Egg parasitoid attraction toward induced plant volatiles is disrupted by a non-host herbivore attacking above or belowground plant organs.
2014
Plants respond to insect oviposition by emission of oviposition-induced plant volatiles (OIPVs) which can recruit egg parasitoids of the attacking herbivore. To date, studies demonstrating egg parasitoid attraction to OIPVs have been carried out in tritrophic systems consisting of one species each of plant, herbivore host, and the associated egg parasitoid. Less attention has been given to plants experiencing multiple attacks by host and non-host herbivores that potentially could interfere with the recruitment of egg parasitoids as a result of modifications to the OIPV blend. Egg parasitoid attraction could also be influenced by the temporal dynamics of multiple infestations, when the same …
Intraguild interactions between egg parasitoids: window of opportunity and fitness costs for a facultative hyperparasitoid.
2013
We investigated intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids of Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) and Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae), as the former has the potential to be a facultative hyperparasitoid of the latter. We assessed the suitability of N. viridula eggs for the development of O. telenomicida as a function of egg age when they were unparasitized, or had been attacked by T. basalis at different times prior to exposure to O. telenomicida females. Ooencyrtus telenomicida can exploit healthy N. viridula host eggs up to 5 days of age, just prior to the emergence of N. viri…
Intraguild interactions between two egg parasitoids of a true bug in semi-field and field conditions.
2014
International audience; Research on interspecific competitive interactions among insect parasitoids has often been characterized by laboratory studies in which host insects are exposed to female parasitoids of different species in various sequences and combinations. In the last years, an increasing number of studies have investigated interspecific interactions under field and semi-field conditions although just a few number of works focused on egg parasitoids. In this work, we undertook a two-year study to investigate interspecific interactions between Trissolcus basalis (Wollaston) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) and Ooencyrtus telenomicida (Vassiliev) (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), two egg para…
Serotonin modulation of the basal ganglia circuitry: therapeutic implication for Parkinson's disease and other motor disorders
2008
Several recent studies have emphasized a crucial role for the interactions between serotonergic and dopaminergic systems in movement control and the pathophysiology of basal ganglia. These observations are supported by anatomical evidence demonstrating large serotonergic innervation of all the basal ganglia nuclei. In fact, serotonergic terminals have been reported to make synaptic contacts with both substantia nigra dopamine-containing neurons and their terminal areas such as the striatum, the globus pallidus and the subthalamus. These brain areas contain a high concentration of serotonin (5-HT), with the substantia nigra pars reticulata receiving the greatest input. In this chapter, the d…
Prediction error signal correlates with fluid intelligenceand dopamine synthesis across the lifespan
2011
IntroductionFluid intelligence expresses the capacity for interpretation of novel stimuli and flexible behavioral adaptation to such cues. Phasic dopamine firing closely matches a temporal difference prediction error (PE) signal important for learning and rapid behavioral adaptation. Both fluid intelligence and dopaminergic neurotransmission decline with age. So far, no study investigated the relationship between fluid IQ, PE signal and direct measures of dopaminergic neurotransmission. Here we used a multimodal imaging approach that combines positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging.MethodsA group of healthy controls was investigated with both 6-[18F]FluoroDOPA…
Renal cancer surgery in the elderly.
2009
Renal cell carcinoma mainly develops in the sixth or seventh decade of life. As life expectancy increases, urologists have to deal with elderly patients presenting with renal cancer. The introduction of ablative techniques has even widened our armamentarium of treating elderly patients with renal cancer apart from the standard laparoscopic and open surgical procedures. Our review highlights the current literature focusing on the functional and oncological outcome of surgically treated renal cancer in elderly patients.Despite the higher percentage of comorbidities, perioperative morbidity and declined renal reserve in elderly patients, radical or partial nephrectomy being performed open or l…
Changes of Angiotensin Converting Enzyme (Ace) Levels During Activation of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAs)
1987
The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of ACE levels during RAAs activation induced by: 1) a continuous graded bicycle ergometer test performed in a group of 15 males health youths aged between 21 and 30 years, with average age of 25.8 +/- 2.85 years; 2) i.m. injection of 20 mg of frusemide in 11 health youths (10 males and 1 female), aged between 20 and 30 years, with average age of 24.09 +/- 2.77 years; 3) dialytic treatment in 25 patients (12 males and 13 females), suffering from chronic renal failure, aged between 26 and 68 years, with average age of 54 +/- 15.42 years. Plasmatic renin activity (PRA), aldosterone (ALD) and ACE levels were determined by RIA in basal conditions…
Effects of time of day on resistance exercise-induced anabolic signaling in skeletal muscle
2013
This study examined the effect of morning versus afternoon exercise on acute responses in phosphorylation of proteins regulating muscle size and metabolism. Twenty-two untrained men, divided into the morning (n = 11) or afternoon (n = 11) group, performed maximal isometric leg extensions before and after resistance loading at 07:30–08:30 h and 16:00–17:00 h, respectively. Muscle pre- and postloading biopsies were analyzed for phosphorylated Akt, p70S6K, rpS6, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), Erk1/2, and eukaryotic elongation factor (eEF) 2. Muscle force declined after exercise in both groups (p < 0.001). p70S6K Thr389 (p < 0.05) and Thr421/Ser424 and rpS6 (all p < 0.001) increas…
Correlation between basal bilirubin levels and survival in advanced colorectal carcinoma treated with CPT-11-based chemotherapy: A study of the Grupp…
2008
AbstractBackgroundThis study was carried out to evaluate total basal bilirubin levels as a predictive factor for survival and toxicity in patients with advanced colorectal carcinoma treated with CTP-11-based regimens.Patients and methodsThe analysis was carried out on a data base including 287 patients affected by advanced colorectal carcinoma all treated with CPT-11 plus bolus and continuous venous infusion intravenous folinic acid and 5-fluorouracil on a biweekly schedule (FOLFIRI regimen). Patients were divided into four groups according to basal bilirubin levels as follows: 0.50 and 1.00 and 1.50mg/dl. Analysis of overall median survival and time-to-progression were correlated to perfor…
Computerized analysis of normal fetal heart rate pattern throughout gestation.
2009
Objective To analyze the evolution of computerized cardiotocography (cCTG) parameters throughout gestation in a large archive of traces from healthy fetuses. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of the first cCTG record from 4412 singleton fetuses with good pregnancy outcome. Normal ranges of cCTG parameters for 25 to 42 weeks were derived from analysis of only one cCTG record per fetus, and the relationship between the parameters and gestational age was investigated. Results Fetal heart rate (FHR) accelerations, short- and long-term variation overall, duration of episodes of high and low variation and variation in high episodes increased with advancing gestation. In contrast, maternal …
