Probiotics and oral health

2012

Probiotics are living microorganisms (e.g., bacteria) that are either the same as or similar to organisms found naturally in the human body and may be beneficial to health. Current researches have shown that the balance between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria is essential in order to maintain the oral health. Therefore, oral cavity has recently been suggested as a relevant target for probiotic applications. Dental caries can be seen as a microbial imbalance where the oral microbiota shift towards community dominance which produces acidogenic and acid-tolerant gram positive bacteria. Similarly, the accumulation of bacteria within the biofilm, facilitated by poor oral hygiene, predisposes …

Development ofBifidobacterium lactis Bb 12 onβ-(2,6)-Linked Fructan-Containing Substrate

2004

β-(2,1)-linked fructan of plant origin (inulin) and the related oligosaccharides (FOS) as non-digestible carbohydrates, i.e., potent prebiotics, can stimulate the growth of various probiotic lactic acid bacteria, including a number of bifidobacteria strains. The related (3-(2,6)-linked fructans of microbial origin (levan and FOS), however, have scarcely been investigated in this respect. Therefore, the bifidogenic properties of various fructans, i.e., inulin, levan, fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and fructan syrup (FS), were tested as glucose substitutes in MRS media and were compared concerning their effect on the commercial strain Bifidobacterium lactis Bb 12. Although glucose was the prefe…

Traslitterazioni sintattiche: il ciclo barese

2014

Emended descriptions of genera of the family Halobacteriaceae.

2009

The family Halobacteriaceae currently contains 96 species whose names have been validly published, classified in 27 genera (as of September 2008). In recent years, many novel species have been added to the established genera but, in many cases, one or more properties of the novel species do not agree with the published descriptions of the genera. Authors have often failed to provide emended genus descriptions when necessary. Following discussions of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes Subcommittee on the Taxonomy of Halobacteriaceae, we here propose emended descriptions of the genera Halobacterium, Haloarcula, Halococcus, Haloferax, Halorubrum, Haloterrigena, Natrialba…

Hidden oscillations in nonlinear control systems

2011

Abstract The method of harmonic linearization, numerical methods, and the applied bifurcation theory together discover new opportunities for analysis of hidden oscillations of control systems. In the present paper new analytical-numerical algorithm for hidden oscillation localization is discussed. Counterexamples construction to Aizerman's conjecture and Kalman's conjecture on absolute stability of control systems are considered.

Hydrocracking ofn-heptane. Study of NiO-MoO3catalysts supported on a HY ultrastable zeolite

1986

The hydrocracking of n-heptane in the temperature range of 573 to 623 K and at 2.45 × 106 Pa pressure has been employed as a test reaction for the study of Ni—Mo bifunctional catalysts supported on a HY ultrastable zeolite. Two groups of catalysts containing 8 and 12 wt% of MoO3 and different amounts of NiO have been studied. In both series a maximum in the activity has been obtained for catalysts with a Ni/Mo atomic ratio of 0.8-1.0. The order of the impregnation of the oxides can have little influence on the activity. The most active catalyst has been obtained when the zeolite is exchanged with NH+4 ions until the Na+ level is less than 2% of the original and calcined at 823 K to obtain a…

POSS-based 3D functional networks as catalysts for the conversion of carbon dioxide

2023

Tracing symmetries and their breakdown through phases of heterotic (2,2) compactifications

2015

We are considering the class of heterotic $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds with 9 fields corresponding to $A_1^9$ Gepner models. We classify all of its Abelian discrete quotients and obtain 152 inequivalent models closed under mirror symmetry with $\mathcal{N}=1,2$ and $4$ supersymmetry in 4D. We compute the full massless matter spectrum at the Fermat locus and find a universal relation satisfied by all models. In addition we give prescriptions of how to compute all quantum numbers of the 4D states including their discrete R-symmetries. Using mirror symmetry of rigid geometries we describe orbifold and smooth Calabi-Yau phases as deformations away from the Landau-Ginzburg Ferma…

Supersymmetry from boundary conditions

2004

We study breaking and restoration of supersymmetry in five-dimensional theories by determining the mass spectrum of fermions from their equations of motion. Boundary conditions can be obtained from either the action principle by extremizing an appropriate boundary action (interval approach) or by assigning parities to the fields (orbifold approach). In the former, fields extend continuously from the bulk to the boundaries, while in the latter the presence of brane mass-terms cause fields to jump when one moves across the branes. We compare the two approaches and in particular we carefully compute the non-trivial jump profiles of the wavefunctions in the orbifold picture for very general bra…

Neutrino oscillations and flavor theories

2020

I discuss neutrino mixing ansatze, such as the generalized Tri-bimaximal and bi-large mixing patterns, and their utility in describing the oscillation data. Unitarity tests and probes of the absolute neutrino mass scale are briefly discussed. A short overview of neutrino mass generation is given. I discuss an orbifold approach to the flavor problem and the resulting implications, e.g. the golden quark-lepton mass relation, neutrinoless double beta decay and neutrino oscillation predictions.
