Long-Term Effects of Dietary Sodium Intake on Cytokines and Neurohormonal Activation in Patients With Recently Compensated Congestive Heart Failure

2009

Abstract Background A growing body of evidence suggests that the fluid accumulation plays a key role in the pathophysiology of heart failure (HF) and that the inflammatory and neurohormonal activation contribute strongly to the progression of this disorder. Methods and Results The study evaluated the long-term effects of 2 different sodium diets on cytokines neurohormones, body hydration and clinical outcome in compensated HF outpatients (New York Heart Association Class II). A total of 173 patients (105 males, mean age 72.5±7) recently hospitalized for worsening advanced HF and discharged in normal hydration and in clinical compensation were randomized in 2 groups (double blind). In Group …

Analysis of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide in patients with acute coronary syndromes

2009

Background The N-terminal portion of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) has been identified as an indicator of prognosis in different cardiovascular diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the utility of measuring plasma NT-proBNP levels in patients with acute coronary syndromes. Methods and results We studied 66 patients admitted in our division for acute coronary syndromes. Patients underwent a venous blood sample within 24 h from the admission to determine NT-proBNP levels. Increasing plasma levels of NT-proBNP (in tertiles) was associated with a greater history of hypertension and current smoking, whereas biochemical parameters were associated with higher level of crea…

Factors associated with plasma antigen carbohydrate 125 and amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide concentrations in acute heart failure

2020

Background: Plasma amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and antigen carbohydrate 125 levels are positively associated with a higher risk of adverse clinical outcomes in acute heart failure. As a proxy of congestion, antigen carbohydrate 125 has also been proposed as a right-sided heart failure marker. Thus, we aimed to determine in this population the main factors – including echocardiographic right-sided heart failure parameters – associated with antigen carbohydrate 125 and amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide. Methods and results: We prospectively included 2949 patients admitted with acute heart failure. Amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide and antigen carbohy…

AGE8. Is the Serum N Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide the Best Candidate Biomarker for Long-term Prognosis in Patients with Prosthesis-patient Mismatch after Mitral Valve Replacement? C. R. Balistreri1, C. Pisano1, R. Franchino1, S.R. Vacirca1, F. Crapanzano1, O. F. Triolo1, C. Palmeri1, G. Ruvolo1 1University Of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: Natriuretic peptides (NPs) are released from the heart in response to pressure and volume overload. Among these, B-NP and Nterminal- proBNP (NT-proBNP) have become important diagnostic tools for the management of heart failure. However, B-NP and NT-proBNP levels reflect complications of systolic and diastolic function as well as alteration …

Left Atrial Remodeling and Brain Natriuretic Peptide Levels Variation after Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion

2021

Background: Few data are available about brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) variation and left atrial remodeling after the left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) technique. Methods: Prospective study included all consecutive patients successfully implanted with an LAAO device. Contrast-enhanced cardiac computed tomography (CT) was performed before and 6 weeks after the procedure with reverse left atrial remodeling defined by an increase in LA volume &gt

Cardiorenal Syndrome: New Pathways and Novel Biomarkers

2021

Cardiorenal syndrome (CRS) is a multi-organ disease characterized by the complex interaction between heart and kidney during acute or chronic injury. The pathogenesis of CRS involves metabolic, hemodynamic, neurohormonal, and inflammatory mechanisms, and atherosclerotic degeneration. In the process of better understanding the bi-directional pathophysiological aspects of CRS, the need to find precise and easy-to-use markers has also evolved. Based on the new pathophysiological standpoints and an overall vision of the CRS, the literature on renal, cardiac, metabolic, oxidative, and vascular circulating biomarkers was evaluated. Though the effectiveness of different extensively applied biomark…

Multi-Biomarker Profiling and Recurrent Hospitalizations in Heart Failure.

2016

Altres ajuts: Fundació La Marató de TV3 (no.201502-30), Sociedad Española de Cardiología, Societat Catalana de Cardiologia Despite advances in pharmacologic therapy and devices, patients with heart failure (HF) continue to have significant rehospitalization rates and risk prediction remains challenging. We sought to explore the value of a multi-biomarker panel [including NT-proBNP, high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-TnT), and ST2] on top of clinical assessment for long-term prediction of recurrent hospitalizations in HF. NT-proBNP, hs-TnT, and ST2 (suppression of tumorigenicity-2) levels were measured in 891 consecutive ambulatory HF patients. The independent association between the mu…

Predictive Value of Pro-BNP for Heart Failure Readmission after an Acute Coronary Syndrome

2021

Background: N-terminal pro-brain natural peptide (NT-pro-BNP) is a well-established biomarker of tissue congestion and has prognostic value in patients with heart failure (HF). Nonetheless, there is scarce evidence on its predictive capacity for HF re-admission after an acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We performed a prospective, single-center study in all patients discharged after an ACS. HF re-admission was analyzed by competing risk regression, taking all-cause mortality as a competing event. Results are presented as sub-hazard ratios (sHR). Recurrent hospitalizations were tested by negative binomial regression, and results are presented as incidence risk ratio (IRR). Results: Of the 2133 …
