Prospective analysis of infectious disease surveillance data using syndromic information.

In this paper, we describe a Bayesian hierarchical Poisson model for the prospective analysis of data for infectious diseases. The proposed model consists of two components. The first component describes the behavior of disease during nonepidemic periods and the second component represents the increase in disease counts due to the presence of an epidemic. A novelty of our model formulation is that the parameters describing the spread of epidemics are allowed to vary in both space and time. We also show how syndromic information can be incorporated into the model to provide a better description of the data and more accurate one-step-ahead forecasts. On 1-Laplacian Elliptic Equations Modeling Magnetic Resonance Image Rician Denoising

Modeling magnitude Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) rician denoising in a Bayesian or generalized Tikhonov framework using Total Variation (TV) leads naturally to the consideration of nonlinear elliptic equations. These involve the so called $1$-Laplacian operator and special care is needed to properly formulate the problem. The rician statistics of the data are introduced through a singular equation with a reaction term defined in terms of modified first order Bessel functions. A computationally fast alternative to cross-validation in penalized Gaussian graphical models

We study the problem of selection of regularization parameter in penalized Gaussian graphical models. When the goal is to obtain the model with good predicting power, cross validation is the gold standard. We present a new estimator of Kullback-Leibler loss in Gaussian Graphical model which provides a computationally fast alternative to cross-validation. The estimator is obtained by approximating leave-one-out-cross validation. Our approach is demonstrated on simulated data sets for various types of graphs. Bayesian models for data missing not at random in health examination surveys

In epidemiological surveys, data missing not at random (MNAR) due to survey nonresponse may potentially lead to a bias in the risk factor estimates. We propose an approach based on Bayesian data augmentation and survival modelling to reduce the nonresponse bias. The approach requires additional information based on follow-up data. We present a case study of smoking prevalence using FINRISK data collected between 1972 and 2007 with a follow-up to the end of 2012 and compare it to other commonly applied missing at random (MAR) imputation approaches. Methods and Tools for Bayesian Variable Selection and Model Averaging in Normal Linear Regression

In this paper, we briefly review the main methodological aspects concerned with the application of the Bayesian approach to model choice and model averaging in the context of variable selection in regression models. This includes prior elicitation, summaries of the posterior distribution and computational strategies. We then examine and compare various publicly available R-packages, summarizing and explaining the differences between packages and giving recommendations for applied users. We find that all packages reviewed (can) lead to very similar results, but there are potentially important differences in flexibility and efficiency of the packages.

Extending conventional priors for testing general hypotheses in linear models

We consider that observations come from a general normal linear model and that it is desirable to test a simplifying null hypothesis about the parameters. We approach this problem from an objective Bayesian, model-selection perspective. Crucial ingredients for this approach are 'proper objective priors' to be used for deriving the Bayes factors. Jeffreys-Zellner-Siow priors have good properties for testing null hypotheses defined by specific values of the parameters in full-rank linear models. Efficient spatial designs using Hausdorff distances and Bayesian optimization

An iterative Bayesian optimisation technique is presented to find spatial designs of data that carry much information. We use the decision theoretic notion of value of information as the design criterion. Gaussian process surrogate models enable fast calculations of expected improvement for a large number of designs, while the full-scale value of information evaluations are only done for the most promising designs.
