Is it achievable to read aesthetic experience as a modular adaptation, and what would be its implication on the image of man, on aesthetics and on evolutionary theory itself? An alternative path is offered by evolutionary morphology, starting from the elaboration of a biologic concept of organism and from the notion of homology of function as a system of interconnections organized in a hierarchy. We deduce the possibility of thinking the peculiar innovation of aesthetic experience in an evolutionary way.

Neuroaesthetics aims at working out a neurobiological theory of aesthetic experience that accounts for neural invariants of perceptual properties fo artworks. In this paper, arguments are proposed that deal with the specification of the intended domain of application, its implications for neurobiological evidence that qualifies as explanans, the contribution that a rigorous phenomenological explanation of the perceptual variety in visual and musical arts can give to an evolutionary account of the cognitive skills underlying arts.
Towards the time-optimal control of dissipative spin-1/2 particles in nuclear magnetic resonance

International audience; We consider the time-optimal control of a spin 1/2 particle whose dynamics is governed by the Bloch equations with both longitudinal and transverse relaxation terms. We solve this control problem by using geometric optimal control techniques. We show the crucial role of singular extremals in the time-optimal synthesis. This role can mainly be attributed to the presence of dissipation. We also analyze the robustness of the optimal control sequence when both the maximum amplitude of the control field and the dissipative parameters are varied. Finally, we present an experimental implementation of the different solutions using techniques of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.
Z production cross sections and lepton pair forward-backward asymmetries

Precise values of the Z resonance cross sections and lepton pair forward-backward asymmetries are measured from a sample of 1.3 million Z decays into hadrons and charged leptons taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP. A silicon-tungsten luminosity calorimeter was installed in ALEPH in 1992, permitting the determination of the absolute luminosity to a systematic precision of 0.15% (experimental) and 0.25% (theoretical). This is combined with a better understanding of the hadronic event selection and an improved tau pair selection. Including the ALEPH results of the past three years one obtains sigma(h)0 = (41.60 +/- 0.16) nb, and R(l) = 20.69 +/- 0.09. The corresponding number of light neutrin…

The process e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 gamma has been studied at a center-of-mass energy near the Y(4S) resonance using a 89.3 fb-1 data sample collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider. From the measured 3pi mass spectrum we have obtained the products of branching fractions for the omega and phi mesons, B(omega --> e+e-)B(omega --> 3pi)=(6.70 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.27)10-5 and B(phi --> e+e-)B(phi --> 3pi)=(4.30 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.21)10-5, and evaluated the e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 cross section for the e+e- center-of-mass energy range 1.05 to 3.00 GeV. Measurement of theηandη′transition form factors atq2=112 GeV2

We report a study of the processes e^+e^-→ηγ and e^+e^-→η′γ at a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV, using a 232 fb^(-1) data sample collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II collider at SLAC. We observe 20_(-5)^(+6)ηγ and 50_(-7)^(+8)η′γ events over small backgrounds, and measure the cross sections σ(e^+e^-→ηγ)=4.5_(-1.1)^(+1.2)±0.3 fb and σ(e^+e^-→η′γ)=5.4±0.8±0.3 fb. The corresponding transition form factors at q^2=112 GeV^2 are q^2|F_η(q^2)|=0.229±0.030±0.008 GeV, and q^2|F_η′(q^2)|=0.251±0.019±0.008 GeV, respectively.
Study ofe+e−→pp¯via initial-state radiation atBABAR

The e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}pp cross section is determined over a range of pp masses, from threshold to 4.5 GeV/c{sup 2}, by studying the e{sup +}e{sup -}{yields}pp{gamma} process. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 232 fb{sup -1}, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring, at an e{sup +}e{sup -} center-of-mass energy of 10.6 GeV. The mass dependence of the ratio of electric and magnetic form factors, G{sub E}/G{sub M}, is measured for pp masses below 3 GeV/c{sup 2}; its value is found to be significantly larger than 1 for masses up to 2.2 GeV/c{sup 2}.
