Temporal evolution of heavy rainfall in the southern West Africa coastline belt.
2018
The Southern Coastalbelt of West Africa (SCWA) is exposed to recurrent flooding. The two objectives of the study are to show thespecificity of SCWA to heavy rainfall occurrence and to determine the trends of the latter. Daily rainfall data of41 stations in the southern parts of Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo and Benin for the period 1951–2015 and ClimateHazards Group InfraRed Precipitation data were used. The approach is based on the determination (for eachstation and grid point) of the 95th centile (P95) of precipitations greater than or equal to 1 mm. Results indicatethat rainfall is heavier on the coastal belt than inland (average P95 is 65,4 and 45,5 m/day for coastal and inlandstations res…
Variation in structural styles within fold-and-thrust belts: Insights from field mapping, cross-sections balancing, and 2D-kinematic modelling in the…
2021
Abstract Fold-and-thrust belts developed above an evaporite decollement host structural traps where geofluids, including hydrocarbons, can accumulate. A valid and accurate structural style intepretation is therefore crucial to understand the three-dimensional geometries in the subsurface, in order to better model geofluid reservoirs and to increase success during exploration. Here, we present a multidisciplinary approach to unravel the subsurface structural styles of the Jura fold-and-thrust belt (eastern France), combining geological mapping, from regional to outcrop scale, with cross-section balancing and 2D-kinematic forward modelling. Results show that the Jura fold-and-thrust belt is c…
The Role of Differential Parameters in Beltrami's Work
1997
Abstract Differential parameters play a relevant role in Beltrami's mathematical work. They are employed in different contexts, in order to express some well-known results in a new way and to extend potential theory and the theory of elasticity to a Riemannian manifold. The author aims to show that differential parameters enabled Beltrami to solve many mathematical questions and that they constitute the first step toward the conception of tensor calculus. Les parametres differentiels jouent un role important dans l'oeuvre mathematique de Beltrami. Ils sont employes en contextes differents, pour exprimer dans une maniere nouvelle quelques resultats bien-connus et pour generaliser la theorie …
DFT calculation of structures and NMR chemical shifts of simple models of small diameter zigzag single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)
2011
Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt‐shape molecules (cyclic acenes) and model single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were fully optimized at the unrestricted level of density functional theory (UB3LYP/6‐31G*). The models of SWCNTs were selected to get some insight into the potential changes of NMR chemical shift upon systematic increase of the molecular size. The theoretical NMR chemical shifts were calculated at the B3LYP/pcS‐2 level of theory using benzene as reference. In addition, the change of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of cyclic acenes. Both geometrical and NMR parameters were extrapolated t…
Middle Miocene–Early Pliocene wedge-top basins of NW Sicily (Italy): constraints for the tectonic evolution of a ‘non-conventional’ thrust belt, affe…
2014
The study of geological evolution of a multiphase orogenic belt is complex, expecially when the tectonic events are superimposed in a coaxial fashion. The Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt represents an interest- ing case study, as a non-coaxial superimposition of structures is recognizable, owing to large synkinematic clockwise rotations during each of two subsequent compressional events. These rotations involved also the syntectonic basins that developed in the wedge-top depozone. This study aims to constrain the tectono-depo- sitional evolution of the NW Sicily fold-and-thrust belt and the associated wedge-top depozone between the middle Miocene and the early Pliocene. Integrated analyses of…
A Qualitative-Quantitative Approach to V-Belt Mechanics
1996
A simplified formulation is adopted for the theoretical problem of tension distribution and radial penetration of a V-belt along the pulley groove. The trajectory portrait of the second order differential system describing the belt behavior is carefully analyzed and asymptotic approximations for the tension solutions are derived which are well suited for design purposes.
Cooperation Formats of China and Europe: Synergies and Divergences
2017
Abstract This contribution articulates the synergies and divergences of the various formats of cooperation between China and the European countries. The EU and China have a strong interest in each other’s flagship initiatives, namely the Investment Plan for Europe, and the One Belt, One Road Initiative (Silk Road Economic Belt and 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road). The authors argue that there are certain synergies between these initiatives. Furthermore, the new initiative EU-China Connectivity Platform is aimed to explore these synergies. The authors explore the recent developments in the EU-China investments, trade cooperation and the challenges of the ever-growing CEEC-China partnership i…
Les plaques-boucles mérovingiennes ornées d'une croix encadrée par deux griffons : à propos d'une découverte faite à Fleurey-sur-Ouche (Côte-d'Or)
2010
The presentation of this copper alloy belt buckle decorated with a cross flanked by two griffons from Fleurey-sur- Ouche (Côte-d'Or), gives us the opportunity to review our knowledge of this type of buckle, the corpus of which has been recently enriched by new examples. Even though the fifteen known pieces can be categorized in the group D defined by the characteristic finds of the Burgundian kingdom, the iconographical theme remains quite diverse. Also, discoveries have been made all over this vast area, underlining the existence of several workshops, not only in the Jura put also in the Lauragais area.
