Noninvasive monitoring of polymer curing reactions by dielectrometry

2011

A microwave sensor system for the noninvasive monitoring of the curing process of a thermoset material placed inside a metallic mold is described. The microwave sensor is designed as an open-ended coaxial resonator with a curved surface adapted to the mold inner shape. The analysis of the microwave resonator comprises a recently developed method for deembedding the effect of coupling network in overcoupled resonators, so the range of permitted measurements encompass both low and high dielectric losses of polymeric materials. Results show that noninvasive, continuous monitoring of the microwave dielectric properties of the thermoset material can be performed in real time, allowing one to che…

Persistence of the effects of the covid-19 lockdown on sleep: A longitudinal study

2021

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on sleep have been widely documented, but longitudinal evaluations during different phases of the “COVID-19 era” are needed to disentangle the specific consequences of the r145estrictive measures on sleep variables. The aim of this study was to assess the immediate effect of the lockdown’s end on sleep and sleep-related dimensions in an Italian sample, also considering the stress and depressive symptoms. We used an online survey to longitudinally collect data on sociodemographic, environmental, clinical, sleep, and sleep-related variables in two time points: during and immediately after the lockdown. The final sample included 102 participants. The large …

Breather dynamics in a stochastic sine-Gordon equation: evidence of noise-enhanced stability

2023

The dynamics of sine-Gordon breathers is studied in the presence of dissipative and stochastic perturbations. Taking a stationary breather with a random phase value as the initial state, the performed simulations demonstrate that a spatially-homogeneous noisy source can make the oscillatory excitation more stable, i.e., it enables the latter to last significantly longer than it would in a noise-free scenario. Both the frequency domain and the localization of energy are examined to document the effectiveness of the noise-enhanced stability phenomenon, which emerges as a nonmonotonic behavior of an average characteristic time for the breather as a function of the noise intensity. The influenc…

Solids and Hydraulic Retention Time Effect on N2O Emission from Moving-Bed Membrane Bioreactors

2018

Biological nutrient removal was operated at different solids (SRT) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) in order to assess their influence on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from a hybrid moving-bed membrane bioreactor. The observed results show that the N2O production decreased when the SRT/HRT was decreased. The maximum N2O gaseous concentration was measured in the aerobic reactor at the end of phase I, and it decreased through phases II and III. From mass balances over the reactors of the system, the aerated (aerobic and membrane) reactors were the largest producers of N2O, showing that the greater part of N2O was produced during the nitrification process.

On Spaces of Bochner and Pettis Integrable Functions and Their Set-Valued Counterparts

2011

The aim of this paper is to give a brief summary of the Pettis and Bochner integrals, how they are related, how they are generalized to the set-valued setting and the canonical Banach spaces of bounded maps between Banach spaces that they generate. The main tool that we use to relate the Banach space-valued case to the set-valued case, is the R ̊adstr ̈om embedding theorem.

Relevance of air-to-liquid mass ratio effect on final granule properties of an Enalapril maleate formulation.

2011

In the production of enalapril maleate tablets, the granulation process is the most crucial step. Numerous variables are known to influence the fluid bed granulation process and thus the final granule quality. In this study a novel descriptor for the nozzle parameter "air-to-liquid mass ratio" is presented. Granules manufacturing processes were designed by application of statistical experimental design. The influence of the critical process parameter (CPP)--air-to-liquid mass ratio--on pharmaceutic properties of granules was studied. Air-to-liquid mass ratio can be considered as important variable influencing the droplet size of atomized liquid binder solution.A significant influence of air-…

Der Wärmehaushalt der Atmosphäre

1950

The mean caloric balance of the atmosphere is represented by diagram No. 1, which shows the usual lay-out, but is filled in with new figures according to own calculations based uponS. Fritz's new value of the earth's albedo. Possibilities of exchange between the heat surplus of the earth's surface and the heat deficiency of the atmosphere and between differing spots of the same layer are discussed. Regarding the vertical pattern of heat sources and cold sources, it may be seen that in the humid climates (tropics and temperate zone) the lower troposphere receives considerable amounts of heat and the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere lose heat, while in arid regions (subtropics and the…

Collision-kerma conversion between dose-to-tissue and dose-to-water by photon energy-fluence corrections in low-energy brachytherapy

2016

The AAPM TG-43 brachytherapy dosimetry formalism, introduced in 1995, has become a standard for brachytherapy dosimetry worldwide; it implicitly assumes that charged-particle equilibrium (CPE) exists for the determination of absorbed dose to water at different locations, except in the vicinity of the source capsule. Subsequent dosimetry developments, based on Monte Carlo calculations or analytical solutions of transport equations, do not rely on the CPE assumption and determine directly the dose to different tissues. At the time of relating dose to tissue and dose to water, or vice versa, it is usually assumed that the photon fluence in water and in tissues are practically identical, so tha…

Molecular analysis of lichen-associated bacterial communities

2006

The bacterial communities associated with 11 different lichen samples (belonging to eight different species) from different habitats were investigated. The culturable aerobic-heterotrophic fraction of the bacterial communities was isolated from nine lichen samples on protein-rich and sugar-rich/N-free media. Thirty-four bacterial isolates were purified and pooled into groups (phylotypes) by analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer polymorphism. Twenty five phylotypes were identified, each comprising between one and three isolates. One isolate of each phylotype was partially sequenced and the resulting 16S rRNA gene sequences were compared in a phylogenetic analysis. Three gener…
