DFT calculations of structures, 13C NMR chemical shifts, and Raman RBM mode of simple models of small‐diameter zigzag (4,0) carboxylated single‐walle…

2012

Linearly conjugated benzene rings (acenes), belt‐shaped molecules (cyclic acenes), and models of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with one carboxylic group at the open end were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6‐31G* level of theory. These models were selected to obtain some insight into the nuclear isotropic changes resulting from systematically increasing the basic building units of open‐tip‐monocarboxylated SWCNTs. In addition, the position of radial breathing mode (RBM), empirically correlated with the SWCNT diameter, was directly related with the radius of model cyclic acene rings. A regular convergence of selected structural, NMR, and Raman parameters with the molecular system size…

Birth weight, adult weight, and cardiovascular biomarkers : Evidence from the Cardiovascular Young Finns Study

2021

This study quantifies the causal effect of birth weight on cardiovascular biomarkers in adulthood using the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finns Study (YFS). We apply a multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) method that provides a novel approach to improve inference in causal analysis based on a mediation framework. The results show that birth weight is linked to triglyceride levels (β = −0.294; 95% CI [−0.591, 0.003]) but not to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels (β = 0.007; 95% CI [−0.168, 0.183]). The total effect of birth weight on triglyceride levels is partly offset by a mediation pathway linking birth weight to adult BMI (β = 0.111; 95% CI [−0.013, 0.234]). The nega…

Bone marrow-derived progenitors are greatly reduced in patients with severe COPD and low-BMI.

2009

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients have reduced circulating hemopoietic progenitors. We hypothesized that severity of COPD parallels the decrease in progenitors and that the reduction in body mass index (BMI) could be associated with more severe bone marrow dysfunction. We studied 39 patients with moderate to very severe COPD (18 with low-BMI and 21 with normal-BMI) and 12 controls. Disease severity was associated to a greater reduction in circulating progenitors. Proangiogenetic and inflammatory markers correlated with disease severity parameters. Compared to normal-BMI patients, low-BMI patients showed: greater reduction in circulating progenitors; higher VEGF-A, VEGF-C…

Influence of the Oxic-Settling-Anaerobic (OSA) Process on Methane Production by Anaerobic Digestion of Sewage Sludge

2023

The present study evaluated different sludge-reduction mechanisms in the oxic-settling-anaerobic (OSA) process in terms of their effects on methane productivity by anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. Two different layouts were investigated for the sludge return from an anaerobic side-stream reactor (ASSR) to the anoxic (scheme A) or the aerobic (scheme B) reactor of a pre-denitrification plant. Biochemical methane-potential (BMP) assays performed on the excess sludge revealed that scheme A promoted an overall increase of methane production in the OSA (20 mLCH4 gVSS−1d−1, +19%), although compared with a control CAS plant a significant decrease in the excess sludge production (3…

Effect of calculation methods and presence of false positives on perception thresholds

2023

Perception thresholds are commonly used in food science to discriminate between those compounds that are more or less odour-active. It is not rare to use values from other studies and apply them to our data, however, we observed that the procedure to evaluate and calculate perception thresholds is not standardised. The aim of this study was to explore the influence of calculation methods on threshold values. To do so, we used a 3-AFC sensory procedure to determine the orthonasal and retronasal detection values of 26 compounds, amongst them some compounds that usually contribute to the aroma of strawberry and caramel (e.g. vanillin, Furaneol and damascenone). The thresholds were calculated b…

Urban drinking and driving:comparison of electric scooter and bicycle related accidents in facial fracture patients

2022

In recent years, electric scooters (e-scooter) have emerged as an alternative mode of urban transport due to their availability and effortless use. However, e-scooter-related trauma and injuries, especially to the head, have received wide media coverage and raised public concern about their safety. We aim to determine and compare clinically relevant variables, incidence, and severity between bicycle and e-scooter-related facial fractures and potential protective measures for injury prevention. This retrospective study comprised all patients admitted to a tertiary trauma center with bicycle or e-scooter-related facial fractures between January 2019 and October 2020. Patient- and injury-relat…

Luun morfogeneettisen proteiini 4:n kohdegeenien SKIL ja ID2 vaikutukset rintasyöpäsoluihin

2017

Rintasyöpä on johtava naisten syöpäkuolemien aiheuttaja maailmanlaajuisesti. Luun morfogeneettiset proteiinit (BMP) ovat tranformoiva kasvutekijä beta- superperheeseen kuuluvia proteiineja. BMP:den tiedetään olevan osallisina monissa syöpätyypeissä. Rintasyövässä BMP4:llä on merkittäviä vaikutuksia solukasvuun, liikkuvuuteen ja levinnäisyyteen. Aiempien tutkimusten mukaan BMP4:n on havaittu laskevan solukasvua merkittävästi rintasyöpäsoluilla. Tämän tutkimuksen kohteena oli kaksi BMP4:n kohdegeeniä, ID2 (Inhibitor of DNA binding 2) ja SKIL eli SKI-like proto-onkogeeni. Hypoteesina oli selvittää johtuuko BMP4:n vaikutukset solukasvuun ID2- tai SKIL-geenistä. BT-474 ja T-47D rintasyöpäsoluja …

Temperature effect on solubility of aroma compounds in various aqueous solutions

2005

International audience; Solubility of nine aroma compounds (methyl ketones, ethyl esters, aldehyde and alcohol) in various aqueous solutions was measured by the mutual solubility method from -10 to +10degreesC. Influence of both, the nature (carbohydrates and polyols) and the substrate concentration (from 0 to 57.5g/100g) on aroma solubility in aqueous solutions was studied. Aroma solubility in water decreased when aroma hydrophobicity increased. Aroma solubility in various aqueous solutions decreased when substrate concentration increased; their solubility was higher in polyols solutions than in polysaccharides ones. Temperature effect on aroma solubility showed a noncontinuous evolution f…

DÉCOUVERTES FUNÉRAIRES GALLO-ROMAINES DANS LE FAUBOURG SAINT-GILLES DE LANGRES (HAUTE-MARNE)

2009
