Music in the Dark: Soundscapes in Christiane Ritter’s A Woman in The Polar Night

2020

In A Woman in the Polar Night (Eine Frau erlebt die Polarnacht, 1938), Christiane Ritter, a well-to-do Austrian housewife, describes her experience as the first central European woman to overwinter on Svalbard (1934–35). Ritter’s prose is extraordinary in its lyrical simplicity, and in German editions the text is interspersed with her paintings of the scenes that at first were so alien and changing, yet became so familiar and loved.
Although stationed on the north coast of Svalbard with minimal human contact and without any recourse to the music with which Ritter had been surrounded in Austria, A Woman in the Polar Night is a text that is full of references to sound, natural sounds th…

2002

Titanium oxinitride thin films, TiNxOy, were elaborated on Si(100) by the MOCVD (Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition) method, using titanium isopropoxide Ti(OCH(CH3)2)4 and ammonia NH3 as precursors. By varying the growth temperature, it is possible to modify the N/O ratio and change the conductivity of the films. The target of this work was to determine the composition and the structure of these TiNxOy thin films in order to understand the electrical properties. However, this study was difficult because classical characterization techniques (SEM, XRD, Raman, XPS...) were unable to describe the whole TiNxOy system. Indeed, only a structure which is isomorphic to TiN (NaCl structure) was …

Flat bands, Dirac cones, and atom dynamics in an optical lattice

2010

We study atoms trapped with a harmonic confinement in an optical lattice characterized by a flat band and Dirac cones. We show that such an optical lattice can be constructed which can be accurately described with the tight binding or Hubbard models. In the case of fermions the release of the harmonic confinement removes fast atoms occupying the Dirac cones while those occupying the flat band remain immobile. Using exact diagonalization and dynamics we demonstrate that a similar strong occupation of the flat band does not happen in bosonic case and furthermore that the mean field model is not capable for describing the dynamics of the boson cloud.

Quantum effects in one-dimensional optical flat-band lattices

2011

I numerically simulated one-dimensional lattice systems describable by the Hubbard-model and containing a flat-band. I studied the manner in which particles initially held in place by a parabolic confinement potential are dispersed across the lattice after the potential is removed. I also studied currents flowing within one-dimensional Hubbard-rings. In both of these cases I observed that the flat dispersion relation of the flat-band manifests itself as the immobility of the particles occupying it. Particles occupying flat-band states do not disperse even after the removal of any external confinement, neither do they contribute to a current within a ring.

A reappraisal of the purported gastric pellet with Pterosaurian bones from the Upper Triassic of Italy

2015

A small accumulation of bones from the Norian (Upper Triassic) of the Seazza Brook Valley (Carnic Prealps, Northern Italy) was originally (1989) identified as a gastric pellet made of pterosaur skeletal elements. The specimen has been reported in literature as one of the very few cases of gastric ejecta containing pterosaur bones since then. However, the detailed analysis of the bones preserved in the pellet, their study by X-ray microCT, and the comparison with those of basal pterosaurs do not support a referral to the Pterosauria. Comparison with the osteology of a large sample of Middle-Late Triassic reptiles shows some affinity with the protorosaurians, mainly with Langobardisaurus pand…

Letture gramsciane di Giuseppe Lombardo Radice (I parte)

2011

In Gramsci’s intellectual development is not a place on the periphery is occupied by the figure of Lombrado Root. Prominent character of pedagogy idealism and importer in Italy, activist of instances (even American), socialist “romantic, sentimental, unscientific.” Lombardo Radice was a careful student of the drama of the South and Gramsci was always very interested in the work of the Sicilian and there are many similarities (apparent) between the two intellectuals: 1) the focus on popular culture, 2) the combination between educational and political problems, and 3) the reference to the figure of Leonardo and other similarities yet. The author has done a thorough research work and signific…
