International audience; The biodiversity of growth and energetics in Leuconostoc sp. has been studied in MRS lactose medium with and without citrate. On lactose alone, Ln. lactis has a growth rate double that of Ln. cremoris and Ln. mesenteroides. The pH is a more critical parameter for Ln. mesenteroides than for Ln. lactis or Ln. cremoris; without pH control Ln. mesenteroides is unable to acidify the medium under pH 4.5, while with pH control and as a consequence of a high Y(ATP) its growth is greater than Ln. lactis and Ln. cremoris. Isolation and characterization of Urbain, a 20-hydroxyecdysone-inducible gene expressed during morphogenesis of Bombyx mori wing imaginal discs.

In insects, wing imaginal discs respond to the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone by initiating morphogenesis leading to the formation of the adult flight appendages. In this work we analyse the expression of a Bombyx gene, referred to as Urbain, whose cDNA had been previously isolated from wing discs (Chareyre et al. 1993). Accumulation of the 1.8 kb transcript occurs concomitantly with the increase of 20-hydroxyecdysone titer at every stage examined during post-embryonic development. In vitro, its accumulation is delayed 6–9 h after exposure to 20-hydroxyecdysone. Studies in the presence of cycloheximide have established that Urbain is a secondary response gene. Genetic and environmental effects on body mass index during adolescence: a prospective study among Finnish twins

Objective: To study genetic and environmental factors affecting body mass index (BMI) and BMI phenotypic correlations across adolescence. Design: Prospective, population-based, twin cohort study. Participants and methods: We used twin modeling in 2413 monozygotic and same-sex and opposite-sex dizygotic Finnish twin pairs born in 1983–1987 and assessed using self-report questionnaires at 11–12, 14 and 17 years of age. Results: Heritability of BMI was estimated to be 0.58–0.69 among 11–12- and 14-year-old boys and girls, 0.83 among 17-year-old boys and 0.74 among 17-year-old girls. Pico: A data acquisition program for picosecond laser spectroscopy

Abstract A data acquisition and control program for picosecond pump and probe experiments has been developed. The program PICO is written in C-programming language for maximum efficiency. The software which runs on an IBM PC compatible microcomputer controls a stepper motor driven optical delay, and at the same time collects data from a digital lock-in amplifier. PICO can be used to control any experiment utilizing two-beam pump probe technique. The modular structure of the software allows for easy implementation with different hardware configurations. Stochastic seismic analysis of offshore towers

After a brief review of the main problems and the most common analysis methods for offshore structures, a method of analysis for offshore towers submerged in water and subjected to strong earthquake motions is proposed. Nonlinear drag effects as well as random non-stationary seismic excitations are considered by means of a linearization technique based on a particular step-by-step procedure. Using a discrete lumped-mass model, the standard deviations of nodal displacements and velocities are evaluated. The probability of not exceeding a defined threshold of nodal displacements is also computed.
