Bowel obstruction (BO) is a frequent cause of hospitalization and surgical consultation for acute abdominal pain. It is usually suspected at physical examination, but clinical and laboratory data are often nonspecific. Thus, computed tomography plays a crucial role in a correct diagnosis of BO. Indeed, computed tomography can confirm a diagnosis of BO, and identify the location and cause of the obstruction. In this review, the computed tomography appearances of common and uncommon causes of BO and pseudo-obstruction are reviewed.

Abstract Background Pharmacotherapy for peritoneal adhesion prophylaxis has been a focus for intensive research. Previous strategies included intravenous and intraperitoneal application of suitable pharmaceutical agents. However, success of these strategies in humans has been limited. Methods Ten young adult male monozygotic twin pairs (age range 32-36 years) discordant for leisure-time physical activity during the past 3 years were systematically selected from a population-based Finnish twin cohort. The ultrasonically guided nephrotomy technique using B-scanning to identify the localization of stones and Doppler sonography to identify avascular parenchymal areas for nephrotomies allows for transparenchymal stone removal without the need for renal artery clamping and renal cooling. In 175 procedures the average blood loss was 1,350 ml and the rate of residual stones requiring a secondary intervention was 2.8%. Despite the advent of new noninvasive treatment modalities, this technique is still applied in 23% of staghorn stones.
