Aim of this study was to investigate relationships between the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) and the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (EPN); particularly, the work was focused on the immune response of the insect host in naive larvae and after infection with the EPN. Two main immunological processes have been addressed: the activity and modulation of host prophenoloxidase-phenoloxidase (proPO) system, involved in melanization of not-self and hemocytes recognition processes responsible for not-self encapsulation. Effect of poly(I).poly(C12U) (Ampligen) on enteric virus (rotavirus, poliovirus and Coxsackie B3 virus) infections

The effects of poly(1)-poly(C 12 U) (Ampligen) on infections with enteric viruses (rotavirus, poliovirus and Coxsackie B3 virus) were studied in vitro. Ampligen exhibited antiviral activity against rotavirus, especially when treatment was performed prior to inoculation of the virus. It was partially effective against Coxsackie B3 virus, but not against poliovirus. It is suggested that the observed effects may be due to the production of interferon induced by Ampligen

Los microRNA (miRNAs/miRs) son pequeñas cadenas de ácido ribonucleico (ARN, del inglés RNA) que regulan diferentes procesos biológicos. El objetivo de este estudio consistió en identificar miRNAs alterados en plasma y tejido de pacientes con aneurismas de aorta abdominal (AAA) y explorar nuevas dianas potencialmente involucradas en su desarrollo. Cincuenta y siete sujetos fueron reclutados para el estudio en plasma (30 pacientes con AAA, 16 voluntarios sanos y 11 paciente con arterioesclerosis).
