Precambrian Banded Iron Formation (BIF) deposition was conventionally attributed to the precipitation of iron-oxides resulting from the abiotic reaction of ferrous iron (Fe(II)) with photosynthetically produced oxygen. Earliest traces of oxygen date from 2.7 Ga, thus raising questions as to what may have caused BIF precipitation before oxygenic photosynthesis evolved. Characterization of a complex rearrangement involving chromosomes 1, 4 and 8 by fish and array-CGH

Complex chromosomal rearrangements (CCRs) are structural aberrations involving more than two chromosomes with at least three breakpoints. CCRs can be divided into familial and de novo. Balanced CCR are extremely rare in humans and are at high risk of producing unbalanced gametes. Microscope system with on axis programmable Fourier transform filtering

Abstract We propose an on-axis microscope optical system to implement programmable optical Fourier transform image processing operations, taking advantage of phase and polarization modulation of a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) display. We use a Hamamatsu spatial light modulator (SLM), free of flickering, which therefore can be tuned to fully eliminate the zero order component of the encoded diffractive filter. This allows the realization of filtering operation on axis (as opposed to other systems in the literature that require operating off axis), therefore making use of the full space bandwidth provided by the SLM. Investigations of the emission properties of single CdS-nanocrystallites

Semiconductor nanocrystallites (NCs) with a radius in the range of the bulk exciton radius exhibit a strong quantum size effect. We investigated CdS-NCs, that were spin coated on a glass cover slip, with a low temperature confocal microscope. At low coverage we could image the fluorescence light from single NCs. The typical emission spectra of single NCs show four peaks. Besides the main peak related to near bandgap recombination, up to two LO-phonon satellites and one blue shifted peak were observed. Chalcogenide glass hollow core photonic crystal fibers

International audience; We report the first hollow core photonic crystal fibers (HC PCF) in chalcogenide glass. To design the required HC PCF profiles for such high index glass, we use both band diagram analysis to define the required photonic bandgap and numerical simulations of finite size HC PCFs to compute the guiding losses. The material losses have also been taken into account to compute the overall losses of the HC PCF profiles. These fibers were fabricated by the stack and draw technique from Te20As30Se50 (TAS) glass. We study how diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measured toward distance-distributed target stars can be used to locate dense interstellar (IS) clouds in the Galaxy and probe a line-of-sight (LOS) kinematical structure, a potential useful tool when gaseous absorption lines are saturated or not available in the spectral range. Cool target stars are numerous enough for this purpose. We have devised automated DIB fitting methods appropriate to cool star spectra and multiple IS components. The data is fitted with a combination of a synthetic stellar spectrum, a synthetic telluric transmission, and empirical DIB profiles. Modelling Mobile Encounter Networks

This article presents mobile encounter networks, which emerge when mobile devices come across each other and form a temporary connection between them using a common short-range radio technology. Local information exchanges between mobile devices results in a broadcast diffusion of information to other users of the network with a delay. A Delay-Centric Dynamic Resource Allocation Algorithm for Wireless Communication Systems Based on HNN

This paper proposes a dynamic resource-allocation (DRA) algorithm for packet data services in wireless communication systems based on Hopfleld neural networks (HNNs). The resource-allocation algorithm assumes a delay-centric approach in that it maximizes resource utilization of the overall system while minimizing the packet delay.
