Prevalence of carotid artery calcifications among 2,500 digital panoramic radiographs of an adult Brazilian population

2018

Background The aim of the present study was to analyze the epidemiological data of digital panoramic radiographs revealing suggestive images of carotid artery calcifications (CAC) from a Northeast Brazilian population. Material and Methods A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted with 2,500 digital panoramic radiographs obtained from a single imaging reference center in Northeast Brazil. Images from individuals of both sexes and older than 18 years were included and those that did not cover the region of cervical vertebrae or presented low radiographic quality were excluded. Data were analyzed regarding prevalence, location (bilateral, right or left), sex, and age using the Chi-s…

Plant-animal interactions in fire-prone ecosystems

2018

Analysis of familial incidence of non-syndromic cleft lip and palate in a Brazilian population

2009

Background: The purpose of this study is to follow the familial incidence of non-syndromic or isolated cleft lip, with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), and to analyze the relationships between the type of NSCL/P in the affected individual and his/her parent, looking at children in the first grade. Material and Methods: To investigate the familial incidence of NSCL/P we analyzed the records of 185 patients from 2004-2008, retrospectively. Detailed histories were collected regarding the familial incidence of NSCL/P. For the 185 individuals, the relationship between the type of NSCL/P and the sociodemographic and personal characteristics of the affected person and her/his cleft relatives was …

Retrospective study of 289 odontogenic tumors in a Brazilian population

2016

Background: Odontogenic tumors (OTs) are considered important among oral lesions because of their clinicopathological heterogeneity, and variable biological behavior. This paper aims to determine the frequency and distribution of OTs, over a period of 10 years, at a public university in Northeastern Brazil and compare this data with previous reports. Material and Methods: We reviewed all cases of OTs from oral pathology laboratory of University of Pernambuco (UPE), from 2004 to 2014. Diagnoses were re-evaluated and the tumors were classified according to the latest (2005) World Health Organization Classification of Tumors. In addition, we searched in the English-language literature retrospe…

The relative frequency of odontogenic tumors : a study of 376 cases in a Brazilian population

2017

Background Odontogenic tumors (OTs) are rare lesions, exclusive of the jaws, that are derived from epithelial and/or ectomesenchymal elements of the tooth-forming apparatus. Their biological behavior is heterogeneous, including hamartomatous tissue proliferation, benign nonaggressive and aggressive neoplasms, and malignant tumors with metastatic capacity. The aim of this study was to describe the relative frequency of odontogenic tumors in a Brazilian population. In addition, a review of the literature identified studies on odontogenic tumors that follow the 2005 World Health Organization. Material and Methods A total of 376 cases of odontogenic tumors from an oral pathology service were re…

Encuentro de saberes: Huellas de memoria pluriversa y descolonización de la Universidad contemporánea

2018

This paper studies the Encounter of Knowledge as a project that, by welcoming mestres and mestras of ancestral knowledge into universities, contributes to decolonize higher education, broadening its field of memory. Based on a systematization exercise, we established a theoretical dialogue with Bajtin and Bejamin. Based on the participation of four mestres -Lucely Pío, raicera del Cerrado, Mãe Lu and Tata Mutá Imé, religious leaders of Candomblé and the political leader and shaman Álvaro Tukano of the Tukano nation- we show how the project promotes in the contemporary Brazilian university a space of mnemic pluriversity, capable of activating diverse narrative planes (biographical, political…

Para uma cooperação da escuta e do movimento: Estudo intercultural sobre a percepção dos ritmos tradicionais do Xangô (Olinda, PE)

2010

Combining musical cognition and ethnomusicological approaches, this article seeks to verify if the capacity of recognizing and actually doing the appropriate beat of musical rhythms after listening to musical excerpts is influenced by the movements of the body. We would like to show to what extent variables like "musical competence" ("musicians" and "non-musicians") and "cultural origin" ("Brazilians" and "French") do influence such capacity. We try to answer these questions by applying an experimental protocol designed for that end. The musical rhythms used in the experiment are drawn from the musical and religious traditions of the xangô african-brazilian cult, as they are practiced in Ol…

Quality of information about oral cancer in Brazilian Portuguese available on Google, Youtube, and Instagram

2020

Background To evaluate the quality of oral cancer information in Brazilian Portuguese on Google, YouTube, and Instagram. Material and Methods The first 100 links of each platform characterized the initial sample. The websites and Instagram were evaluated using the JAMA benchmarks, the Discern instrument, and the Flesch readability index (Flesch Reading Ease). The existence of Health on the Net (HON) code was also registered on websites. The usefulness of each video on YouTube was classified as not useful, slightly useful, moderately useful, or very useful. Results Thirty-four websites, 39 Instagram posts, and 57 videos were evaluated, of which 18 (33.3%) websites and 19 (48.7%) Instagram po…

Prevalence of oral mucosal lesions in a brazilian military police population.

2014

Background Data obtained from oral health surveys are very important for identifying disease-susceptible groups and for developing dental care and prevention programs. So, the purpose of the current article was to investigate the prevalence of oral mucosa lesions (OMLs) in a population of Brazilian police. Material and Methods Interviews and oral cavity examinations were performed on a sample of 395 police officers who were randomly selected by the calibrated researcher. The number of individuals was obtained by a sample calculation using the finite population correction. The diagnostic criteria were based on the WHO (1997) criteria and adapted to Brazilian surveys. Results In total, 8.61% …

Demographic profile of oral nonodontogenic cysts in a Brazilian population

2013

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the clinical and demographic characteristics of oral non- odontogenic cysts (ONOC) in a Brazilian population over a 53-year period and to compare this data with the literature. Study D esign: A total of 20.391 biopsies records were evaluated, from April/1959 to August/2012. Cases of oral developmental cysts were selected. Data regarding age, gender, time of evolution, and anatomic site of all cases were collected. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Among 20.391 oral biopsies, 71 (0.35%) met the criteria of ONOC. Females accounted for 50.70% of all cases. The mean age observed was 38.14 years (range: 5-88 years). …
