Metabolic impact of Partial Volume Correction of [18F]FDG PET-CT oncological studies on the assessment of tumor response to treatment

2014

AIM: The aim of this work is to evaluate the metabolic impact of Partial Volume Correction (PVC) on the measurement of the Standard Uptake Value (SUV) from [18F]FDG PET-CT oncological studies for treatment monitoring purpose. METHODS: Twenty-nine breast cancer patients with bone lesions (42 lesions in total) underwent [18F]FDG PET-CT studies after surgical resection of breast cancer primitives, and before (PET-I) and after (PET-II) chemotherapy and hormone treatment. PVC of bone lesion uptake was performed on the two [18F]FDG PET-CT studies, using a method based on Recovery Coefficients (RC) and on an automatic measurement of lesion metabolic volume. Body-weight average SUV was calculated f…

Computer assisted diagnosis (CAD) in mammography. Comparison of diagnostic accuracy of a new algorithm (Cyclopus(R), Medicad) with two commercial sys…

2008

The study compares the diagnostic accuracy (correct identification of cancer) of a new computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) system (Cyclopus) with two other commercial systems (R2 and CADx). Cyclopus was tested on a set of 120 mammograms on which the two compared commercial systems had been previously tested. The set consisted of mammograms reported as negative, preceding 31 interval cancers reviewed as screening error or minimal sign, and of 89 verified negative controls randomly selected from the same screening database. Cyclopus sensitivity was 74.1% (R2=54.8%; CADx=41.9%) and was higher for interval cancers reviewed as screening error (90.9%; R2=54.5%; CADx=81.8%) compared with those revie…

Anthropological reflections on breastfeeding between care and culture

2017

Breastfeeding is a practice so far unobtrusively studied by cultural and medical anthropology, an act placed between nature and culture, between private and social women spheres and which, like birth and pregnancy. It expresses hierarchies in roles and gender relations among biopolitical dynamics which denote the organization of society itself. As a cultural practice, breastfeeding differs itself on the basis of the social and ethnic belonging of the mother and the child, leading to ritual differences such as the law of the “kinship of milk” in muslim societies or the apothecary taboo of Sub-Saharan Africa. The paper reflects on how much this is occurring in Western society where breastfeed…

Inflammatory Response to a High Radiation Dose in Breast Cancer

2014

Background: Radiation therapy (RT) is an essential treatment modality used for breast cancer (BC) care. Radiations can stimulate the immune system via the early activation of cytokine cascades, which can greatly affect cellular radio-sensitivity. Our aim is to analyze inflammatory response induced by high ionizing radiation (IR) doses, generated by intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) treatment, to identify several potential targets that may influence cell radio-response. Methods: MCF10, MCF7 and MDA-MB231 BC cell lines have been exposed to high IR (23 Gray and 9 Gray), delivered by IORT treatments. Conditioned media (CM) were assayed at the time points: 0’, 30’, 1, 3, 6, 24, 48, and 72 hours…

Quality of life, alexithymia, and defence mechanisms in patients affected by breast cancer across different stages of illness

2016

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of alexithymia and defence mechanisms on the quality of life of patients affected by breast cancer at different stages of the disease. Methods A convenience sample of 110 patients with breast cancer was involved in the study: 41 were receiving adjuvant chemotherapyafter surgery, 29 had disease-free survival in follow-up and 40 were receiving chemotherapy for metastatic disease. Quality of life, alexithymia and defence mechanisms were assessed using the following instruments: EORTC QLQ-C30-BR23, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and Defense Mechanism Inventory (DMI). Results Compared to the other groups, patients receiving chemoth…

EFFECTS OF CELLULAR SHORT-TERM STARVATION ON CONVENTIONAL CHEMOTHERAPY RESPONSE IN HUMAN CANCER: UNDERSTANDING OF MOLECULAR MECHANISMS AND MICRORNAS …

Background: Short Term Starvation (STS) is a type of dietary restriction able to reduce tumorigenesis and cancer progression but molecular bases of this effect are still unclear. Aim: In vitro analysis of STS effects in presence of chemotherapy and evaluation of microRNAs (miRNAs) involvement. Results: STS affects the expression profiles of miRNAs involved in chemotherapy response leading to cancer cells sensitization and to healthy cells protection.
