Comparative evaluation of liquid chromatography versus gas chromatography using a β-cyclodextrin stationary phase for the determination of BTEX in oc…
2009
An HPLC method for the determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene in occupational environments was developed and compared with a GC-MS method. Chromatographic analysis using a beta-cyclodextrin stationary phase was performed after active and passive air sampling by adsorption on activated charcoal and pressurized fluid extraction. The analytes were completely separated and quantified using both methods, although GC-MS provided better resolutions and lower detection limits than HPLC. The HPLC method was unsuccessfully applied to the determination of benzene in real samples because its sensitivity was too low. Both methods were applied to the analysis …
Direct determination of benzene in gasoline by flow-injection Fourier transform infrared spectrometry
1993
Abstract A Fourier transform infrared spectrometric procedure for the automated determination of benzene in gasoline was developed, based on the use of flow-injection analysis. The method permits the direct determination of benzene without any pretreatment of samples, with a limit of detection of 0.02% (v/v) and a relative standard deviation of ca. 1% [for five independent analyses of a diluted sample containing a 0.4% (v/v) of benzene]. Results found by direct analysis agreed with those obtained by off-line and on-line standard addition methods. A rapid quality control procedure was developed, based on the on-line injection of gasoline samples (diluted 1 + 9 in hexane) into a carrier strea…
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF C18- AND STYRENE-DIVINYLBENZENE-BASED SORBENTS FOR THE ENRICHMENT OF PHENOLS FROM WATER
2001
The potential of solid-phase extraction with C18- and styrene divinylbenzene-based sorbents for the preconcentration of phenols from water samples has been evaluated for a variety of phenols of different polarities: phenol, o-, m- and p-cresol, 2-chlorophenol, and 4-chloro-3-methylphenol. The extraction efficiencies have been calculated for different volumes of samples containing the analytes at different concentration levels. The UV limits of detection were of 1–5 ng/mL, for the method using Bond Elut C18 cartridges and sample volumes of 25 mL, and 0.05–0.1 ng/mL (except for 4-chloro-3-methylphenol) for the method using the polymeric sorbent Bond Elut PPL and 1000 mL of the samples. Possib…
Micellar modified spectrophotometric determination of nitrobenzenes based upon reduction with tin(II), diazotisation and coupling with the Bratton–Ma…
1997
Abstract Nitrobenzenes, such as the antibiotic chloramphenicol, the vasodilator nicardipine, and the herbicides dinitramin, dinobuton, fenitrothion, methylparathion, oxyfluorfen, parathion, pendimethalin, quintozene, and trifluralin, were determined by using a spectrophotometric method in the visible region (540 nm). The method was based on the reduction of the nitrobenzenes to arylamines with tin(II) chloride, diazotisation of the arylamines and coupling of the diazonium ions with the Bratton–Marshall reagent. The two latter reactions were performed in a micellar medium of sodium dodecyl sulphate. The linear calibration range was 2×10 −6 to 7×10 −5 M ( r >0.999), with limits of detection i…
A rapid and reliable size-exclusion chromatographic method for determination of kojic dipalmitate in skin-whitening cosmetic products
2007
A size-exclusion chromatographic method has been developed to determine the relatively novel skin-whitening agent called kojic dipalmitate (KDP) in skin-whitening cosmetic products. Preliminary experiments were carried out in order to select the solvent for standard and sample solution, and also for mobile phase composition. A PLGel Mixed-D (polystyrene/divinylbenzene co-polymer) column and isocratic mobile phase of pure tetrahydrofuran (at 1.5 mL min(-1) flow rate) were used. Detection was carried out by means of an UV/vis spectrometry detector set at 248 nm. A study of interferences reveals that KDP can be determined without interferences coming from cosmetic matrices. Most other cosmetic…
Cavity ring down spectrometry for disease diagnostics using exhaled air
2017
In this paper we report the current stage of the development of a cavity ring-down spectrometer (CRDS) system using exhaled human breath analysis for the diagnostics of different diseases like diabetes and later lung cancer. The portable CRDS system is made in ultraviolet spectral region using Nd:Yag laser 266 nm pulsed light. Calibration of the CRDS system was performed using generated samples by KinTek automated permeation tube system and self-prepared mixtures with known concentration of benzene and acetone in air. First experiments showed that the limits of detection for benzene and acetone are several tens of ppb.
Separation and determination of homologues of linear alkylbenzenesulfonates by nonaqueous capillary zone electrophoresis using alkylammonium salts in…
2001
The separation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) by nonaqueous capillary electrophoresis (NACE) using negative polarity, and a buffer containing acetic acid and an alkylamine in nonaqueous ethanol, has been investigated. Several primary, secondary, and tertiary alkylamines with alkyl chains of different length were compared. The solutes travelled against the electroosmotic flow (EOF), and at the same time were braked by association with the alkylamine molecules or with the alkylammonium ions. The best resolution between adjacent LAS homologues (R approximately 2.1), partial isomer resolution in two peaks, and at the same time an excellent repeatability, was obtained with a small dipen…

Polar Diels–Alder reactions using electrophilic nitrobenzothiophenes. A combined experimental and DFT study
2015
Abstract The reactions between 2- and 3-nitrobenzothiophenes with three dienes of different nucleophilicity, 1-methoxy-3-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene, 1-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene and isoprene developed in anhydrous benzene and alternative under microwave irradiation with molecular solvents or in free solvent conditions, respectively, for produce dibenzothiophenes permit to conclude that both nitroheterocycles act as electrophile with the cited dienes. In the cases of the dienes 1-methoxy-3-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene and 1-trimethylsilyloxy-1,3-butadiene which posses major nucleophilicity the observed product is the normal cycloaddition one. However when the diene is isoprene t…
<title>Hologram recording in azobenzene oligomers</title>
2003
Elementary hologram (holographic grating) recording and their coherent optical erasure have been experimentally studied in azobenzene oligomer (ABO) layers differing by their chemical composition, matrices and by the connection type of azobenzene chromophores to the matrix (dispersed or covalently bound). The best holographic parameters (7.9% diffraction efficiency and 86 J/cm2 specific recording energy) were achieved in the samples with covalent bonding to the matrix. Vector recording is also possible. Recording is unstable and reversible. The coherent optical erasure studies have shown its efficiency dependencies on the initial diffraction efficiency, erasing beam intensity and grating pe…
