Effect of 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) on Hormones of Energy Balance in a TCDD-Sensitive and a TCDD-Resistant Rat Strain

One of the hallmarks of the acute toxicity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a drastically reduced feed intake by an unknown mechanism. To further elucidate this wasting syndrome, we followed the effects of a single large dose (100 μg/kg) of TCDD on the serum levels of several energy balance-influencing hormones, clinical chemistry variables, and hepatic aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) expression in two rat strains that differ widely in their TCDD sensitivities, for up to 10 days. Differentiation between Brain Metastasis and Glioblastoma using MRI and two-dimensional Turbo Spectroscopic Imaging data

In this paper we propose a novel technique to differentiate brain metastases from high-grade gliomas, which represent the most aggressive and common brain lesions. In spite of the significant progresses achieved in the field of MRI in the last decades, the differentiation between these two types of tumors is still a challenge as they show a similar appearance on MRI images, but require a completely different therapeutic treatment. Analysis of Complete Neuroblast Cell Lineages in the Drosophila Embryonic Brain via DiI Labeling

Proper functioning of the brain relies on an enormous diversity of neural cells generated by neural stem cell-like neuroblasts (NBs). Each of the about 100 NBs in each side of brain generates a nearly invariant and unique cell lineage, consisting of specific neural cell types that develop in defined time periods. In this chapter we describe a method that labels entire NB lineages in the embryonic brain. Clonal DiI labeling allows us to follow the development of an NB lineage starting from the neuroectodermal precursor cell up to the fully developed cell clone in the first larval instar brain. Basking in Reflected Glory and Blasting

This study examines, in soccer fanzines, two identity-management strategies—basking in reflected glory (BIRGing) and blasting—of two groups of highly identified soccer fans with allegiance to the same team. Results show strong support for the BIRG phenomenon among both ultra fan groups but little evidence of the blasting phenomenon among either group. The implications of these findings are discussed in regard to social identity management among sports fans.

Role of the protein phosphatase CD45 and lipid rafts in the maintenance of acute myeloblastic leukemiaand development of a new therapeutic treatment

CD45 is a pan-leukocyte protein with tyrosine phosphatase activity involved in the regulation of cytokinereceptors in hematopoiesis, such as the GM-CSF. We report here on new chemical compound,Pyrido[4,3-b]quinoxaline (PyQ), which is a plasma membrane disrupting agent, as a potential drug fortreatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Indeed, we show that the hematopoietic cell lines aremore sensitive to PyQ, compared with non- hematopoietic cell lines. Modulation of protein tyrosine nitration and inflammatory mediators by isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside.

The nitration of tyrosine caused by peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species is clearly detrimental for some physiological processes; however, its signalling role is still open to controversy. Among the natural phenolics known for their ability to oppose free tyrosine nitration, isoprenylhydroquinone glucoside is investigated due to its unusual structure, which contains a simple hydroxybenzene alkylated by a hemiterpenoid moiety. This hydroquinone was shown to be an effective inhibitor of peroxynitrite-induced protein tyrosine nitration in 3T3 fibroblasts. FACIT collagen (1α-chain) is expressed by hemocytes and epidermis during the inflammatory response of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis

Based on previous cloning and sequencing study, real-time PCR and in situ hybridization assays of the inflamed body wall of LPS-injected Ciona intestinalis showed the enhanced gene expression of a collagen with FACIT structural features (Ci-type IX-Col 1alpha-chain). By using specific antibodies raised against an opportunely chosen Ci-type IX-Col synthetic peptide, the fibroblast property of hemocytes challenged in vitro with LPS (at 4h) was displayed by flow cytometry, while immunocytochemistry identified hemocytes with large granules (morula cells) as collagen-producing cells. Interaction of dicaffeoylquinic derivatives with peroxynitrite and other reactive nitrogen species.

Plant phenolic antioxidants, among them catechins and hydroxycinnamoyl conjugates, constitute a well defined class of inhibitors of reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To gain deeper insight in this field, we examined the effects of 3,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (DCA), its methyl ester (DCE) and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in nitrative and oxidative processes. These compounds were found to be strong inhibitors of the nitration of tyrosine residues induced by ONOO- in bovine seroalbumin, with their IC50 values (10-40 microM) notably decreasing in the presence of bicarbonate.
