Humor and Disobedience : Understanding Controversial Humor
2016
In this article, I analyze controversial humor and argue that the concept of disobedience is of central importance when evaluating, for instance, harsh or potentially hurtful jokes. Following social critic Erich Fromm (1900– 1980) I claim that disobedience is a dialectic concept: that is, it includes the possibilities both to affirm and to reject. This observation connects humor to other values, and pivotal is how humor is related to the question of what it means to be a human being. Through this insight, I argue that controversial humor may shock and be offensive, or it can be amusing and even have a cathartic effect. In the end, in evaluating humor it is necessary to analyze the values be…
Smart Wireless Sensor Networks and Biometric Authentication for Real Time Traffic Light Junctions Management
2013
The main challenge of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is to deal with ‘real-time’ information to improve vehicular traffic management. Road data can be processed and used for dynamic traffic light management in order to reduce waiting times in queues. This paper proposes an innovative distributed architecture based on a wireless sensor network (WSN) with a network coordinator providing remote and ubiquitous authentication module for managing unexpected events. The architecture is completed by a dynamic module for street priority management depending on traffic rate. Many experimental trials have been carried out considering three different levels of traffic intensity to prove the e…
Parametric sensitivity of a CFD model concerning the hydrodynamics of trickle-bed reactor (TBR)
2016
Abstract The aim of the present study was to investigate the sensitivity of a multiphase Eulerian CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between phases. The mean relative error as well as standard deviation of experimental and computed values of pressure gradient and average liquid holdup were used as validation criteria of the model. Comparative basis for simulations was our own data-base obtained in experiments carried out in a TBR operating at a co-current downward gas and liquid flow. Estimated errors showed that the classical equations of Attou et al. (1999) defining the friction factors Fjk approximate experimental values of hydrodynamic parameters with the best agre…
On the dynamics of disobedience: experimental investigations of defying unjust authority.
2017
Across six Experimental conditions with university student participants (N=600), we examined some of the dynamics underlying expressed defiance to unjust authority. Results revealed disobedience was best enacted by participants low in right-wing authoritarianism and was more likely to occur when: 1) in physical proximity of other rebels, 2) the authority made two demanding requests instead of one, and 3) there had been an earlier opposition to injustice. Results are discussed within the theoretical framework of bounded rationality.
Att bedöma skriftliga färdigheter i svenska med hjälp av en nivåskala: hur skillnader mellan bedömare uppstår
2011
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, kuinka neljä kokenutta kielitaidon arvioijaa arvioi suomenkielisen yläasteopiskelijan kirjoittaman ruotsinkielisen kirjoitelman käyttäen apunaan Opetushallituksen kielitaidon tasojen kuvausasteikkoa. Tavoitteena on selvittää, missä määrin arvioijat tukeutuvat taitotasoasteikkoon arvioidessaan kirjoitelmaa, millä asteikkoon kuuluvilla tai kuulumattomilla kriteereillä he useimmin perustelevat valintansa sekä miksi arvioijat arvioivat kirjoitelman eri tavoin. Analysoitavaksi kirjoitelmaksi valittiin sellainen, jolle arvioijat määräsivät eri tasoja: kaksi päätyi A2.1:een, yksi A1.3:een ja yksi A2.2:een. Tutkimusmetodina käytettiin puolistrukturoitua teemah…
Cognition Is Not What It Used to Be: Reconsidering Usability From an Embodied Embedded Cognition Perspective
2009
Embodied embedded cognition (EEC) has gained support in cognitive science as well as in human–computer interaction (HCI). EEC can be characterized both by its action-centeredness as well as its roots in phenomenology. The phenomenological aspects of EEC could be seen as support for trends in design emphasizing the user experience. Meanwhile, usability issues often are still approached using traditional methods based on cognitivist assumptions. In this paper, I argue for a renewed focus on improving usability from an EEC perspective. I draw mainly on a behavior-oriented interpretation of the theory, the key aspects of which are reviewed. A tentative sketch for an embodied embedded usability …
Numerical Simulations of the Flow Field of a Submerged Hydraulic Jump over Triangular Macroroughnesses
2021
The submerged hydraulic jump is a sudden change from the supercritical to subcritical flow, specified by strong turbulence, air entrainment and energy loss. Despite recent studies, hydraulic jump characteristics in smooth and rough beds, the turbulence, the mean velocity and the flow patterns in the cavity region of a submerged hydraulic jump in the rough beds, especially in the case of triangular macroroughnesses, are not completely understood. The objective of this paper was to numerically investigate via the FLOW-3D model the effects of triangular macroroughnesses on the characteristics of submerged jump, including the longitudinal profile of streamlines, flow patterns in the cavity regi…
Distance Learning with Hands-on Exercises : Physical Device vs. Simulator
2022
This Research to Practice Full Paper presents a comparison between a physical device and a simulator in a distance learning context. Programming embedded devices is very commonly taught using embedded hardware. One of the most used solutions is the Arduino microcontroller platform, which allows small embedded applications to be built and commanded in a programming language. However, there are some challenges in using physical devices for educational purposes. These challenges are particularly acute in distance learning or when the course needs to be scalable to a varying number of students. To address these challenges, we explored the potential of a simulator as a replacement for a physical…
Conception en technologie CMOS d'un Système de Vision dédié à l'Imagerie Rapide et aux Traitements d'Images
2008
Our work presented in this thesis focuses on the design, testing and implementation of monolithics CMOS image smart sensors : The principle, performance and limitations. The hardware implementation of a vision smart system is the central link. HISIC is High Speed Image Capture with processing at pixel level. An experimental platform for instrumentation and evaluation of retina operators was conducted during this thesis. After a state of the smart sensors and CMOS retinas, the second part is dedicated to the study and design of the pixel image sensor HISIC. Two circuits were realized in CMOS technology. The first identied a new type of photo-detector, and the second, to create a prototype em…
Ontology and protocol secure for SCADA
2014
In this work, we present a semantic cyber security system and we study its semantic intelligent systems vulnerabilities, focusing on the semantic attacks. For resolving semantic problems we propose a security global solution for the new generation of SCADA systems. The proposed solution aims at protecting critical semantic SCADA processes from the effects of major failures and semantic vulnerabilities in the modern IT-SCADA network. We used a security block in the global network access point, security protocols deployed in different network (OSI) levels and security ontologies deployed in security devices. We used our mixed coordinates (ECC) cryptography solution, this is an encryption tech…
