Background Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe ocular allergy with pathogenic mechanism poorly understood and no efficacious treatment. The aims of the study were to determine quantities and distribution of Hsp chaperones in the conjunctiva of VKC patients and assess their levels in conjunctival epithelial and fibroblast cultures exposed to inflammatory stimuli. Deoxyribonuclease activities in human leukemic cells and mouse lymphoblasts

Summary The deoxyribonuclease activities from human lymphocytes have been compared with the activities from acute lymphocytic leukemic cells and mouse leukemic cells L5178Y using the in situ detection of deoxyribonucleases in DNA-containing polyacrylamide gels following their separation by micro-disc-electrophoresis. A neutral deoxyribonuclease activity is completely missing in leukemic cells of untreated patients while a group of acid deoxyribonuclease activities is increased. A similar deoxyribonuclease pattern can be seen in L5178Y cells. Under medical treatment the increment of the acid deoxyribonuclease activities disappears and the neutral deoxyribonuclease activity reappears.

Background Inhibition of activin/myostatin pathway has emerged as a novel approach to increase muscle mass and bone strength. In many mammals, including rodents and humans, removal of one lung results in the compensatory growth of the remaining lung; however, the mechanism of compensatory lung growth is unknown. Here, we investigated the changes in morphology and phenotype of pleural cells after pneumonectomy. Between days 1 and 3 after pneumonectomy, cells expressing α-smooth muscle actin (SMA), a cytoplasmic marker of myofibroblasts, were significantly increased in the pleura compared to surgical controls (p < .01).
