Primary de novo intraosseous carcinoma : report of a new case

2010

Primary de novo intraosseous carcinoma of the jaws has been rarely reported. We present a new case of this unusual tumour and discuss its histopathological and clinical aspects. The subject was a 76-year-old man who was seen due to complaints of pain and the presence of gingival changes in the left mandible. A panoramic radiograph and computed tomography revealed a large mandibular radiolucency. A segmentary mandibulectomy was performed and histopathologic examination proved that the tumour was an intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma. Surgeons should appreciate the aggressiveness of this tumour, despite adequate surgical treatment

Basal ganglia calcifications and ALS syndrome.

1994

We report the case of a patient with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism and unusually large symmetrical calcifications in the basal ganglia, thalami, cerebellar hemispheres and brainstem, who clinically presented an ALS-like syndrome. We discuss the possible role of abnormal calcium metabolism in the pathogenesis of motoneuron disease.

Suitability of the isolated perfused rat brain for studying effects on cerebral metabolism

1972

The concentrations of P-creatine, creatine, ATP, ADP, AMP, glycogen, glucose, glucose-6-P, fructose diphosphate, dihydroxyacetone-P, α-glycero-P, lactate and pyruvate were measured in the isolated perfused rat brain as well as in rat brain in vivo. Similar levels were observed in the isolated brain and in intact animals, and the values measured were in good accordance with those described in the literature. Only the pyruvate and lactate content were significantly higher in the isolated brain but the lactate/pyruvate ratio remained unchanged. An anesthetic or ischemia caused just the same effects on energy metabolism of the isolated rat brain as described for intact animals. Thus, 1.5 mM phe…

Aerobic fitness, energy balance, and body mass index are associated with training load assessed by activity energy expenditure

2009

The present study examined whether activity energy expenditure related to body mass (AEE/kg) is associated with maximal aerobic fitness (VO(2max)), energy balance, and body mass index (BMI) during the 2 hardest weeks of the military basic training season (BT). An additional purpose was to study the accuracy of the pre-filled food diary energy intake. Energy expenditure (EE) with doubly labeled water, energy intake (EI), energy balance, and mis-recording was measured from 24 male conscripts with varying VO(2max). AEE/kg was calculated as (EE x 0.9-measured basal metabolic rate)/body mass. The reported EI was lower (P<0.001) than EE (15.48 MJ/day) and mis-recording of the pre-filled diary …

Effects of heavy resistance/power training on maximal strength, muscle morphology, and hormonal response patterns in 60-75-year-old men and women.

2002

Eleven women (TRW; 64 ± 4 yrs) and ten men (TRM; 65 ± 5 yrs) participated in the strength/power training twice a week for 24 weeks. Basal concentrations of serum total and free testosterone, growth hormone (GH), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), cortisol and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) as well as acute responses of serum total and free testosterone, growth hormone (GH) were measured. Maximal 1RM strength in the squat, chair rise time and muscle fibre distribution and areas of type I and IIa and IIb of the vastus lateralis were also examined. 1RM squat increased in TRW by 26 (SDIO) % (p < .001), and in TRM by 35(7) % (p < .001) and chair rise time improved in both groups…

Distribution of basal-expressed c-fos-like immunoreactive cells of the periaqueductal grey matter of the rat.

1996

The distribution of c-fos proto-oncogene expression has been studied in the periaqueductal grey matter (PAG) of non-intentional-stimulated rats by immunohistochemistry. A mean number of 53 +/- 9 Fos-like immunoreactive cells per hemiPAG, distributed into three groups, dorsolateral, lateral and ventrolateral, was found. The dorsolateral and the lateral groups appeared along the entire rostrocaudal PAG, whereas the ventrolateral group appeared only in the caudal half. These results reveal new data on the number and extent of the longitudinal columns within the hypothetical organization of the PAG. They also indicate a continuous activation of a significant population of neurones in the PAG, i…

Human papillomavirus in saliva of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma.

2008

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in saliva rinses of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)and to analyze the possibility of using saliva as a diagnostic method for screening high-risk patients. Study design: The saliva sample of 22 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma and 20 age-sex matched healthy controls were obtained. The presence of HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, and 33 was evaluated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: In 40.9% of the patients and in 25% of the controls, the saliva was shown to be positive for HPV. In 27.3% of the patients and in 20% of the controls, the saliva was shown to be positive for HP…

Evening salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase at 14months and neurodevelopment at 4years: Sex differences.

2017

Stress system activity in early life can have long-term effects on neurodevelopment. The main aim of this study was to assess the association of child evening salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase basal levels at 14months of age with longer-term neuropsychological development at 4years in a low-risk population-based birth cohort derived from the INMA (Environment and Childhood) project in Spain. We included 186 parent-children pairs with information on both stress system activity and neurodevelopment. Both stress markers at 14months of age showed an association with neuropsychological development at 4years. Salivary cortisol showed a sex-specific pattern of association. In girls, cortisol lev…

Composite graft: a simple option for nasal lining.

2007

Background  We present our experience in the reconstruction of full-thickness losses of the substance of the nose using a forehead flap and a composite graft (taken from the anterior surface of the concha and adequately shaped) as both support and endonasal lining. This technique has never been described for the reconstruction of large full-thickness losses of the substance of the nose. The donor site of the composite graft in the concha is repaired by a Masson retroauricular flap. Methods  This technique was used on 14 patients (age range, 52–92 years) after full-thickness excision of tumors of the distal third of the nose. Follow-up was from 1 to 4 years. All the composite grafts were rev…

Vascular Anatomy of the Supraclavicular Area Revisited: Feasibility of the Free Supraclavicular Perforator Flap

2008

Vascular anatomy of the supraclavicular area revisited: feasibility of the free supraclavicular perforator flap. Cordova A, Pirrello R, D'Arpa S, Jeschke J, Brenner E, Moschella F. Source Cattedra di Chirurgia Plastica e Ricostruttiva, Dipartimento di Discipline Chirurgiche ed Oncologiche, Università degli Studi di Palermo, Palermo, Italy. adriana.cordova.unipa@gmail.com Abstract BACKGROUND: The supraclavicular skin has been studied extensively and used as a pedicled flap for face and neck reconstruction. Its use as a free flap has not paralleled its use as a pedicled flap. The authors performed an anatomical investigation to assess the possibility of harvesting a free supraclavicular flap …
