Current European approaches in highway runoff management: A review

2022

Highway runoff is one of the most significant non-point sources of pollution for the terrestrial and aquatic environment with biological, physical, and chemical effects. Considering local characteristics, treatment practices, and determining factors are essential for highway runoff management. The aim of this paper is to survey the review of highway runoff management in Europe with emphasis on runoff characterization, treatment, and modeling approaches and identifying possible knowledge gaps exists based on our review. The results showed that highway runoff has spatiotemporal variation, which is the main factor in the regional selection of the best management practice (BMP). Also, recent st…

BMP7v induces cancer stem cells differentiation and enhances chemotherapy response in colorectal cancer

2014

Cancer stem cells (CSCs), characterized by high levels of ATP-binding cassette, anti-apoptotic molecules, active DNA-repair and slow replication capacities, surviving to conventional anti-cancer therapies, able to eradicate only the highly proliferating tumor cells, represent the elective target for new therapies. Colorectal CSCs (CR-CSCs) represent a powerful tool for preclinical validation of target therapies. In particular the elucidation of the mechanisms that govern stem cell survival and differentiation appears very essential for the identification of new molecular targets in cancer therapy. Among the molecules that govern these processes there are the Bone Morphogenetic Proteins (BMP…

Stormwater Source Control as a Strategy for Sustainable Development: State of the Practice and Perceived Trends

2005

The primary objective of the paper is to draw upon the experiences acquired in many parts of the world to provide an up-to-date summary of the state of the practice for source control techniques and approaches, in a sustainable development context. After a discussion of the prevailing context for urban drainage approaches, three main themes covering techniques and design criteria, institutional aspects and performance issues are discussed relative to source control implementation. The discussion is based on findings from the compilation and analysis of available literature, recently developed databases, the experience of the different members of the SOCOMA group and recent research on desig…
