Monte Carlo calculation of beam quality correction factors for PTW cylindrical ionization chambers in photon beams.

2020

The beam quality correction factor k Q for megavoltage photon beams has been calculated for eight PTW (Freiburg, Germany) ionization chambers (Farmer chambers PTW30010, PTW30011, PTW30012, and PTW30013, Semiflex 3D chambers PTW31021, PTW31010, and PTW31013, and the PinPoint 3D chamber PTW31016). Simulations performed on the widely used NE-2571 ionization chamber have been used to benchmark the results. The Monte Carlo code PENELOPE/penEasy was used to calculate the absorbed dose to a point in water and the absorbed dose to the active air volume of the chambers for photon beams in the range 4 to 24 MV. Of the nine ionization chambers analysed, only five are included in the current version of…

EMBEDDED STRAIN GAUGES: EFFECT OF THE STRESS NORMAL TO THE GRID

2005

:  In general, a strain gauge embedded in a model is subjected to a stress normal to the grid, whereas a gauge on the external surface is free from such a stress. This paper concerns the effect of the stress normal to the grid on the output of the strain gauge; usually, the influence of such a stress has a negligible effect, however, in some cases a notable influence has been noted. Therefore, the output of the strain gauge is determined in function of the strains in the plane of the gauge, ɛl and ɛt, and of the stress, σn, normal to the grid. The analysis shows that the output of the strain gauge is influenced by the coupled effect of transverse sensitivity and pressure sensitivity of the …

Cluster Embedding Method with Non-orthogonal Wave Functions for Simulation of Nanodevices

2012

Applicability of cluster embedding method with non-orthogonal wave functions for theoretical study of processes in nanodevices has been studied. Processes in nanodevices are treated in the framework of time-dependent DFT. We demonstrate that our cluster embedding method is compatible with DFT Kohn-Sham method and quantum transport theory based on time-dependent DFT. We conclude that the approach for electric current calculation developed for orthogonal wave functions may be applied for non-orthogonal wave functions if we transform the initial equations assuming that overlaps are small (S2 ≪ S).

Local reinforcement effect of embedded strain gauges

2010

The reinforcement effect of strain gauges installed on low Young's modulus materials has received attention by many researchers with respect to both strain gauges installed on the surface [1,2] and embedded inside the material [3,4]. In the case of strain gauges installed on the surface, the evaluation of the local reinforcement effect gives [5] the following correction coefficient C, i.e. the ratio between the actual strain (without the strain gauge) and the strain ' measured by the strain gauge: * ' 1 sg s E C E (1) being * sg g , sg sg sg sg sg sg t L L E E L t t (2) where Esg is the Young’s modulus of the strain gauge, * Esg is a characteristic of the strain gauge which gives the strain…

Comparison and uncertainty evaluation of different calibration protocols and ionization chambers for low-energy surface brachytherapy dosimetry

2015

Purpose: A surface electronic brachytherapy (EBT) device is in fact an x-ray source collimated with specific applicators. Low-energy (<100 kVp) x-ray beam dosimetry faces several challenges that need to be addressed. A number of calibration protocols have been published for x-ray beam dosimetry. The media in which measurements are performed are the fundamental difference between them. The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface dose rate of a low-energy x-ray source with small field applicators using different calibration standards and different small-volume ionization chambers, comparing the values and uncertainties of each methodology. Methods: The surface dose rate of the EBT unit …

Dosimetry revisited for the HDR I192r brachytherapy source model mHDR-v2

2010

Purpose: Recently, the manufacturer of the HDR I 192 r mHDR-v2 brachytherapysource reported small design changes (referred to herein as mHDR-v2r) that are within the manufacturing tolerances but may alter the existing dosimetric data for this source. This study aimed to (1) check whether these changes affect the existing dosimetric data published for this source; (2) obtain new dosimetric data in close proximity to the source, including the contributions from I 192 r electrons and considering the absence of electronic equilibrium; and (3) obtain scatterdose components for collapsed cone treatment planning system implementation. Methods: Three different Monte Carlo(MC) radiation transport co…

Gas-Fluidization Characteristics of Binary Mixtures of Particles in 2D Geometry

2012

The bubbling behaviour of fluidized beds has been thoroughly investigated in the last decades by means of several techniques, e.g. X-ray, Inductance, Resistance and Impedance based techniques, PIV. In recent years, Digital Image Analysis Techniques have shown their potential for accurate and cost effectively measurements. Most of the work related to bubble behaviour analysis deals with single-sized particles, while almost all industrial equipment operates with multi-sized particles. Although considerable work has been done in the past with focus on the analysis of the mixing-segregation behaviour and predictions of fluid dynamics regime transitions, a lack of knowledge still exists in the an…

ADVANCED STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF LOCAL BUBBLE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS IN 2D GAS FLUIDIZED BEDS

2009

The principal difficulty in analysing fluidization quality and bubble dynamics is related to the possibility of measuring or predicting the physical and geometrical properties of gas bubbles rising in a granular medium. Even the development of detailed experimental correlations gives poor results, being necessary a fully statistical approach. On the above basis, the present work focuses on the statistical analysis of the behaviour of a 2-D fluidized bed operating under bubbling and slugging conditions, performing measurements of Local Bubble Size Distributions (BSD) along the bed. The analysis allowed to observe a characteristic bimodal shape of BSDs for different particles dimension and fl…
