A novel identification procedure from ambient vibration data

2020

AbstractAmbient vibration modal identification, also known as Operational Modal Analysis, aims to identify the modal properties of a structure based on vibration data collected when the structure is under its operating conditions, i.e., no initial excitation or known artificial excitation. This procedure for testing and/or monitoring historic buildings, is particularly attractive for civil engineers concerned with the safety of complex historic structures. However, since the external force is not recorded, the identification methods have to be more sophisticated and based on stochastic mechanics. In this context, this contribution will introduce an innovative ambient identification method b…

Automatic fringe pattern enhancement using truly adaptive period-guided bidimensional empirical mode decomposition.

2020

Fringe patterns encode the information about the result of a measurement performed via widely used optical full-field testing methods, e.g., interferometry, digital holographic microscopy, moiré techniques, structured illumination etc. Affected by the optical setup, changing environment and the sample itself fringe patterns are often corrupted with substantial noise, strong and uneven background illumination and exhibit low contrast. Fringe pattern enhancement, i.e., noise minimization and background term removal, at the pre-processing stage prior to the phase map calculation (for the measurement result decoding) is therefore essential to minimize the jeopardizing effect the mentioned error…

Tempo Induction from Music Recordings Using Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition Analysis

2011

Tempo and beat are among the most important features of Western music. Owing to the perceptual nature of tempo, its automatic analysis and extraction remains a difficult task for a large variety of music genres. Western music notation represents musical events using a hierarchical metrical structure distinguishing different time scales. This hierarchy is often modeled using three levels: the tatum, the tactus, and the measure. The tatum represents the shortest durational value in music that is not just an accidental phenomenon (Bilmes 1993). The tactus period is the most perceptually prominent period, and is the period at which most humans would tap their feet in time with the music (Lerdah…

Adaptive Threshold, Wavelet and Hilbert Transform for QRS Detection in Electrocardiogram Signals

2017

This paper combines Hilbert and Wavelet transforms and an adaptive threshold technique to detect the QRS complex of electrocardiogram signals. The method is performed in a window framework. First, the Wavelet transform is applied to the ECG signal to remove noise. Next, the Hilbert transform is applied to detect dominant peak points in the signal. Finally, the adaptive threshold technique is applied to detect R-peaks, Q, and S points. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated against the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, and the numerical results indicated significant detection accuracy.

Identification of strongly correlated spin liquid in herbertsmithite

2011

Exotic quantum spin liquid (QSL) is formed with such hypothetic particles as fermionic spinons carrying spin 1/2 and no charge. Here we calculate its thermodynamic and relaxation properties. Our calculations unveil the fundamental properties of QSL, forming strongly correlated Fermi system located at a fermion condensation quantum phase transition. These are in a good agreement with experimental data and allow us to detect the behavior of QSL as that observed in heavy fermion metals. We predict that the thermal resistivity of QSL under the application of magnetic fields at fixed temperature demonstrates a very specific behavior. The key features of our findings are the presence of spin-char…

A concise review on pseudo-bosons, pseudo-fermions and their relatives

2017

We review some basic definitions and few facts recently established for $\D$-pseudo bosons and for pseudo-fermions. We also discuss an extended version of these latter, based on biorthogonal bases, which lives in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. Some examples are described in details.

A new mathematical tool for an exact treatment of open quantum system dynamics

2005

A new method to obtain an operatorial exact solution of a wide class of Markovian master equations is presented. Its key point is the existence of a constant of motion partitioning the Hilbert space into finite-dimensional subspaces. The consequent possibility of representing the reduced density operator as a block diagonal matrix is shown. Each “block operator” evolves under the action of a non-unitary operator explicitly derived. Our mathematical approach is illustrated applying it to simple physical systems.
