A case report of coexistence of a sialolith and an adenoid cystic carcinoma in the submandibular gland
2006
Ôhe occurrence of sialoliths in the submandibular gland is 80% due to the specific anatomy of both the gland and its duct. The diagnosis is rather easy because of the obvious clinical signs of the entity. Imaging studies are always necessary in order to treat the patient as effectively as possible. The stones do not tend to occur within the gland as frequently as in the respective duct. The coexistence of sialoliths and malignant tumors is extremely rare. A 70-year-old woman with intraparenchymal stone was operated in our ENT department. In addition to the sialolith the pathological examination revealed the existence of an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC), that extended to the neighboring ske…
Compared Binding Properties between Resveratrol and Other Polyphenols to Plasmatic Albumin: Consequences for the Health Protecting Effect of Dietary …
2014
International audience; Phytophenols are considered to have beneficial effects towards human physiology. They are food microcomponents with potent chemopreventive properties towards the most three frequent contemporary human diseases, e.g., cardiovascular alterations, cancer and neurodegenerative pathologies. Related to this, the plasmatic form and plasmatic level of plant polyphenols in the body circulation are crucial for their efficiency. Thus, determinations of the binding process of resveratrol and of common flavonoids produced by major edible plants, berries and fruits to plasma proteins are essential. The interactions between resveratrol and albumin, a major plasma protein, were comp…
Toward an update of the structural model in Italian submerged areas: contributions from the EMODnet Geology Project
2016
The European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODNet) Project aims at the collection of as many existing data as possible on European Seas to be represented on digital maps at the 1:250,000 scale, accessible via web through a dedicated portal. It is articulated into different Lots concerning Bathymetry, Geology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physical Habitats, Human activities. The Geology Lot is realized by a Consortium in which the Geological Survey of Italy is partner. EMODnet Geology requires the compilation of a number of layers subdivided into Work Packages (WP), referring to seafloor sediments grainsize, sedimentation rates, Quaternary geology, pre-Quaternary geology and stratigr…
Gas geochemistry of shallow submarine vents in the Aegean sea (Greece)
2017
The Aegean area, which is geodynamically very active, is characterised by intense seismic activity, presence of active volcanic systems and anomalous geothermal gradients. Like other regions of intense geodynamic activity it is also characterized by extensive geogenic degassing. Gas manifestations are not only widespread on land but are also very frequent underwater. Many of these, as for example those of Milos and Santorini, are known since long time and have been previously studied although the targets were generally the hot waters or the sediments affected by the emissions (Smith and Cronan 1978, Dando et al. 1995, Price et al. 2013, Megalovassilis 2014).The present study aims at produci…
Arctic Connect Project and Cyber Security Control, ARCY
2019
The submarine communication cables form a vast network on the seabed and transmit massive amounts of data across oceans. They provide over 95% of international telecommunications — not via satellites as is commonly assumed. The global submarine network is the “backbone” of the Internet, and enables the ubiquitous use of mail, social media, phone and banking services. To these days no any other technology than submarine cables systems has not been such a strategic impact to our society without being known it as such by the people. This also means that it is at the same time a very interesting destination for hackers, cyber attackers, terrorist and state actors. They seek to gain access to in…
IDENTIFICATION OF BACTERIAL TAXA IN ARCHAEOLOGICAL WATERLOGGED WOOD
2014
Summary The microscopic and molecular techniques described in this study are aimed at understanding the degradation processes of the anatomical structure of submerged archaeological wood, correlating it to the degradation induced by bacteria. The SEM micrographs showed alterations of the wooden structure due to bacterial colonization, as well as the presence of pyrite framboids. The difficulty of extracting bacterial DNA from wooden fragments belonging to submerged finds is well-known, due to the presence of many inhibitors; this study describes some extraction and in vitro amplification protocols for wooden submerged finds. The results of the molecular investigations, based on the analysis…
Effect of two distinct implant macro-designs on the osseointegration of bicortically installed implants in two topographic sites. A histomorphometric…
2019

Designing Dynamic Sustainable Business Models to Assess the Feasibility of an Industrial Symbiosis: The Case of the Retro-Port Area of Trieste
2023
This study evaluates the managerial sustainability of implementing a decision support system for industrial symbiosis through a recent business modeling methodology. The decision support system is intended to facilitate the identification of implementable industrial symbiosis good practices in a pilot project located in the industrial retro-port area of Trieste. To evaluate the feasibility of this project, a qualitative “Dynamic business model canvas for sustainability” was designed and supported by a system dynamics approach using causal loop diagrams. The study analyzed various governance scenarios for managing the decision support system (public, private, or public–private partnership) a…
Stormwater Source Control as a Strategy for Sustainable Development: State of the Practice and Perceived Trends
2005
The primary objective of the paper is to draw upon the experiences acquired in many parts of the world to provide an up-to-date summary of the state of the practice for source control techniques and approaches, in a sustainable development context. After a discussion of the prevailing context for urban drainage approaches, three main themes covering techniques and design criteria, institutional aspects and performance issues are discussed relative to source control implementation. The discussion is based on findings from the compilation and analysis of available literature, recently developed databases, the experience of the different members of the SOCOMA group and recent research on desig…
