Use of gabapentin to reduce chronic neuropathic pain in Fabry disease.

The effect of the anticonvulsant gabapentin on neuropathic pain was studied in six male patients with Fabry disease, aged 15-45 years. After 4 weeks of treatment, pain, as measured using the Brief Pain Inventory, was decreased compared with baseline. Treatment was generally well tolerated. This study indicates that gabapentin should be considered as a treatment option for the neuropathic pain of Fabry disease.
Computerized brain tomography measures compared with spontaneous and suppressed plasma cortisol levels in major depression.

We determined brain density and ventricular measurements with computerized tomography (CT) in 33 depressed patients and compared the results with basal plasma cortisol and its suppressibility by dexamethasone. Mean plasma cortisol was positively related to elevated ventricular brain ratio (VBR). No association could be found between dexamethasone suppression test (DST) status and VBR or any other CT parameter. In the past 20 years, management of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) has incorporated new treatment approaches, but survival benefits have not been confirmed in controlled studies. This retrospective study includes 176 consecutive patients younger than age 60 years in whom PMF was diagnosed during a 30-year period (1976-2005). Median age at diagnosis was 50 years (range, 18-59 years), and 98 patients (55%) were men. At the time of this report, 99 patients (56%) had died; the 77 surviving patients were followed up for a median of 8 years (range, 4-24 years). Osteonecrosis of the jaw is an uncommon but potentially serious complication of bisphosphonate therapy in multiple myeloma. Previous studies showed that the presence of one or two minor alleles of the cytochrome P450, subfamily 2C polypeptide 8 gene (CYP2C8) polymorphism rs1934951 was an independent prognostic marker associated with development of osteonecrosis of the jaw in multiple myeloma patients treated with bisphosphonates. Light exposure patterns in schizophrenia

Spontaneous light exposure patterns were studied in 10 chronic schizophrenic patients. Half of our schizophrenic patients exposed themselves to bright light exceeding ordinary indoor illumination. There was a significant positive correlation between the percentage of exposure to bright light and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale subscore anergia and a significant negative correlation with depression.
