Ionic liquids gels: Soft materials for environmental remediation
2017
Abstract Hypothesis Nanostructured sorbents and, in particular, supramolecular gels are emerging as efficient materials for the removal of toxic contaminants from water, like industrial dyes. It is also known that ionic liquids can dissolve significant amounts of dyes. Consequently, supramolecular ionic liquids gels could be highly efficient sorbents for dyes removal. This would also contribute to overcome the drawbacks associated with dye removal by liquid–liquid extraction with neat ionic liquids which would require large volumes of extractant and a more difficult separation of the phases. Experiments Herein we employed novel supramolecular ionic liquid gels based on diimidazolium salts b…
Imidazolium-Functionalized Carbon Nanohorns for the Conversion of Carbon Dioxide
2016
Six new hybrid materials composed of carbon nanohorns (CNHs) and highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were easily synthesized using a one-step procedure based on the radical oligomerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts (bVImiX) in the presence of pristine CNHs. The hybrid materials were characterized and employed as the sole catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide into cyclic carbonate by reaction with epoxides. The solids displayed excellent turnover number and productivity. Moreover, four catalysts were investigated in recycling experiments. Two catalysts containing an octyl linker between the imidazolium units and a bromide or an iodide anion showed no loss in activity after thr…
Cytotoxic effects of mycotoxin combinations in mammalian kidney cells
2011
The cytotoxicity of three Fusarium mycotoxins (beauvericin, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin) has been investigated using the NR assay, after 24, 48 and 72h of incubation. The IC(50) values ranged from 6.77 to 11.08, 3.30 to 10.00 and 0.004 to 0.005 for beauvericin, deoxynivalenol and T-2 toxin, respectively. Once the potential interaction has been detected, a quantitative assessment is necessary to ensure and characterize these interactions, that is, each mycotoxin contributes to the toxic effect in accord with its own potency. Combination of mycotoxins was determined in Vero cells after 24, 48 and 72h of exposure. Isobolograms and median effect method of Chou and Talalay were used to assess t…
As2O3-induced oxidative stress and cycle progression in a human intestinal epithelial cell line (Caco-2)
2007
Foods and drinking water are the main routes for human exposure to inorganic arsenic, the intestinal epithelium being the first barrier against such exogenous toxicants. The present study evaluates the effect of As(III) (0.5-25 microM) upon Caco-2 cells as an intestinal epithelia model. Cell viability, intracellular formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane potential (Deltapsim) changes, and cell cycle distribution in exposed cultures were evaluated. The intracellular production of ROS was seen to increase in a non-dose dependent manner at all concentrations tested, with impairment of cell mitochondrial enzyme function secondary to a loss of Deltapsim. Concentration…
The Gelling Ability of Some Diimidazolium Salts: Effect of Isomeric Substitution of the Cation and Anion
2013
The gelling ability of some geminal imidazolium salts was investigated both in organic solvents and in water solution. Organic salts differing either in the cation or anion structure were taken into account. In particular, the effects on the gel-phase formation of isomeric substitution on the cation or anion as well as of the use of mono- or dianions were evaluated. As far as the cation structure is concerned, isomeric cations, such as 3,3′-di-n-octyl-1,1′-(1,4-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium and 3,3′-di-n-octyl-1,1′-(1,3-phenylenedimethylene)diimidazolium, were used. On the other hand, in addition to the bromide anion, isomeric dianions, such as the 1,5- and 2,6-naphthalenedisulfonate a…
Insights into the anion effect on the self assembly of perylene bisimide diimidazolium salts
2017
Abstract We studied how changing the anion affects the self-assembly of three diimidazolium salts bearing a perylene bisimide spacer. In particular we used [BF 4 − ] and [NTf 2 − ] based salts together with a mixed salt bearing both [I − ] and [BF 4 − ] anions. Thermal as well as concentration and temperature dependent spectroscopic investigations revealed that changing the anion impacts on solid state and solution aggregation, leading to articulate thermotropic behaviors and contrasting solvent effects, respectively. We also studied the electrochemical behavior of the salts to verify if changing the anion alters the redox properties of the salts. Finally, different anions also lead to very…
Thiazolium-‐based catalysts for the etherification of benzylic alcohols under solvent-free conditions
2015
In this work, thiazolium and imidazolium hybrid materials (SBA-15-Thia and SBA-15-Imi) were prepared by grafting the bis-vinylthiazolium or imidazolium salts onto thiol functionalized SBA-15 mesostructured silica. The catalytic activity was tested for the etherification of 1-phenylethanol, in heterogeneous conditions. The reactions were performed under different gas phases and reaction times. The SBA-15-Thia displayed an excellent catalytic performance, also with others benzyl alcohols. This material was successfully used in seven consecutive runs. Further studies were carried out in homogenous conditions. The results obtained allow proving that oxygen play an active role in the reaction pr…
