Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles under high pressure

We report by the first time a high pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles carried out at room temperature up to 17 GPa. In contrast with previous studies of nanoparticles, which proposed the transition pressure to be reduced from 20–27 GPa to 7.5–12.5 GPa (depending on particle size), we found that cobalt ferrite nanoparticles remain in the spinel structure up to the highest pressure covered by our experiments. In addition, we report the pressure dependence of the unit-cell parameter and Raman modes of the studied sample. Engineering of nanoscale structures is a requisite for controlling the electrical and thermal transport in solids, in particular for thermoelectric applications that require a conflicting combination of low thermal conductivity and low electrical resistivity. We report the thermoelectric properties of spark plasma sintered Magnéli phases WO2.90 and WO2.722. The crystallographic shear planes, which are a typical feature of the crystal structures of Magnéli-type metal oxides, lead to a remarkably low thermal conductivity for WO2.90. Manufacturing Te/PEDOT Films for Thermoelectric Applications

In this work, flexible Te films have been synthesized by electrochemical deposition using PEDOT [poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)] nanofilms as working electrodes. The Te electrodeposition time was varied to find the best thermoelectric properties of the Te/PEDOT double layers. To show the high quality of the Te films grown on PEDOT, the samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, showing the three Raman active modes of Te: E1, A1, and E2. The X-ray diffraction spectra also confirmed the presence of crystalline Te on top of the PEDOT films. Minimizing coherent thermal conductance by controlling the periodicity of two-dimensional phononic crystals

Periodic hole array phononic crystals (PnC) can strongly modify the phonon dispersion relations, and have been shown to influence thermal conductance coherently, especially at low temperatures where scattering is suppressed. One very important parameter influencing this effect is the period of the structure. Here, we measured the sub-Kelvin thermal conductance of nanofabricated PnCs with identical hole filling factors, but three different periodicities, 4, 8, and 16 $\mu$m, using superconducting tunnel junction thermometry. Introduction EXCELLENT (NCT03685578) is a prospective, single-arm, multicenter, real-world international registry of mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for stroke with the EmboTrap device as first line treatment. The study entails thrombus analysis of specimens collected with each MT pass. In Situ Characterization of Hfq Bacterial Amyloid: A Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy Study

Hfq is a bacterial protein that regulates gene expression at the post-transcriptional level in Gram-negative bacteria. We have previously shown that Escherichia coli Hfq protein, and more precisely its C-terminal region (CTR), self-assembles into an amyloid-like structure in vitro. In the present work, we present evidence that Hfq unambiguously forms amyloid structures also in vivo. Taking into account the role of this protein in bacterial adaptation and virulence, our work opens possibilities to target Hfq amyloid self-assembly and cell location, with potential to block bacterial adaptation and treat infections. The development of new antifungal agents that target biofilms is an urgent need. Natural products, mainly from the plant kingdom, represent an invaluable source of these entities.
