Digitālā fotogrāfija – R. Barta redzējums
2015
2012
In the archives of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften two letters by Barthold Georg Niebuhr of September 1816 are preserved which have never been published in a scholarly edition. The present transcription of the text is diplomatical. Furthermore the letters are examinated in their historical context. The use made of these letters in an anonymous publication in the same year in the Allegmeine Literatur-Zeitung is also discussed.
Do Multinationals Deteriorate Developing Countries' Export Prices? The Impact of FDI on Net Barter Terms of Trade
2015
This paper explores the economic relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) to developing countries and the export prices of the latter, measured by terms of trade. It is rst shown that economic theory suggests such a relationship for various reasons but is inconclusive about the direction of the eect. To address this open issue empirically, I analyze data on more than 50 developing countries throughout the period 1980 - 2008 using robust dynamic panel data methods. The results show that FDI had an economically relevant and statistically signicant positive impact on developing countries’ net barter terms of trade. A higher level of education in the developing country fosters this …
Nonlinear dynamics of interest rate and inflation
2004
According to several empirical studies, US inflation and nominal interest rates, as well as the real interest rate, can be described as unit root processes. These results imply that nominal interest rates and expected inflation do not move one-for-one in the long run, which is not consistent with the theoretical models. In this paper we introduce a nonlinear bivariate mixture autoregressive model that seems to fit quarterly US data (1952 Q1 – 2000 Q2) reasonably well. It is found that the three-month treasury bill rate and inflation share a common nonlinear component that explains a large part of their persistence. The real interest rate is devoid of this component, indicating one-for-one m…
Myths of Primitiveness: A Barthean Interpretation of Rhetorical Devices in Early Jazz Criticism
2013
Ever since jazz began to make an impact in white aesthetic culture in the late 1910s and 1920s, critics, regardless of whether they celebrated or condemned the music, enmeshed their discourse with images of exoticism, noble savageness, and racial brutishness. As Jazz Studies emerged as an academic discipline, scholars have shown increasing interest in exposing these images in order to illustrate the pervading racist sentiment inscribed within white perception of the jazz idiom and also to establish the connections between jazz and the modernist obsession with primitivism. The aim of this paper is to contribute further study to the intricacies of primitivism through a close examination of th…

Szkic biograficzny do historii polskich losów XIX i XX wieku
2020
The article was inspired by the biography of Zofia Kossak-Szczucka. The rich life of Zofia Kossak was full of extraordinary situations and twists and turns, but above all, her life was characterized by a constant journey. The road from one end of Europe – Ukraine, to the other – the British Isles. Her story became a pretext for presenting the path that two other Poles traveled from the eastern ends of Europe towards its heart and western borders. The first of them was known, although widely, but only from one chapter of the biography – Gabriel Narutowicz. An extremely interesting figure, who came to Switzerland from Lithuania for health reasons in the mid-1880s. He has found his new home in…
