Smooth Feshbach map and operator-theoretic renormalization group methods

Abstract A new variant of the isospectral Feshbach map defined on operators in Hilbert space is presented. It is constructed with the help of a smooth partition of unity, instead of projections, and is therefore called smooth Feshbach map . It is an effective tool in spectral and singular perturbation theory. As an illustration of its power, a novel operator-theoretic renormalization group method is described and applied to analyze a general class of Hamiltonians on Fock space. The main advantage of the new renormalization group method over its predecessors is its technical simplicity, which it owes to the use of the smooth Feshbach map.

We reflect on family therapy and its history from two points of view, as an entity that becomes understood with the help of a twofold concept of a game, and a twofold concept of liberty. Systemic family therapy has always been comprehended with the help of game theory. Its development becomes more properly understood if we keep in mind that game itself is a dualistic concept entailing both a cultural and a logico-mathematical interpretation of a game. The article reconstructs and critically assesses some of the most recurring arguments in legal and political philosophy to the effect that social rights are different in structure from, and necessarily incompatible with, the more familiar civil and political liberties. The author shows that social rights and civil and political liberties have in common more than meets the eye, and so they are different in degree rather than in kind. Moreover, while these rights can certainly happen to conflict one against the other in particular instances, they prove not only to be compatible but even mutually reinforcing as far as their respective axiological foundations are concerned.
