Microbiological and safety evaluation of green table olives marketed in Italy
2011
The microbiological and safety conditions of green table olives sold on the Italian market were evaluated on 40 samples, 20 loose and 20 packed in containers, purchased at street markets and supermarkets. The olives were analyzed for microflora and food safety indices, and for aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A occurrence, and the results showed acceptable security. There was wide heterogeneity in the microflora, the numerical values being in relation to the olive type. The microbial population was dominated by the yeasts and lactic bacteria responsible for the fermentation process, and their numbers, together with the metabolic activity, led to conditions unfavorable for the development of path…
Potential Health Risk Associated with Mycotoxins in Oat Grains Consumed in Spain
2021
Spain is a relevant producer of oats (Avena sativa), but to date there has been no study on the occurrence/co-occurrence of mycotoxins in oats marketed in Spain. The present study is addressed to overcome this lack of knowledge. One hundred oat kernel samples were acquired across different Spanish geographic regions during the years 2015–2019 and analyzed for mycotoxin content using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC–ESI–MS/MS) method and matrix-matched calibration. The focus was on the regulated mycotoxins although other relevant mycotoxins were considered. The percentage of incidence (levels ≥ limit of detection), mean an…

Prediction of paclitaxel resistance in breast cancer: is CYP1B1*3 a new factor of influence?
2008
This article focuses on the recent findings by Marsh and colleagues, and also discusses recent findings with regards to breast cancer. Taxanes are amongst the most active agents in the treatment of breast cancer. However, many tumors are intrinsically resistant. Therefore, it would be an enormous progress, if factors could be identified that reliably differentiate between taxane-sensitive and -resistant patients. Marsh and colleagues analyzed the CYP1B1*3 (Val432Leu) polymorphism in patients with high-risk stage III and IV breast cancer, who received dose-intense paclitaxel in combination with doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide. They report for the first time that patients with two leucine al…
Evaluation of CYP17A1 and CYP1B1 polymorphisms in male breast cancer risk
2019
Breast cancer in men is a rare and still poorly characterized disease. Inherited mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 genes, as well as common polymorphisms, play a role in male breast cancer genetic predisposition. Male breast cancer is considered a hormone-dependent tumor specifically related to hyperestrogenism. Polymorphisms in genes involved in estrogen biosynthesis and metabolism pathways, such as CYP17A1 and CYP1B1, have been associated with breast cancer risk. Here, we aimed to investigate the role of CYP17A1 and CYP1B1 polymorphisms in male breast cancer risk. A series of 597 male breast cancer cases and 1022 male controls, recruited within the Italian Multicenter Study on male brea…
The yeast inositol monophosphatase is a lithium- and sodium-sensitive enzyme encoded by a non-essential gene pair
1999
Inositol monophosphatases (IMPases) are lithium-sensitive enzymes that participate in the inositol cycle of calcium signalling and in inositol biosynthesis. Two open reading frames (YHR046c and YDR287w) with homology to animal and plant IMPases are present in the yeast genome. The two recombinant purified proteins were shown to catalyse inositol-1-phosphate hydrolysis sensitive to lithium and sodium. A double gene disruption had no apparent growth defect and was not auxotroph for inositol. Therefore, lithium effects in yeast cannot be explained by inhibition of IMPases and inositol depletion, as suggested for animal systems. Overexpression of yeast IMPases increased lithium and sodium toler…
2009
In the present text, I’ll dwell upon the tensions or contradictions in the philosophy of Schopenhauer, and I’ll try to understand them instead of accusing the philosopher of irrationality or inconsequence. The first part of the text investigates Schopenhauer’s theory of knowledge under the aspects of difference and passage, and the second part investigates the liason between etchis and aesthetics searching for an answer for the question of the present identity in the determination of compassion as an expression of the knowledge of the unity of the will.
Comprehensive three‐dimensional morphology of neoangiogenesis in pulmonary veno‐occlusive disease and pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis
2019
Abstract Pulmonary veno‐occlusive disease (PVOD) is a rare lung disease characterized by fibrotic narrowing of pulmonary veins leading to pulmonary hypertension (PH) and finally to death by right heart failure. PVOD is often accompanied by pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis (PCH), a marked abnormal proliferation of pulmonary capillaries. Both morphological patterns often occur together and are thought to be distinct manifestations of the same disease process and accordingly are classified together in group 1′ of the Nice classification of PH. The underlying mechanisms of these aberrant remodeling processes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the three‐dimensional struc…
