Electrochemical identification of painters/workshops: The case of Valencian Renaissance-Baroque painters (ca. 1550- ca. 1670)
2019
[EN] The voltammetry of immobilized particles (VIMP) methodology was applied to discriminate the oil painting production of a series of seven painters/workshops that worked in Valencia (Spain) between ca. 1530 and ca. 1650. When submicrosamples used for cross-section FESEM/EDX analysis were attached to graphite electrodes in contact with aqueous acetate buffer, well-defined responses were obtained. The reductive processes of lead pigments (lead white and lead-tin yellow) overlapped those associated to the lead soaps and other species resulting from the pigment-oil binder interaction in the sample. Such responses, which are theoretically modeled, were sensitive to changes in paint type and d…
Bocángel?s Silva «El Retrato» : A Textual Trojan Horse?
2020
ABSTRACT: Gabriel Bocángel’s silva «El retrato» (c. 1638) is a textual Trojan horse in the war for poetic patronage in the early modern Spanish court. Written on the wedding of the poet’s cousin to Juan de Cetina, secretary to the Admiral of Castile, the poem is a verbal portrait of the bride that undermines not only the tradition of the descriptio puellae, but also the Count-Duke of Olivares’s power. As a panegyric of the latter’s enemy, the text employs the botanical images of the laurel and the ivy, exploiting the full sense of their symbolic meaning. As an appeal for the patronage of poetry and letters at court and an exercise in «self-fashioning» (Greenblatt), the text makes the lovers…
2016
ABSTRACT: The first Marquis of Palmerola, Francesc Xavier Despujol, remodelled his family residence in 1784, which included a large hall decorated with a pictorial program painted by Pere Pau Montana. These historical paintings depicted episodes of war and peace, related to the family history of the owners, in order to show the importance and roots of their lineage, highlighting their illustrious role in their country’s history and commerce. This constitutes an outright justification of their power, an ostentatious display of their social status and their loyalty to the crown, following the trend amongst the nobility for building these cases grans during the last third of the eighteenth cen…
Emblemática santa en sepulcros barrocos
2016
ABSTRACT: «Sacred Emblematics on Baroque Sepulchres» is a study of urns and reliquaries for Catalan saints. The symbolic language is applied to the funeral container of sacred content, in the specific cases of St. Olegario, St. Armengol, St. Bernard Calbo and St. Mary of Cervello. With them we can refer to three different ways of presenting the sacred iconography in relation to local saints with incorrupt bodies: by means of emblematic literature, hagiography or decorative or heraldic motifs. KEYWORDS: Sepulchre, Reliquary, Incorrupt Saints, Catalonia, Baroque, Iconography.
2013
ABSTRACT: Frequently but unevenly valued, sor Juana Ines de la Cruz’s (1648-1695) Neptuno alegorico [Allegorical Neptune] has received increased attention in recent years, as though —by virtue of its nature as «ephemeral art»— «that» art (emblematic) had become increasingly more meaningful than the fugacious situation from which it emerged. An exceptional text, the design of the triumphal archway that welcomed the new viceroy Tomas Antonio de la Cerda and his wife Maria Luisa Manrique de Lara in 1680, reveals not only the importance that sor Juana had already attained, to a great extent, as a writer, but also, and more emphatically, it shows the relevance of her public figure and, in a prog…
2013
ABSTRACT: This study aims to offer an interpretation of the possible meanings of the emblematic images and verses of Camoes present in the triumphal arches erected for the royal wedding of Afonso VI and Maria Francisca de Saboia (1666), through the analysis of the epithalamic album entitled Festas que se fizerao pelo Cazamento del Rey D. Affonso VI. Its texts and symbolic watercolors are of great artistic and cultural interest, because they derive their inspiration from the emblem books of the period in order to disseminate political messages that can be read in multiple ways. KEY WORDS: Emblematics, Ephemeral Art, Marriage, Baroque Courts, Camoes RESUMEN: Este estudio pretende realizar una…
2013
ABSTRACT: Iconology , the important book of allegories and attributes compiled by Cesare Ripa in 1593, was a major source for understanding the symbolic art of the culture of the period. Its application affected the visual practice of arts and architecture. In Pajara (Fuerteventura. Canary Islands), there is a temple whose main facade draws on symbols that seem to be influenced by Ripa's work: elements of Nature and zoomorphic, animistic and material representations with a decided spiritual and cosmogonic charge. In the context of Baroque culture, the symbols recorded on the facade proclaim the triumph of the Reformed Church. KEY WORDS: Seventeenth Century Architecture. Iconography. Iconolo…
