Students' Positive Expectations and Concerns Prior to the School Transition to Lower Secondary School

This mixed-method study examines students' expectations and concerns before transitioning from primary to lower secondary school and the role of students' school-related wellbeing and self-esteem in their concerns. Students reported their beliefs about the forthcoming school transition and filled in a questionnaire assessing school burnout and self-esteem. The results showed that the students had positive expectations comprising comfort, friendships, learning, school environment, increased freedom and teacher -student relations. This study investigated Finnish pupils’ beliefs about English oral proficiency, its learning and assessment in order to give voice to the pupils themselves as well as to better understand their views on English oral proficiency. The data consisted of nine semistructured interviews and self-evaluations and peer evaluations of nine 9th graders from three Finnish basic education schools. The study was qualitative in its nature, and the data were mainly analysed using content analysis. This study examines longitudinal associations among reading skills, math skills and emotional well-being in a Finnish sample (n = 586) followed from the end of comprehensive school (Grade 9, age 15–16) to age 20. In particular, we determine whether the associations between skills and well-being are mediated by self-concept beliefs.
