behavior, combined with the structural complexity of the applications, though, requires improved inspection solutions of higher resolution and accuracy to ensure efficient and safe operations. The…
Growth and defense in deciduous trees and shrubs under UV-B
2005
Abstract Reflection by waxy or resinous surface structures and hairs, repair reactions of biomolecules and induction of different sheltering components provide the means of plant protection from harmful solar UV-B radiation. Secondary products, especially flavonoids and phenolic acids as defense components are also important in plant tolerance to UV-B, fulfilling the dual role as screens that reduce UV-B penetration in plant tissues, and as antioxidants protecting from damage by reactive oxidant species. Plants are sensitive to UV-B radiation, and this sensitivity can be even more clone-specific than species-specific. The results available in the literature for deciduous trees and shrubs in…
Complex-Valued Independent Component Analysis of Natural Images
2011
Linear independent component analysis (ICA) learns simple cell receptive fields fromnatural images. Here,we showthat linear complex-valued ICA learns complex cell properties from Fourier-transformed natural images, i.e. two Gabor-like filters with quadrature-phase relationship. Conventional methods for complex-valued ICA assume that the phases of the output signals have uniform distribution. We show here that for natural images the phase distributions are, however, often far from uniform. We thus relax the uniformity assumption and model also the phase of the sources in complex-valued ICA. Compared to the original complex ICA model, the new model provides a better fit to the data, and leads…
Search for transient sources with the ANTARES and KM3NeT neutrino telescopes in the multi-messenger astronomy era
2020
Nonstationary response envelope probability densities of nonlinear oscillators
2006
The nonstationary random response of a class of lightly damped nonlinear oscillators subjected to Gaussian white noise is considered. An approximate analytical method for determining the response envelope statistics is presented. Within the framework of stochastic averaging, the procedure relies on the Markovian modeling of the response envelope process through the definition of an equivalent linear system with response-dependent parameters. An approximate solution of the associated Fokker-Planck equation is derived by resorting to a Galerkin scheme. Specifically, the nonstationary probability density function of the response envelope is expressed as the sum of a time-dependent Rayleigh dis…
Natural optical anisotropy of h-BN: Highest giant birefringence in a bulk crystal through the mid-infrared to ultraviolet range
2018
The giant birefringence of layered h-BN was demonstrated by analyzing the interference patterns in reflectance and transmittance measurements in the mid-infrared to the deep ultraviolet energy range. The refractive index for polarization perpendicular to the c axis is much higher than the refractive index for polarization parallel to the c axis, and it displays a strong increase in the ultraviolet range that is attributed to the huge excitonic effects arising from the unique electronic structure of h-BN. Thus, h-BN is shown to exhibit a giant negative birefringence that ranges from -0.7 in the visible to -2 in the deep ultraviolet close to the band gap. The electronic dielectric constants f…
