Illumina-based RiboMethSeq approach for mapping of 2'-O-Me residues in RNA
2016
International audience; RNA 2'-O-methylation is one of the ubiquitous nucleotide modifications found in many RNA types from Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya. RNAs bearing 2'-O-methylations show increased resistance to degradation and enhanced stability in helices. While the exact role of each 2'-O-Me residue remained elusive, the catalytic protein Fibrillarin (Nop1 in yeast) responsible for 2'-O-methylation in eukaryotes, is associated with human pathologies. Therefore, there is an urgent need to precisely map and quantify hundreds of 2'-O-Me residues in RNA using high-throughput technologies. Here, we develop a reliable protocol using alkaline fragmentation of total RNA coupled to a commonly …
Areca nut and its role in oral submucous fibrosis
2014
Areca nut, commonly called as betel nut or supari, is a fruit of areca catechu palm tree, which is native of South Asia and Pacific Islands. The seed or endosperm is consumed fresh, boiled or after sun drying or curing. Chewing areca nut is thought to have central nervous system stimulating effect and along with this it is known to have salivary stimulating and digestive properties. According to the traditional Ayurvedic medicine, chewing areca nut and betel leaf is a good remedy against halitosis. It is also used for its deworming property. Along with these beneficial effects of areca nut one of its most harmful effects on the human body in general and oral cavity in particular is the deve…
Novel canine odorant binding proteins
2022
The present invention relates to the use of a sequence chosen among Seq ID No 3, Seq ID No l, Seq ID No 2, Seq ID No 4, Seq ID No 5, Seq ID No 6, Seq ID No 7, Seq ID No 8, and functional variants thereof, as an odorant binding protein (OBP).
A β-1,3 Glucan Sulfate Induces Resistance in Grapevine against Plasmopara viticola Through Priming of Defense Responses, Including HR-like Cell Death
2008
Sulfated laminarin (PS3) has been shown previously to be an elicitor of plant defense reactions in tobacco and Arabidopsis and to induce protection against tobacco mosaic virus. Here, we have demonstrated the efficiency of PS3 in protecting a susceptible grapevine cultivar (Vitis vinifera cv. Marselan) against downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) under glasshouse conditions. This induced resistance was associated with potentiated H2O2 production at the infection sites, upregulation of defense-related genes, callose and phenol depositions, and hypersensitive response-like cell death. Interestingly, similar responses were observed following P. viticola inoculation in a tolerant grapevine hybri…
Theoretical Study of the Charge Transfer Exciton Binding Energy in Semiconductor Materials for Polymer:Fullerene-Based Bulk Heterojunction Solar Cells
2019
Recent efforts and progress in polymer solar cell research have boosted the photovoltaic efficiency of the technology. This efficiency depends not only on the device architecture but also on the material properties. Thus, insight into the design of novel semiconductor materials is vital for the advancement of the field. This paper looks from a theoretical viewpoint into two of the factors for the design of semiconductor materials with applications to bulk heterojunction solar cells: the charge transfer exciton binding energy and the nanoscale arrangement of donor and acceptor molecules in blend systems. Being aware that the exciton dissociation of local excitons in charge transfer states in…
Body mass index and factors associated with overweight and obesity: a crosssectional study of adult subjects living in a small city of Western Sicily…
2012
Background: although the epidemiological features of overweight and obesity have been well described, especially for very populous urban areas, less evidences are available for small urban areas. The aim of the present work was to assess BMI and factors associated with overweight and obesity in a representative sample of general population of a small city of Western Sicily (Italy). Methods: four hundred and eleven randomly selected adult subjects from general population living in a small Sicilian city with 7 144 inhabitants were interviewed by a standardized questionnaire investigating life-styles, eating habits, anthropometric measurements (weight, height and BMI) and socio-economic depriv…
Implication of an odorant-binding protein in precopulatory behaviour and interaction with the bacterial microbiota
2023
Chemoreception allows animals to detect nutritive food and avoid toxic compounds. Volatile and non-volatile chemical compounds, which are detected by olfactory and gustatory sensory organs, can trigger feeding and reproductive behaviours in animals such as Drosophila melanogaster. Inside chemosensory organs, perireceptor proteins like odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) serve to transport odorant and tastant molecule to dedicated receptors. OBPs are not only involved in chemoreception but also in several other functions. A recent study revealed an interaction between insect microbiota and OBP expression while another one showed that microbes can promote nutrient harvesting on food. In our proje…
Optimal maintenance system for offshore wind turbines
2010
In the last years, the industry of wind power generators has developed in many aspects. The offshore plants have some benefits over the onshore ones but their implementation is really expensive.Based in that cost, this paper describes the importance of applying an optimal maintenance based in priorities and cost. It also studies the maintenance types and proposes a scheme of maintenance for offshore plants.
Effect of a Passive Tuned Mass Damper on Offshore Installation of a Wind Turbine Nacelle
2021
Abstract Although the installation of offshore wind turbines takes place in calm seas, successful mating of wind turbine components can be challenging due to the relative motions between the two mating parts. This work investigates the effect of a passive tuned mass damper on the mating processes of a nacelle for a 10-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine. A nacelle with lifting wires and a monopile with a mass damper are respectively modelled using the multibody formulation in the HAWC2 program. A single mass damper is tuned to target at the first natural period of the monopile and is coupled to the main program using a dynamic link library. Afterwards, numerical simulations were carried out…
Baculovirus infection affects caterpillar chemoperception
2021
International audience; Baculoviruses are double-stranded DNA entomopathogenic viruses that infect predominantly insects of the order Lepidoptera. Research in the last decade has started to disentangle the mechanisms underlying the insect-virus interaction, particularly focusing on the effects of the baculovirus infection in the host's physiology. Among crucial physiological functions, olfaction has a key role in reproductive tasks, food source detection and enemy avoidance. In this work, we describe that Spodoptera exigua multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (SeMNPV) induces expression changes in some odorant receptors (ORs)-the centrepiece of insect's olfaction-when infecting larvae from its nat…
