Photomodulation of Two-Dimensional Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene-Azobenzene Triads

2019

International audience; Achieving exquisite control over self-assembly of functional polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nanographene (NG) is essential for their exploitation as active elements in (nano)technological applications. In the framework of our effort to leverage their functional complexity, we designed and synthesized two hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) triads, pAHA and oAHA, decorated with two light-responsive azobenzene moieties at the pseudo-para and ortho positions, respectively. Their photoisomerization in solution is demonstrated by UV–vis absorption. 1H NMR measurements of oAHA suggested 23% of Z-form can be obtained at a photostationary state with UV irradiation …

Thermo- and Light-Responsive Polymers Containing Photoswitchable Azobenzene End Groups

2009

Telechelic thermo- and light-responsive polymers based on poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) P(OEGMA) with azobenzene functionalities at the end groups were synthesized. In a reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using a functionalized chain transfer agent (CTA) containing a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) activated ester, oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA, Mn ∼ 300 g mol−1) could successfully be polymerized with good control over molecular weight, very high conversions, and narrow molecular weight distributions. Polymers derived from this CTA possessed an activated ester at the α-end of the polymer chain as well as a dithio…

Synthesis and characterization of chiral azobenzene dye functionalized Janus dendrimers

2008

Abstract Eight bischromophoric bisMPA based polyester Janus dendrimers emanating from a pentaerythritol core were synthesized and their properties evaluated. 4-((4-(Ethyl(2-(2-(6-methoxynaphthalen-2-yl)propanoyloxy)ethyl)amino)-phenyl)diazenyl)-benzoic acid and 4-((4-(ethyl(2-(2-(6-methoxynaphthalen-2-yl)propanoyloxy)-ethyl)-amino)phenyl)diazenyl)-3-nitrobenzoic acid were attached to the dendritic polyester skeleton to make chiral dendrimers up to the second generation. The structures and the purity of the molecules were verified with 1H NMR, 13C NMR, ESI TOF mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. Spectral properties were evaluated with UV–vis and CD spectrometer. The compounds displaye…

Assembly and dichroism of a four-component halogen-bonded metal-organic cocrystal salt solvate involving dicyanoaurate(I) acceptors

2017

We describe the use of dicyanoaurate ions as linear ditopic metal–organic acceptors for the halogen bond-driven assembly of a dichroic metal–organic cocrystal based on azobenzene chromophores. Structural analysis by single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that the material is a four-component solid, consisting of anticipated anionic metal–organic halogen-bonded chains based on dicyanoaurate ions, as well as complex potassium-based cations and discrete molecules of the crown ether 15-crown-5. Importantly, the structural analysis revealed the parallel alignment of the halogen-bonded chains required for dichroic behaviour, confirming that crystal engineering principles developed for the desi…

Optical data storage in Langmuir-Blodgett-Kuhn multilayer assemblies of azo-dye side chain LC-polymers

1991

We describe the preparation of LB-films of novel polymers containing azobenzene dye side chains. X-ray refection measurements, surface-plasmon experiments were used to determine the structure of LB-films which had been transferred onto a substrate. Illumination with UV-light causes trans-cis isomerisation of the azobenzene side groups. This effect can be used for optical data storage and will be discussed in detail.

Temperature and light sensitive copolymers containing azobenzene moieties prepared via a polymer analogous reaction

2009

Abstract Four different series of polyacrylamides containing different amounts of azobenzene moieties have been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenylacrylate) (PPFPA). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in aqueous solution, which was dependent on (i) the amount of incorporated chromophoric azobenzene groups and (ii) the isomerization state of the respective azobenzene group. Higher LCST values were measured for UV-irradiated solutions of the copolymers in comparison to the non-irradiated copolymer solutions. A maximum difference in the LCST of up to 7 °C was found for the copolymer poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide…

PNIPAM Copolymers Containing Light-Responsive Chromophores: A Method Toward Molecular Logic Gates

2010

A series of thermo-responsive PNIPAM copolymers containing different amounts of fulgimide moieties has been synthesized via a polymer analogous reaction of poly(pentafluorophenyl acrylate). All copolymers were designed to exhibit a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) in water, which was only weakly dependent on the amount of incorporated chromophoric fulgimide groups. The copolymers showed a photocyclization of the fulgimide side groups upon irradiation with UV-light accompanied with a color change. The closed form of the chromophore had a halftime of 136 min for the visible reisomerization and did not affect the LCST of the polymer. This led to the realization of a logic "NOT A" for…

Thermal, glass-forming, nonlinear optical and holographic properties of "push-pull" type azochromophores with triphenyl moieties containing isophoren…

2013

Molecular organic compounds with electron donating fragment bounded through π-conjugated system with electron acceptor fragment, as well as with incorporated triphenyl groups in their molecules show potential for creating cheap and simple solution processable materials with nonlinear optical properties. Additional insertion of azobenzene fragment in their structures makes them also possible to form holographic volume and surface relief gratings (SRG) after exposure to laser radiation, which could be useful for holographic data storage. For these purposes polymers are generally used. However, their application is complicated and challenging task as in every attempt to obtain the same polymer…

Halogen-bonded photoresponsive materials

2015

The aim of the present review is to illustrate to the reader the state of the art on the construction of supramolecular azobenzene-containing materials formed by halogen bonding. These materials include several examples of polymeric, liquid crystalline or crystalline species whose performances are either superior to the corresponding performances of their hydrogen-bonded analogues or simply distinctive of the halogen-bonded species. submittedVersion Peer reviewed

Photoresponsive ionic liquid crystals assembled: Via halogen bond: En route towards light-controllable ion transporters

2017

We demonstrate that halogen bonding (XB) can offer a novel approach for the construction of photoresponsive ionic liquid crystals. In particular, we assembled two new supramolecular complexes based on 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium iodides and azobenzene derivatives containing an iodotetrafluoro-benzene ring as XB donor, where the iodide anion acted as an XB acceptor. DSC and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the preferred stoichiometry between the XB donors and acceptors is 2 : 1, and that the iodide anions act as bidentate XB-acceptors, binding two azobenzene derivatives. Due to the high directionality of the XB, calamitic superanions are obtained, while the segregation occurring betw…
