Area of intrinsic graphs and coarea formula in Carnot Groups
2020
AbstractWe consider submanifolds of sub-Riemannian Carnot groups with intrinsic $$C^1$$ C 1 regularity ($$C^1_H$$ C H 1 ). Our first main result is an area formula for $$C^1_H$$ C H 1 intrinsic graphs; as an application, we deduce density properties for Hausdorff measures on rectifiable sets. Our second main result is a coarea formula for slicing $$C^1_H$$ C H 1 submanifolds into level sets of a $$C^1_H$$ C H 1 function.
A rigidity theorem for the pair ${\cal q}{\Bbb C} P^n$ (complex hyperquadric, complex projective space)
1999
Given a compact Kahler manifold M of real dimension 2n, let P be either a compact complex hypersurface of M or a compact totally real submanifold of dimension n. Let \(\cal q\) (resp. \({\Bbb R} P^n\)) be the complex hyperquadric (resp. the totally geodesic real projective space) in the complex projective space \({\Bbb C} P^n\) of constant holomorphic sectional curvature 4\( \lambda \). We prove that if the Ricci and some (n-1)-Ricci curvatures of M (and, when P is complex, the mean absolute curvature of P) are bounded from below by some special constants and volume (P) / volume (M) \(\leq \) volume (\(\cal q\))/ volume \(({\Bbb C} P^n)\) (resp. \(\leq \) volume \(({\Bbb R} P^n)\) / volume …
Experimental study on triangular central baffle flume
2019
Abstract In this paper the results of the experiments performed to study the flow through a Triangular Central Baffle Flume (TCBF) are reported. The investigated flume consists of a triangular baffle of the apex angle of 75° with a given base width. The theoretical stage-discharge formula was deduced by applying the Buckingham's Theorem and incomplete self-similarity hypothesis and was calibrated using the laboratory measurements carried out in this investigation. The proposed stage-discharge formula is characterized by a mean absolute relative error of 7.4% and 72% of the data points are in an error range of ±5%. The results indicate that TCBF flume is characterized by a flow capacity high…
Volume estimate for a cone with a submanifold as vertex
1992
We give some estimates for the volume of a cone with vertex a submanifold P of a Riemannian or Kaehler manifold M. The estimates are functions of bounds of the mean curvature of P and the sectional curvature of M. They are sharp on cones having a basis which is contained in a tubular hypersurface about P in a space form or in a complex space form.
Pappus type theorems for motions along a submanifold
2004
Abstract We study the volumes volume( D ) of a domain D and volume( C ) of a hypersurface C obtained by a motion along a submanifold P of a space form M n λ . We show: (a) volume( D ) depends only on the second fundamental form of P , whereas volume( C ) depends on all the i th fundamental forms of P , (b) when the domain that we move D 0 has its q -centre of mass on P , volume( D ) does not depend on the mean curvature of P , (c) when D 0 is q -symmetric, volume( D ) depends only on the intrinsic curvature tensor of P ; and (d) if the image of P by the ln of the motion (in a sense which is well-defined) is not contained in a hyperplane of the Lie algebra of SO ( n − q − d ), and C …
Proton dynamics in bacterial spores, a neutron scattering investigation
2014
International audience; Results from first neutron scattering experiments on bacterial spores are reported. The elastic intensities and mean square displacements have a non-linear behaviour as function of temperature, which is in agreement with a model presenting more pronounced variations at around 330 K (57 • C) and 400 K (127 • C). Based on the available literature on thermal properties of bacterial spores, mainly referring to differential scanning calorimetry, they are suggested to be associated to main endothermic transitions induced by coat and/or core bacterial response to heat treatment.

Conceptual design of the enhanced coolant purification systems for the European HCLL and HCPB test blanket modules
2019
Abstract The Coolant Purification Systems (CPSs) is one of the most relevant ancillary systems of European Helium Cooled Lead Lithium (HCLL) and Helium Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) Test Blanket Modules (TBMs) which are currently in the preliminary design phase in view of their installation and operation in ITER. The CPS implements mainly two functions: the extraction and concentration of the tritium permeated from the TBM modules into the primary cooling circuit and the chemistry control of helium primary coolant. During the HCLL and HCPB-TBSs (Test Blanket Systems) Conceptual Design Review (CDR) in 2015 it was recognized the need of reducing the tritium permeation into the Port Cell #16 of ITE…
MEASURING TEACHERS-AS-LEARNERS’ DIGITAL SKILLS AND READINESS TO STUDY ONLINE FOR SUCCESSFUL E-LEARNING EXPERIENCE
2019
INTRODUCTION
We are living in the information society and digital competence is one of eight key competences for lifelong learning strategies (European Competence Framework); it is “both a requirement and right of citizens, if they are to be functional in today’s society” [1].
The project “Competency based curriculum” is supported by the European Social Fund (ESF) and implemented by the National Centre for Education (NCE) of Latvia. E-learning course modules are to be developed and implemented for the professional development of all teachers in Latvia (pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary school) [2]. These e-learning courses will be available as self-direc…
Chronological records of metal deposition in sediments from the Strait of Sicily, central Mediterranean: assessing natural fluxes and anthropogenic a…
2010
Abstract Sediment box-cores were recovered from the Strait of Sicily along two onshore–offshore transects in water depths of 29–500 m. Samples were dated by 210 Pb and analysed for major and trace elements. Inspections of chronological profiles integrated with application of statistical algorithms to the geochemical dataset and supported by in situ hydrological observations were used to assess factors driving element distributions. Mineralogical and chemical variability of sediments offshore of the southwestern Sicily coast reflect the irregular sea floor morphology of the Adventure Bank. Anthropogenic inputs explain enrichments with respect to background values for Sb, As, Pb, and Hg, that…
